The tieasurcr sent wexd back that he was acting under ad vice of counsel and would net meet the committee until he had consulted coun ceun hel. Seme time afterwards the city tiea--urer, accompanied by his counsel, ex Mayer Atlee and J. Hay Hrewn, c.-q., called at the tieasurcr's office, and Mr. Atlee asked what "these people" weie doing there. lie was informed that the liuauce committee had taken posses sion under authority of a lesolutieu parsed by city councils. The solicitor answered that it was done by the authority of the li uauce committee. Mr. Atlee asked the city solicitor te pioduce the law under which the finance i-uminittee assumed such aiitlieiity. After Mcsms. Atlee and 15ieui had left the office, the city solicitor dcm.iuded the keys, books, papeis, &c.. from the treas urer. The treasurer refused te give them up. The happiest looking man in the paity was Select Councilman I?or I?er iug, of the Ninth ward. Alieut 11 o'clock Messrs. Execution of llayes and Sullivan in Phil. udclphla and of Mrs. "uclerheflVr and Fran is Lammens at Newark. The Philadelphia Hanging. Puiladelpulv, Jan. C Sullivan and Hayes were banged in the county prison at 10:37 this morning. Beth men passed a calm, though almost sleepless night. The priests arrived at th prison early, and religious exercises were kept up until the time for their execution. At 10:35 a. m. Sullivan was brought down from his cell en the upper tier te the deer of Hayes's cell ea the ground fleer, and immediately after the precession formed and proceeded te the gallows near the end of the same corridor. Beth men walked firmly, Hayes being accompanied by Rev. Fatflers Daily and Masterson ; Sullivan followed, accompanied by llev. Father Xeal. Ou the scaffold both men knelt and prayed, the priests kneeling between them, and when they arose Hayes laid aside the beads upon which he had been telling his prayers, aud attempted te ad dress these present, speaking in a wild aud incoherent manner. Twe of the priests reasoned with him, persuading him net te speak, but he continued in spite of re monstrance te talk in a rambling manner. He seemed anxious te narrate, the history of his married life, but at last yielded, as he himself said, te the request of his pas ter, at the same time protesting that he was net afraid of the gallows. Meanwhile Sullivan steed calmly kbs ing his crucifix aud listening te the exhor tations of the third priest. Finally Hayes expressed his hope for forgiveness, forgiving all himself. The priests retired te the top step of the gal lows, where they knelt, the nooses were" adjusted, and at 10:37, while the priests were reciting the lie Prefundi, the drop fell. Beth bodies received a fall of four feet. llayes appeared te die without a strug gle, and in 2 minutes the beating of his pulse could net be felt, although his heart beat for sixteen minutes. Sullivan .strug gled violently, and it was seventeen min utes before the physicians pronounced him dead. After hanging 27 minutes the bodies were cut down, when it was ascertained that both had died of strangulation. AT XRWAKK. The social condition of Ii eland has DSatimcd an alarming character, and agrarian crimes have been greatly multiplied. The administration of justice has been fuistratcd and terrorism has been established in parts of Ireland. THK1KMB1P CAME iX. Heavily Lacla Wlta WelceaM Vargs. On a truck patch at Sixteenth and Dick Dick ineon streets, Philadelphia, lives a family named Glen. They are in rather peer cir cumstances. The husband works the truck farm aud sustains a family consisting of a wife and four children. Recently the wife was notified that her father bad died in Melbourne, Australia, leaving $1,500,000 te her. The story told by the Glen family is this : Somewhere about thirty years ace James Beyle, his wife and two children were liv iug upon a farm in LaghtnagalUxb, coun ty Denegal, Ireland. Years of hard toil and struggling with the impoverished soil had failed te place the farmer in a comfortable position, and fin ally, when his lease expired he determined te seek bis fortune elsewhere. A home was found for the children the girl Mary, who was then a babe, being placed with her grandparents and Beyle and his wife took passage for Victeria, Australia. Ou arriving at the colony he obtained em ployment, and by care and industry saved enough in a few years te buy a farm. Pros perity centiuued te attend nim,and eventu ally lie became one of the most extensive farmers iu the district. Meanwhile the baby daughter whom he had left behind was growing te years of womanhood, r rem time te time tee mail brought words of geed cheer from her pa rents, but the welcome missives ceased af ter 1S70, the last one stating that her mother and a sister, who was born in the colony, had died, aud that her father bad given up farming and was investing heavily in geld mines near Ballarat. In 1871 Miss Marv married Glen, and imme diately afterward the couple embarked for this country. They are new living with their children en a truck farm, in a three-story brick house at Sixteenth and Dickinsen streets. Fer nine long years Mrs. Glen bad mourned her father as dead. Often, almost hoping against hope, she wrote te her far distant home, but none of the letters elic ited a response. A few months age, how ever, a letter with the Irish postmark reached the house. This proved te be from an uncle, and contained the information that her father had died leaving an estate of 885,000, nearly $1,500,000 ; that Her only brother bad also died iu 1874, and that therefore she (Mrs. Glen) was the sole surviving legatee te her father's wealth. This information seemed almost incredible te the Glens, who could net realize the possibility of being raised from their present humble position te one of luxury and affluence. Let ters were sent te the Australian lawyers, the geed news was confirmed, and within the last wcekMr.GIen has received a letter from solicitors in Melbourne ask ing for a certificate of birth. This must' be obtained from Ireland, and the whole charge of the matter has been placed in the hands of Lawyer Jehn Austin Purcell, who will take the necessary steps by which the family can come into possession of the enormous fortune.
