The original scckcl pear tree, leU years
old, stands en the sheif the Delaware.
This tree was produced from a seed that
was washed ashore.
Samuel Meedy, of Charlcstewn, Vt., is
the champion gourmand of the world. He
is 35 years, and lives en the peer farm in
that town. Net long age, at a single sit
ting in the hotel in Island Pend, he dis
posed of six quarts of oysters, with soup,
eight dozen crackers, forty large dough
nuts, and mx mince pies. lie claims that
his mother can beat him, as he has known
her te eat a ten quart pan of baked beans
at one sitting.
That pride efhe American dinner tabic,
the turkey, has graced the Christmas feast
longer, perhaps, thau is generally known.
Tusscr mentions it as forming part of the
Christmas dinner of an English firmer in
.1578.
Eeefe. mutton, and perkc, slued pies of the
best, . , ,,
Pijj, veal, geese, :iml capon, anil turfcic well
drcst.
The Christmas fai c long years age was
nobly illustrated by the .size of some of
the Christinas iics. As an illustration of
the grand scale en which these were occa
sionally made, wc may quote frd'ni the
books el the Salter's company, in Londen,
an account of a pic made by the company's
cook iii 18:50. It consisted el a peasant,
hare, and a capon, two partridges, two
pigeons and two rabbits, all boned and
put into paste in the shape of a bird, with
the livers and hearts, two mutton kidneys,
forced meats and egg balls, seasoning,
spice, catsup and pickled mushrooms,
iilled up with gravy made from the vari
ous bones.
Dr. Suheinbcig, of Heading, in the early
pait of his life, hpent a Christmas at Pari

desirous of celebrating the season in the
manner of their own country, by liav mg,
as one dish at limit- table, an English
plum pudding; but no cook was found
equal te the task of making it. A clergy
man of the party had, indeed, a recipe
book, but this did net suHicieutly explain
the process. Dr. Sehembcrg, however,
supplied all that was wanting, by throw
ing the recipe into the form of a prescrip prescrip
tie l, and sending ic te the apothecary te
be made up. Te prevent any chauce of
mistake, he directed that it should be
boiled in a cloth. At the specified hour
it arrived, borne by the apothecary's as
sistant, and preceded by the apothecary
. himself, dressed according te the prefes
sienal formality of the tune, with a sword.
Seeing, en his entry into the apartment,
instead of signs of sickness, a table well
filled, and sun etiuded by a company of
very merry faces, he icrccivcd that he was
made a parly in a joke that turned en
himself, and indignantly laid his hand en
his sword, but an invitation te taste his
own t enkrry appeased him, and all was
well.
Mince pies can claim autiquity as well as
everything else. They were known and
highly popular under the name of mutton
pies as early as 15015. They were also
called slued and Christmas pies, or
"minched" pies, according te llraud.
Seldcn says they were baked in a collin cellin
shaped crust, intended te represent the
manger w herein the infant Saviour was
laid. This .statement, however, was in
correct, as in old English cookery books
this eni't of a pie is generally eallcd "the
coffin."" In Mcriick's time it was custom
ary te set a watch en the mince pies en
Christmay eve, lest some greedy lingers
should touch them a practice he thus joc
ularly refers te

The general improvement in business the past year, with the prospect et a very lar"0 in
creased demand for all kinds of Dress Goods, induced all American buyers of Foreign Goods te
place immense orders. This was universally the case, se much se that, perhaps without exag
geration, 50 per eent. mere goods were imported than the country could possibly consume. As
a consequence, there has been a great break in prices in a great many rabrics, which we s'lall
