TruA. dzMwd&w Something About Story, Twain, Ward and Nasby. Printers' Circular. "I'm a Bohemian, ami liave been around and had lets of fnn in my day." The speaker was the centre of an admir ing group in a resort where be alternately quailed his beer and looked patronizingly at this companions, who fcquently ap plauded his statements. "Yes, sir; my name is Charles Applcten Stevenson, and I've been through the whole business. I guess I won't travel much mere ; I am a guest of General Ilincks new. I'm get ting along past sixty. I've seen lets of the boys get up. Away back in 1839 or' 40 , after the Canadian rebellion, I worked en Thurlow Weed's paper, the New Yerk Commercial, at tbe same frame with Wilbur F. Story, new of the Chicago Timet. Story was a handsome, dashing fellow, and a geed printer. He get the Western fever in 1840, aud struck Jacksen, Michigan, where he published the Patriot, with Rufus B. Chceny. At the end of about three years Story bought the Detroit Free Press from the Bagg family. Jehn L. Harmen put some money into the concern, but I think Story bought him out in about eighteen months. They wcre both teny chaps. Story used te get his beets from New Yerk and his clothes from Bosten. I think Story married his first wife there, her name was Isham, daughter of the su perintendent of public instruction of Mich -ignn. She wrote the book notices for the Fiec Press. New lives in Virginia ; they Kcp:i rated by mutual agreement. Story went te Chicago after selling the Free Press te a politician named Walker for twenty thousand dollars. The limes had been started, if I remember aright, with the money of Stephen iv. uengias. the united states senator, and Cook. United States marshal. About 1852 C. II. McCerraick, "the reaper man,' wanted t go te Congress te get his patent renewed. He brought up the paper of the Times and secured a controlling interest. McCerniick didn't get te Congress, and about I860 he efiered the sheet at private sale, declaring that he had lest several thousand dollars en it. Here Story ap peared and bought the Times for $12,000, investing the ether $3,000, which he had realized ftem the sale of the Free Press, in a IIoe press. Story" edited the paper himself. " Burnside placed a chain-gang around the TYwcs office te step the publication of the paper, which was printing treasonable articles. Jack Woedlock, the pressman and he's thcic te this day took a hose and swore he would scald anybody who interfered. They run oft" twenty-live papers, and Story took them under his arm and climbed out upon the reef, aud get down into tlia street, saying that he never lest an edition, lie went down te the telegraph oflice and sent a dispatch te Lincoln, aud Abu sent back this : " 'Order of General Burnside counter manded. I have enough en my hands without chaining the press.' "Story run his paper the next night; but Story lest money en the Times. About 18C4 the thing ba -an te pay. The concern has been going by fits and starts ever since. "There's General Hincks ; he's a prac tical printer, tee ; as geed a ene as I am. Yes, sir ; lie used te work at the case in the office of t!ua7W. He was afterwards shipping clerk in the hardware store that had the contract for furnibhing iron for the United States navy. He married into the same family with Geiier.il Butler. He get up in a hurry. " I set acquainted with Sam Clemmcns. or Mark Twain, as he is best known, as a brother type in Sandusky, Ohie, in 1832. Hew old is Sam? 'Well, he's about thirty-eight new. As I was say ing, he w.is en the Plaindeakr. lie came ifp te Detroit en a beat. The next I heard of him he was playing the Bo hemian out in 'Frisce, where he nearly starved aud went te Nevada. There for au hour, Sam was worth $1,000,000 or mere. He struck what is known as the Comstock lode, Virginia City. A friend of his'n, who crossed the plains with him, was sick, and Sam failed te report, and the claim was jumped. But he made n. little stake there and went te the Sand wich Islands. He caine back by way of Cuba, and struck New Yerk city. He met his wife there. She had a fortune. He wrote an autobiography which made him popular, and then he published his "Roughing It." Since that time, I take it, you fellows knew something of him. " Did I knew Artemus Ward or Charles F. Browne? I don't knew my own son better. Brown was reporting en the Cleveland Plaindcaler. He was a practical printer. I struck him en the Teledo Blade and Detroit Free Adcsrtiser. He was a native of Portland, Me., went te Cam bridge, Mass., and worked a book-print ing usuiuiisiinieiit. ana tucu went te Jios Jies Jios ten, where he get fie Western fever. " Petroleum V. Nasby? I wish I knew myself as I de him. I have known him since he was a boy twenty-two years of ate. We didn't usj te associate with David R Lecke that'.', his real name, you knew. Lecke was a tvpc-snatclicr te be gin with, but ha took the place ei Chas. F. Browne, who get ou a drunk, as city editor of the Tclode Biadi. Lecke up went as fast as the 'Cross-Reads Man,' and new owns the sheet." Newspaper AdrerttslBc.
