On Christmas theic was a great deal of
drunkenness in the city and there were
several fights, none of which were very
herieus.
In the afternoon a ciewd of boy.-, fol
lowed several Italian musicians te the co:I
nor of Lime and Orange sticcts. They
kept teasing the players until one of them
drew a revolver and fired it. Ne one was
hurt, but the firing had the effect of
quickly dispersing the crowd.

and "Nigger" Bender went into the oyster
saloon of J. W. Woeltcn, under Hath von
& Fisher's clothing stoic. Beth wcie
drunk and they called for ey.stei.-, each of
them receiving several plates. After eat
ing them they refused te pay fur them.
Sanders picked up a bowl of eystcis which
was standing en the liar and ate a number
of them. He and his pal amused themselves
by breaking up all the oyster dishes they
could reach. They thieatened te de the
proprietor of the saloon haun also, and
they probably would have done se had net

Captain II. U. Power, of the City, enter
tained the patrons of that popular hestchy
with a royal set-out, which was .s-iiead in
the dining room, and was as captivating te
the eye as it was grateful te the stomach.
The egg-neg was delicious and all the

Dancing Sociable.

of Mr. William Bainitz. It was aline
success, delightful music being furnished

In the eaily paitef the evening the United
Brcthi en Sunday school gave a pleasing

representation of the ''old woman who
lived in a shoe.'' Each of the sehelais ic
eeived a picscnt. In the beautiful Bethel
church an unusually geed pregramme was
carried aut. The altar was nicely though
net elaborately littcd up for the occasion.
The exercises embraced a number of dia
logues, charades and tableaux, besides
seme geed music en the violin, harmonica
and harp.
A. B. Landis, of the Land is coach

by presenting a turkey te each one.
Thieves have been prowling around this
neighborhood with unusual fieqncncy the
present winter and as a result et the r;ii l.s
a number of houses were broken into, but it j
was net until Thuisday iiS-ht that they suc
ceeded iu stealing anything efgieat value,
and that, tee, after having tried te break
in at three or four places ei. New Haven
street, namely, at '. G. Shirk's, Benjamin
Hestcttcr's, Samuel Shoekeis's and David
Lcib's. At the last named place an en
trance was effected through the cellar.
The thief was undistm bed and took with
him a let of valuable jewclry four
geld pius, a geld nceklaee, n .scarf
pin with tuii-ueis setting a cashmere
dress pattern, underwear, Kid gloves,
shoes, etc., net value net less than 100.
During the night a light snow had fallen,
and in the morning, when the robbery w.is
discovered, Mr. Leib tracked the thief as
far as Hiestand's lumber vaid. Marietta.
where he lest all trace of him. At Mr.
Shoekcrs's he entered the cellar, but could
go te no ether parts of Hie house. Hcie
he took a let of meat. Frem the p;antity
of articles stolen it seems as if the lead
would have been tee heavy for one te carry
a long distance. It is believed that some
of the stolen pre-icriy went te Marrittta or
Columbia, and that a pait remains in this
vicinity.
Auctioneer L. D. Gallagher is already
employed te call no less than thiity sales
of personal piepcity.
The village of Spiingville has put live
couples in the matrimonial market during
holiday season.
Jehn Casscl and Tilghman Uestettei,
who have spent the last ten months iu the
West, came back iu lime te cat their
turkey dinner at home.
Among the Mennt Jey boys who spent
Christmas in the borough are, Lincoln
Geed, Budd Cunningham, Frank Shell, of
Philadelphia, Geerge Deyle and C. E.
Geyer, of Lebanon Valley college, ami
Clayten Heffman, of Millcrsvillc normal
school.

