Siew Year's Day.
Except the closing of the banks and a
general dullness in trade and the observ
ance of the Feast of Circumcision at St
Mary's Catholic church, there is nothing
te indicate that te-day is a holiday. The
saloons have extra lunches and there is a
geed deal of private social feasting, but
less New Year calling than is general in
Lancaster society, the custom gradually
coming into disuse in the larger cities.

cust street, above Third. They welcomed
in the New Year.
There are quite a number of new and
very pretty designs in New Year's cards in
circulation this year. Te-day the young
ladies of the world will remain within
doers awaiting calls from their gentlemen
friends. Who will envy them the unen
viable irksomeness ei a day se spent ? Net
any for us, thank you.

correspondent this morning that the ther
mometer at his place showed the mer
cury te beat twelve degrees below zero at
between 8 aud 9 o'clock At four o'clock
this morning at the same place it regis
tered only ten degrees. It will be seen
from this that the rising e:' the sun had no
effect en the temperature. At 7:35 o'clock
at the Western Union telegraph office it
was also at twelve degrees below. At this
writing (12:45) at Black's hotel, twelve de
grees above zero is the ligure pointed at.
A sleighing party of about eight young
men left here this morning for Yerk.
The ball last evening in Ce. II. armory
for the benefit of the Shawnee lire com
pany, was net a success.
This is New Year's day and the bauks
and stores are closed. The posteffice is
open at only the usual holiday hours.
There was some life in the afternoon
market of yesterday and it was a success.
Mr. Jehn Mann, residing in Maner
township, gave a supper te a number of
Columbians en Thursday evening.
Last evening's ball in Odd Fellows hall,
for the benefit of the Columbia fire com
pany, opened auspiciously and closed in
the same way. Sixty-five couples took
part in the grand march steppiug te the
music of Wolfe's orchestra. Refreshments
consisting of sandwiches and coffee, were
served as the old year gave place te the
new, and in the first hour of 1881 the
spirits of these present were raised te the
highest pitch of joy and excitement. The
ball room was very handsomely decorated
and the venture was a complete success.

Cases Dismissed.
This morning Samuel Sweigcrt had a
hearing before Alderman Barren a charge
of cruelty te animals, which was preferred
by Hugh M. Shaeffer. The parties live
at Millport, some distance from Lititz.
Seme time age Sweigertshet a deg belong
ing te the prosecutor. The defense called
a number of witnesses te prove the char
acter of the animal. Frem their evidence
it appeared that the deg wasef no particu
lar breed but was a " cur." He was a
very bad canine aud would often go out en
foraging expeditions te the houses of the
neighbors. He was very fend of sucking
eggs, and was once cveu seen enjoying a
large fat chicken which he bad killed.
After the deg's character had been proven
the case was dismissed.
Before Alderman McConemy, yesterday,
a number of cases were heard. They grew
out of a fight which occurred en Seuth
Queen street en Christmas day, and they
were all dismissed as the evidence showed
that it was a badly mixed affair.
A Deem for Wlckerstaam.
The twenty-sixth annual session of the
Yerk county teachers institute closed last

closing the institute passed a reso

protesting agaiust a bill te be introduced

abolishing the office of county superinten
dcut of public schools. They also ex
pressed their unanimous approval of the
work performed by State Superintendent
Wickersham, and declared themselves in

Watch Meetings.
At the Union Bethel, St. Paul's Metho
dist, Duke street Methodist and African
watch meetings were held last night, all
of which were largely attended, the serv
ices continuing from .half-past nine till
midnight, at which hour the New Year
was welcomed in with thanksgiving, hand
shaking and mutual congratulations. At
the A. M. E. church there was quite a dis
turbance caused by some colored roughs,
particulars of which are given elsewhere.
Sleighing.
The sleighing is excellent and the sleighs
run lightly; but "we "wish te remark"
that nine full-grown men crowded into a
one-horse sleigh is a little tee much of the
geed thing. But such a party was en the
street te-day, and get along very well as
long as they moved down hill.
The Cress.
At St. Jehn's Lutheran church the theme
of the sermon te-morrow evening will be I
" Tug attractive power or the cress."
- Case FreMBtmbea.
At 2p. m. te-day the employee of the

their behalf. Alderman Patrick Dennelly
presented their esteemed -and popu
lar superintendent, Mr. Philip Bernard,
with a handsome geld-headed cane
suitably inscribed Iu making the
presentation. 'Squire Dennelly said it
was prompted by a regard for Mr. Bernard
as a gentleman and employer, in both of
which relations be wen and kept the high
est respect of all associated with him. He
knew the feelings prompting the gift
would be highly appreciated by the re
cipient who se well knew and faithfully
recognized the true reciprocal relations of
labor and capital.
Mr. Bernard, much moved by the unex
pected testimonial, expressed his thanks
in a neat speech, and invited all hands te
"meet " him after working hours.
Beautiful Wax Werk.
We have been shown a specimen of wax
work made te order by Miss Martha Rudy,
of this city, and which has been the result
of long and artistic labor, that is a rare
product in its way of taste and skill. It is
a cress of flowers risiug from a circular
mass of bloom and introducing the widest
range of floral selections. They are wrought
one most faithfully te the natural originals
and the whole work satisfies the most
critical examination. The entire design
is striking, but chief merit liesjfcm the
careful elaboration of each flower. The
roses, carnations, fuchsias, ferget-me-nets
and every'otherefthemultitudiuous variety
are executed with marvelous delicacy,
every bud and leaf being 'se natural that
te detect that they are artificial requires
close examination, and some of them, se
te speak, are "mere perfect than natural
flowers.
