All through the holiday season :iiul par
ticulary during last week, theic has been
an almost unprecedented rush of shoppers
at the retail stores of Bosten, and the
large dry goods establishments especially
have been thronged. With the hundreds
of ladies who have preplexcd dry goods
clerks with the customary shopping ques
tions there has been a moderate sprinkling
of shoplifters. Several of thorn have been
detected and punished in the courts, but
in one instance at least the officials made
a serious blunder.
One day during the height of the busy sca-
buu tun who ei a wcaiuiy uusniucss man
who lives at the Highlands, entered one of
the principal dry goods stores te make
her Christmas purchases. The store was
thronged, and the clerks hurried with the
demands of impatient customers. The
lady, in her tour of the establishment,
paused for several minutes before a
counter where some expensive laces were
displayed. She spent sonie minutes in
examining the delicate goods, but made
no purchase, and moved away te another
part of the store. Before she had taken
many steps through the throng, however,
an officer in the employ of
the firm confronted her, and in
formed her that he nutat take her
into custody en the charge of shoplifting,
at the same time lifting up a picce of valu
able lace which hung suspended from a
button of her outer garment. In vain she
protested her innocence and affirmed her
ignorance of the presence of the bit of
lace. She was taken into a private room
and searched, and then conducted te a
mere secure place. Nothing of a suspi
cions cliaractcr was found upon her per
son. The lady was expensively dressed,
and had a considerable sum of money in
her parse. . She g.ive her name and ad
dress freely, hoping thereby te establish
claim te responsibility, hut te no avail.

Tbe presence of the lace upon the lady's
garment was easily explained when an ex
amination of the buttons was made.
They were of a peculiar leugh pattern,and
in handling ovcr.the pile of laces spread
eat by the salesman for her inspection,
one piece, according te the theory, was
brushed against a button as 6he leaned
against the counter and clung te it.
When pointed out te her by the officers it
was hanging conspicuously, with no at
tempt at concealment. It was said that
the lady's husband, in his anger at what
he considered the insult offered te his wife,
instructed his attorney te institute suit
against the firm. The affair was quickly
hashed up, however, and all parties te the
case suddenly became extremely re ticent.
The facts as above narrated came te the
correspondent of the Sun through a trust
worthy channel, and the lady's husband
was called upon. In reply te questions
he said that he wished te make no state
ment for publication, as the case had been
amicably settled.
"I never knew hew many fiiends my
wife and I had," he continued "until
this affair happened, for although it has
net as yet get into the nevspapers, some
how or ether the news has spread among
ear acquaintances, and my wife has had
many expressions of sympathy." In re
ply te a question as te whether he had
placed a deposit of $70,000 at the disposal
of a lawyer with which te fight the firm,
he smiled thoughtfully aud replied : "Well
I did pat the case into the hands of my
attorney, and I fancy that if I had seen fit
te proceed with it there would have been
no lack of money ; but I have said that I
would give no information, and I cannot."
Here the interview closed.
The prominence of the uartics, both so
cially and financially, has caused it te be a
leading topic of discussion in the circles
where the facts have been known
The most startling story of holiday
shoplifting is told as hiving occurred at
another large dry goods hcusc. Tiie wife
of a leading jeweler was pointed out by a
cash boy at the establishment in question
as having been seen by him te take goods
from a counter. Her denials of the accu
sation had no effect, and upon being
searched two or thrce handkerchiefs were
found in a pocket of her sacquc. She de
nied all knowledge of hew they came
there, but her tery was net credited.
Like the ether lady, she scut for her
husband, who promptly demanded of the
firm the proofs, if they possessed
them, of his wife's guilt. The cash
boy was brought in, and when closely
questioned begau te snivel, and
finally confessed that he himself put the
handkerchiefs in the lady's pocket in the
hope of thereby obtaining the reward of
fered by the firm for any case of theft de
tected by en employee. Of course the lady
was promptly set at liberty with profuse
apologies. Her husband's indignation
rose higher at the knowledge of his wife's
Barrow escape and he threatened a suit.
The case was settled, however and as
with the ether case, the affair, was hushed
np for obvious reasons. The police, when
questioned concerning tbe latter case this
evening, professed ignorance of its details,
and one officer gave it as his opinion that
it grew eat of the first case. The state
