A tiamn caused a great deal of trouble
and excitement en Friday afternoon en
Walnut hticct. He made several calls in
the neighborhood, Mrs. Geerge Fager le
ceivin; no less than four. He seemed
dctci mined te stay and succeeded in
thoieuhly frightening the women. Con
stable Hollingsworth. was finally sent for,
and Mr. Tramp was very summarily dis dis
eoned of.
The new market hour, 7 o'clock, seems
te suit every one except one or two butcli
cis, who for wine years past have been ac
customed te taking their meat te the mai
kct house at two and thiee o'clock in the
morning and cutting it up by gaslight
burned at the expense of the borough. By
the new ordinance the maiket is net
opened until 7 o'clock a. m., and butcheis I
are new compelled te cut up their meat by
their own gas or lamp light. We under
stand scvcial of these butchers thi eaten
net te attend maiket. Very well, let them
stay at home ; there aie ciieugn who will
come te supply all the meat the citizens of
Columbia Mill require.

All the meetings h.ive been well attended.
The late thaw and subsequent freeze
had the effect of making splendid sleigh

geed, some being clear of ice and snow,
etheis aie coveted with a solid mass of
shppciy ice.
An old lady named Flick, residing en
Seuth 1th stitct, beyond Yeuug's brewery,
slipped en the ice in the side yard at her
house yclviday and falling down disle
cated her n i ist Dr. iliukle attended her .
A coasting p.uty is talked of for this
evening. Should the party go out they
will unquestionably have a veiy pleasant
time, as the several hills near town are in
piimc coasting condition.
Wc legict te lcain that Mr. L. K. Fon Fen
dersinith, the gentlemanly teller at the
banking house of E. K. Smith & Ce., is
confined te his loom te-day. We trust his
indisposition may be of sheit duration.
The Sjy current issue says a decline in
butter and eggs is suic te occur. Well,
that is a prediction that Columbians will
bcveiy glad te have veiitied. We are all
sick of paying 30 and &" cents for buttci

A FATHER'S CRIME.
Brether and Sister Made llusband und Wife.
History of the Oecoptten Prnctlxed by :i
Maryland Fanner en His Unupect-
Ing Children.
Themas Bewcn, a wealthy lcsident of
Calvert county, Md., has made application
te Gov. Hamilton for a pardeu from the
State Heuse of Coricctien, where he is
serving a term of feui ycais for a most
astounding crime, the details of which arc
new given publicity for the first time.
Bewen was convicted en the 12th of Xo Xe
vember last for having brought about a
mariiage between his daughter Ella and a
young man, generally supposed te be a
distant connection, but who has since
proven te be a son of the accused.
The marriage between the brother and
sister was celebrated by Rev. Jeseph P.
Wilsen, of the Methodist chuich, at Prince
Frederick, Calvert county, where the par
ties resided, en September 18, 1879, when
Mr. Bewcn gave the bride away and ac
corded the young couple his parental
blessing. The groom, who went by the
name of Enech Walters, had been adopted
by Mr. Bewen and was very popular in the
village. Miss Bewcn was only 17 years of
age, very attractive in appearance, and
of a relincd and gentle disposition. Shet t
ly after the marriage it became rumtr.d
that a former suitor for Miss Bewen's
hand had made a startling discovery in
connection with the nuptials. Later en
the little community was astounded by
the arrest of Bewen en the charge above
stated. At the trial it was proven that
Walters's real name was Enech Bewcn, and
that he was the son of Themas Bewcn by
a former wife.
It appears that the elder Bewcn, about
twenty-five years age, seduced a girl in the
neighborhood and subscqucct'y married
her just before her baby was born. The
mother died and Bewen adopted the
infant as a child of an old friend. The
boy baby was named Walters and glow up
in the family where he was of course incon
stant contact with Miss Bewcn, resulting
in a warm affection springing up between
them. When Walters Grst proposed the
marriage Bewen objected, but subse
quently changed his mind and assisted at
the nuptials of the brother and sister. As
stated, the elder Bewcu wa tried, coo ceo coe
tictod and sentenced iu tbe Calvert county
circuit ceuit last Xevember, but the case
escaped public notice at that time.
The unfertuuate brother and sister at
once separated when their true relation
was made known te them, and have taken
steps te have the marriage formally de
clared void. Beth arc terribly pi est rated
by the shocking disceveiy. Be wen's ap
plication for pardeu, ba&ed en a plea of ill
health, has aroused a storm of iudignatien
iu Calvert county, and it is nut probable
that it will be granted. lie owns a large
i.trm near I'nnce t miertck. and was a
class leader
in the Methodist church at
that place.
