TUESDAY BVKNINO, JAN. 11, 1881.
Sleighing en the Susquehanna.
Ker the Intelligence!!.
Of late years it is a very uncommon
thing for the Susquehanna te be frozen se
that it can be driven across at Peach Bot Bot Bet
eom. It is in that condition new and the
passengers are quite numerous, and the
novelty of the ride adds another charm te
the charms of uleihin. Last Sunday your
correspondent, iti company with Messrs.
I. C. Arneld and David "Wcidley, drove te
the river at Peach Bettem, found a canoe
doing tell-gate duty at the ferry landing,
which swung en its imaginary hinsres
upon the application of a Silver key, and
settled back te step the next who came.
as we slid through and out of the frozen
stream, that recognizes no fetter but the
ones of old Jack Frest. As he glides ever
the ice with his heise stepping te the tune
that the sleigh bells ring, and sees the pic
turesque rocks and islands covered with
ice and snow, witli the trees standing en
the islands looking like giants stuck
in a drift, and the bushes that
seem like mortals laden with care,
bending down with their weight of snow,
which they could easily shake off if they
would only " make an effort," as Mre.
Dombey's sister-in law would have put it ;
as he sees all this, with the hills en the
shore looking out ever the frozen fieldj
like old men with snow-covered heads,
their great white beards frozen into icicles
and hanging down from great caverns of
mouths, round which no smiles play, for
their smiles settled into hard lines when
the voice of their darling river was wen
from them by the wiles of the cunning
frost. In grim silence they leek down
upon the beautiful frost work, as the
sleighs go jingling by, with the most ut -sympathizing
air, and gather frowns
around their brews at the nonsense, as we
have seen frowns form upon the brews
of stern parents, as they have seen their
daughters waltz away with young
men at picnics. As I said, when he sees
aud imagines all this (we would
have seen and imagined a great
deal mere, no doubt, if a driving
snow had net been striking us in the faces
and somewhat dampened our poetic ardor)
one almost forgets that he is gliding above
rocks and rapids, clear of which the beats
always try te teer, and only remembers
that he might break through when he sees
only a few feet before his track a pile of
tree branches as a warning that a horse
aud sleigh did go in there only two days
before. We are often plunged into great
dangers by trying te see hew near we can
go te them safely,
And as one leeks miles and n.iles up the
river of ice and sees the great distauces be
tween the .shores, and turns te leek miles
and miles dawn the river of ice, where he
sees it
trailed bv the hills et Maryland
he naturally thinks, if he is as practical a
chap as your scribbler, " What a wonder
ful waste of land. Here are almost num
berless acres of Lancaster county land
upon which millions of pounds of "thirty
cents all-round '" tob;ic.:e might be grown,
laying idle, or if net exactly idle, only use
ful te carry oil a great, monstrous, way
ward, useless liver of water te the ocean,
that has plenty without it, and doesn't
thank us for our unruly representative."
Of course srch utilitarianisms de net oc
cupy our minds for any length of time I
with new and beautiful scenes continually j
presenting themselves as we fellow the j
tortuous track, that, after a two miles
diive, brings us te the Yuk comity shore j
tbe petal of tlie white sister of our "red
rose." Hkimeuk

Brandy as a Medicine
The following article was voluntarily sent te

BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant
was never intended as c beverage, but te be
