Farmer's Friend. About twelve years age I became ac quainted with a new seedling apple which premised te be an acquisition te the apple family. As I was then engaged exten sively in the grafting business, I began te propagate the variety as rapidly as possi ble ; and new, after twelve years' experi ence, I can truly say it has proved au ac ac "qaisitien. I named it the " Yeke Apple," by which name it is known in these parts. The history of the apple is as fellows : About the year 1860 and 18G2 a young seedling apple trce en the farm of Benja min Yeke, of Paradise, Jeffersen county, Pa., was grafted in the top prier te its having borne any fruit ; and some of the natural branches, through neglect or otherwise, were permitted te remain till they bore fruit, which proved much supe rior te the grafts en the same tree ; and emission or neglect saved te the world the " Yeke Apple," It is in season from the first of September te the middle of Octo ber. It is a large, round sub-acid apple, and in color is very much similar te the Fall rarabe. I have had forty years experience iu the grafting business ; have become acquainted with and' grafted almost all the varieties that have been brought te the country from far and near, from mere than adezen nurseries for the last twenty-five years, and will say that iu my opinion the " Yeke Apple," for drying purposes, stands at the head; and is also very geed when fully ripe for eating, aud all culinary purposes ; though its best use is for drying. About the 8th of October last I bought a bushel, which I gathered from trees which I had grafted about six or seven years before, and thirty-two apples was all that would lay in and en each half bushel. A portion of these I took te the Punxsutawney fair, wherc'they were as much or mera admired than any ether apple among a very large collection of varieties there exhibited. It is without exception eue of the best and most regu lar bearers that I ever knew among apples. The apple should generally be cut in eight pieces te dry, and when dry, is of a rich, whitish-yellow color. This apple has but one drawback or fault. When the grafts are young and growing very thrifty, or when the tree stands in damp or very rich ground, they are somewhat disposed te ret, but when grown en high, dry channery ground, suitable for the growth of the apple, it is without spot or blemish. It is a geed grower, and is des tined te beceme extensively cultivated. But I must speak somewhat of another apple, and that is the " Gravcnstine." This apple came into bearing for the first time in this community about four te six years age, and new it is regarded by all who have it as the most perfect apple they ever saw. As a all apple it seems te be without fault About eight years age I was told by an agent from Hechester, Mew Yerk, that there was net a better apple known among nurserymen than the "Gra veastine," and our short experience in this community fully proves it true. I feel like saying a word for the "North ern Spy." Were I te giva my opinion, after forty years in grafting apples, and having set in that time near or quite 200.- 000 grafts, of the three above named ap ple I would say : The Yeke apple" for the purpose of drying is the most valuable apple ever grafted. The " Gravenstine" u the most perfected apple in all respects I ever grafted; and the ".Northern Spy" is the matt valuable apple te- crew for use e g-aad.market that I have ever grafted ; and 7 &?4T Jthy should all be grown en high, or dry Dry gmuuu.
