LANeASEUDAILY ttteftf& hv 1 COLUMBIA. NEWS. OUR BEGULAK COKKES DKNCK It is quite in order tbis morning te say something about the weather, -which is by atany degrees the coldest wc have had for several years. At daybreak this morning the thermometers about town all register ed 10 or mere degrees below zero. At Ihe P. It. B. machine shops, up by the basin, the mercury steed at 14 degrees belowjcere ; at the opera house 12 below, and atseveral private residences 12, 11 and 10 degrees below were registered. The upward motion, despite a very bright sun, has been very, very slew. At 9 o'clock 10 degrees below r.as a fair register; at 10 o'clock 8 degrees below, and at 12:30 p m. the register was 2 degrees above and a Etiff breeze springing up. Quite a large audience assembled in the Bethel church, corner af Walnut and 7th street last evening, the occassien being the Christmas celebration of the Sunday school of the church. The exercises con sisted of singing by the school, addresses and presentation of gifts. The addresses were made Mr. Simen C. May, superinten dent of the school, Mr. Gr.iybill and the pastor, Rev. Mr. Esteriinc. Theie weic two very pretty Christmas trees, which were elaborately ti immed and presented a very attractive appearance. Inside this pretty little church everybody was warm and happy ; outside the cold north wind sending the mercury shivering away down te zero. The Frederick (Md.) Times, in a recent issue says : ' Captain A. E. Frccburn and wife, who have been residing in this city for several years past, and who have wtm hosts of friends here, took their de parture for their new home at Liltles Liltles tewn, Pa., en Thursday morning. The captain will take charge as proprietor of the National hotel of that place en the 1st prex, and will, he says, make it pleasant for his friends who may chance that way." Capt. Freeburu was formerly a conductor en the Frederick division P. H. 11., and is. well known and highly esteemed among a host of friends in Columbia, who will ah join in wishing him success in his new oc cupation. six or eight. Columbia ladies and gentle men have made arrangements te s&igh te Lancaster this evening for the purpose of attending the " assembly." "We doubt very much whether they will carry out their intentions se far as the sleighing part, should the lutnpciaturc continue down at the zero point or lower. Just im agine driving from Columbia te Lancaster in an open sleigh at 4 or 5 'clock in the morning with the mercury at 10 degrees below zeie ! Mr. Jes. F. McM;il;inT who was stationed here for several years as the chief engineer of the Hanover Junction & Susquehanna railroad, but new of Philadelphia, is visiting among his old friends here. Percy C. Kauffman, esq., of Hanisburg, is visiting his uncle, Hen. C. S. Kauil'man. Miss Edith Denncy, of Harrisbuig, is visiting friends here. Mr. Frank YV. Lstcrliuc pastor and Mr. Gray bill superintendent of the Sunday school of Bethel chutch, were each pre sented with a handsome book, at the Christmas cutcrtaiiime:.tef the Sunday school last evening. Messrs. Drew S. Ileiter and Jei. II. Mc Fadden, Columbia boy.--, who mm Jillin situations in Philadelphia, and have been spending their holidays among their old friends.left this morning upon a shei t visit te Harrisburg, Alteena and Leck Haven. Ice cutting is away below par te-day. The men almost parish with the intcn'e cold. Railroad men are having a very rough time of it just new. The passenger trains barely manage te inn en time, but the freight men have te Miller. It takes a long time te run from Columbia te Philadel phia. We have seen quite a number of young men this morning who repeit frost-bitten cars. This is just the kind of weather for little inconveniences of that nature. Matrimonial. At St. James church, this meiuiug at 11 o'clock, in presence el a large and select assemblage. Rev. C. F. Knight, D. D., rector of St. James, united in marriage Mr. Edward Cewcll, of Philadelphia, and Miss Mary Slaymakcr, daughter of Henry E. Slaymakcr, of this city. The bride and groom were attended by Miss Sue Slay makcr, sister of the bride, as bridesmaid, and Mr. Quarles, or New Yeik, as grooms man. Mr. Willis B. Musserand Mr. J. B. Rupley officiated as ushers. After the marriage the party repaired te the l evi dence of the bride's parents, where the re ception was held from 11 te 1:30 o'clock. The presents received by the bride were numerous and elegant. At a quarter be fore 2 o'clock this afternoon tiic bridal party left this city for Philadelphia. Serious Charges Philip Hettcnstcin, a man ied man, and ; Barbara Myers, a single woman, weie ar- j raigned before Aldcrmau Dennelly, the former being charged with adultery ami the latter with fornication. They gave bail te answer at court, and as seen as they were discharged the two went oft" in com pany together the girl refusing te go home te her parents. Destitute. A German family consisting of husband, wife aud two small children, were picked up en the street this morning aud taken before Mayer MacGenigle. They were entirely destitute, aud said they had been forwarded from Philadelphia en a pass furnished by Mayer Stokley. They weic sent te the almshouse until belter quarters can be found for them. L.euk Out for the 8uns Eclipse. The solar eclipse te-morrow will net be large enough te diminish the sun's bright ness perceptibly, less than one-third of the dise being covered at the time of the greatest obscuration, seen after the sun rises. Nevertheless there will net be another visible here for five years, se get up and leek for it. i Death of Edw. A. Scner. Mr. Sener, brother of the Sencr Bres., lumbers merchants, and seu of the late . Gotlieb Scner, died te-day at his mother's residence, Ne. 220 North Prince street. Sale of Tobacco. Mr. David H. Weaver, of Leacock, has sold te Sigel & Motrin, of Monterey, four acres of 1880 tobacco, for 23, 10 and 5. i:OOR NOTICES. Aycr & Sen's Newspaper Annual. Wc received some time since from N. W. Ayer & Sen their American ncwsfiapcr annual of 1830, a handsome book of ever 600 pages, which is, as they say, the "first effort te produce an accurate, im partial and serviceable directory of the American Press." We hitherto have failed te notice it, finding that se far as our knowledge gees of the newspapers whose circulation it. gives, it was net "accurate or serviceable.' Doubt less it is impartial, as the publishers have no icasen te be partial. But they are in the difficulty of all compilers of newspaper directories; they de netvciify the information they assume te give. In most cases they cannot; it is impesMblc for them te ascertain the circulation of newspapers unless the publishers give them te them correctly. This they de net de, as we find en consulting this book. And as far as this feature gees, which is the main one of the work, it is'ef less than no value, as its information, be ing fabc, is misleading. We would have avoided saying this in criticism of Aver & Sen's book, but aa we te-day receive a second request for a no tice of it, we comply. Nevlu'8 Vignettes of Travel. The highly interesting-letters -written for the Philadelphia Frets by Mr. W. W. Nevin when in Europe, many of which were republished in the Intelligencer, have been recast and published in book form by Lippincotts under the title of "Vignettes of Travel," aud charming ones they arc. The prosy narrative ct many travelers, their barrren guide book style, or the gush of se many ethers who rhapsodize ever foreign institutions indis criminately, have given the public a deserved prejudice against books of travel. Se many people who imagine them selves travelers use their opportunities te peer purpose, and aggravate the offense by imposing still worse books about it upon the public, that, with our ready daily com munication with foreign countries, the reading public have come te depend upon the regular newspaper correspondents or the personal rejwrt of their friends for in formation about people and places, man ners and institutions abroad. After all, the highest purpose et foreign travel is the better appreciation and un derstanding of our own institutions, gov ernmental and social. Paradoxical as this may seem Mr. Xcviu's book proves it. His observations weie made with a view te in stitute and cairy out comparative studies of social and political life in ether coun tries, since in the modern development of .science comparative study has been the rule of advancement. What we knew and what we are cau best be determined by what ethor na tions knew and what they arc. England is se nearly kin te us in her language, her laws aud her literature, that this study be comes of greatest profit te the American citizen and traveler from the observation of her institutions. This view was made by the author with the acutcness of a scholar, the pride of a patriot and the op ep pnitunitics that offered te an accom plished gentleman. His descnptiens of town and country life in Eng land,- and especially in the easy famil iar style of comparisons of English towns and shiies with their Pennsylvania name sakes, are felicitous and give his book a marked degree of local interest here. But its highest merit is reached in its philo sophical and practical comparisons of the English methods of education aud politics. We knew se little of English politics that our judgment of them is apt te be that of the vainglorious enthusiast or the carping cynic. Mr. 2fcvin introduces us te the contemplation of English politics under its prevailing fundamental aspect, the transi tion of .sovereign power going en there new in the development of the English man ft em the "subject" into the "citi zen." The development of our agricul tural reseuiccs is the downfall of Eng land's landed system .and the leveling of her " clashes." The description of a parliamentary election wiil be found of special interest in comparison with our recent national struggle. The ac count given of the English civil service, the houses of Parliament and the prerogatives of the crown aie full of interest te the American political student. Mr. Xcviu takes us thieugh the Londen which litera ture has made se familiar te us, and we gratefully ledge and dine with him at the historic tavern of Lamb and Goldsmith and Dickens. In Scotland and Italy and Reme we fellow the writer mere with a view te the picturesque and historical, and his de scriptions everywhere are felicitous and have the merit of telling us what we want te knew and in language that we can understand. The writer had, we imagine, special opportunities te visw and measure the social development of modern Italy, and net the least interesting feature of these letters is the account given of the transition going en there, even te a greater extent than in conservative England. While Americans have less of kinship and sympa thy witu the Southern nations, the cause of libeity and its advancement has had no mere romantic career than in Italy, and wherever freedom throbs the triumphs of the Italian patriot have been watched with a solicitude that continues te fellow the social and religious i evolution and the establishment of modern institutions in that great centre of civilization, past and future. A most valu able appendix te the "Vignettes" is their hints te travelers the result of cx pei icucc and suggested with a view te the health, comfort, convenience and economy of these who go abroad. These who read it and pielit by it before taking passage will save time and money and avoid an noyance. The " Vignettes " are published in fitting retting. Frem L. FenDersinith's hook store.