A Yeung Weman Dies Frem the i;ilecls cf

Emma E. Miller, an uumairied wemau
aged 21 years, who resided with Win.
Myers, in the borough of Washington,
died en Thursday under rather peculiar
circumstances. The young woman's
home is iu Adams county, where her
mother resides, her father being dead.
Six weeks age she went te live with the
family of Mr. Myers as a domestic. While
there it was noticed she was enciente. On
Wednesday she was found lying
unconscious iu her bed room. She
was taken with convulsions seen
afterwards and these continued at inter
vals up te the time of her death, which
occurred en" Thursday. Dr. Biuklcy was
called iu after thejgirl was taken with con
vulsions, butjwas uuablc te alleviate her
sufferings, as she was net conscious at any
time, and was thefere unable te explain
anything.
A small bottle about two-thirds full
of some kind of drugs was found lying
alongside of the girl's bedside. It is sup
posed that the wemau took this drug bli
the purpose of procuring an aboitieu and
it caused her death. Where she obtained
the diug is uet known. The bottle with
the remaining portion of its contents was
taken te Columbia by Dr. Craig and it will
be analyzed. .
Deputy Corener Seiple impaneled a jury
composed of D. R. Sayler, Jes. :Funk, J.
B. Douglass, Jacob Stamau, Jacob Walker
and Jehn P. Frank. They found that the
woman came te her death from drugs
administered by her own hand for the pur
pose of pieducing an abortion."

The Christmas festivities were begun
long before daylight by a band of colored
citizens who as has been the custom for
years matched thieugh our principal
streets singing their Christmas songs as
only darkeys can. Next came eaily mass
at St. Peter's and Hely Trinity Catholic
churches. A Christmas morning service
at the Hcfei med church and a children's
entcitainineutat the United Brethren, with
Clnibtmas tice and presents for the chil
dren. At eight o'clock high mass was
celebrated at both the Catholic churches
and again at 10 o'clock. At 10:30 o'clock
Chi ilmassei vices were held hi St. Paul's
Episcopal church, which as usual was beau
tifully dcceiatcd with flower., spruce and
holly wi ought into wicaths and hung in
festoon.-, about the inside of the chinch.
Miss Bella Hutter, organist, and the church
choir lendeied several appiopiiate selec
tions very successfully. In the evening
Christmas entcitainnicnts wcjc held in the
following churches Methodist, E. E.
Lutheran, Reformed and United IJiethren.
These services consisted of songs, carols,
select leadings and addresses with pre
sents for the little ones. Christmas enter
tainments wcic ah-e held in the German
Lutheran churches.
Places of business, except candy and
cigar stoics and saloons, were closed; the
postelficc kept Suuday hours ; the Christ
mas whisky seemed seething and even
diunkcn men wcie peaceable; the Sus
quehanna lolling mill hands were paid for
two weeks ; the snow sheveleis had plenty

evening was a grand success.
On Christmas meiniugas Mrs. Cenrad
Hew eis, an aged lady, was returning home
fiem eaily mass she slipped en an icy
pavement and, falling, struck her head
against a stone step and almost immedi
ately umpired. Deputy Corener Jehn P.
Fiank held an inquest and rendered a ver
dict that deceased came te her death from
"loncu.ssien of the brain caused by strik
ing her head upon a stone step, c.," as
above.
Died at her late lesidence en Chestnut
street, Mis" Catharine Cele after a linger
ing illness The funeial took place this
afternoon, 'j lemains te be interred at
.Marietta.
On Friday meining Miss 1'e.ut, leaiding
011 Xeith Thiid street, slipped and fell
down a cellar stab way and sustained a
fracture of the wrist. This lady had an
arm broken by a fall about live or six
cars age.

G. W. Etter, esq., of Middlctewn, pre

While Mrs. E. H.'Ivaullmau, residing en
the llairishuig turnpike was putting the
Christmas turkey into the stove, she upset
a pet of boiling water, terribly scalding
her head and face.
W. A. Bell, aged eO, a contractor of
Dauphin, Pa., well-known here, died yes
tciday.

in which were T. C. Myers and Levi W.
Grolf, breaking the sleigh, throwing out
both occupants, and severely injuring Mr.
Greff, who was stiuck in the breast with
one of the shafts.
Ceuit met en Christmas day at 10
o'clock iu the 11101 ning. The judgment
docket was called and 17 judgments wet c
entered for different reasons. It met
again this morning and the cases in or
phans' ceuil are being argued.

Oil Salui day night the home entertain
ment by Tem Daily's minstrel and variety
tioupe came off in Fulton opera house
before a very laigc audience. The per
formance was iirst-class throughout, most
of the well-known ncteis of the city tak
ing part iu it. Charles Shay and Geerge
Myers "worked" the bones cud and
Dan Clemens and Jehn Itctalick were en
the taniberinc chairs, with Tem Daily as
interlocutor.
The songs were tendered iu geed style by
the quintet. The features of the second
part of the show were Coalman and Tem Tem
pleten's clog, acrobatic acts by Cum
mings, McCulley, Witmer and Hambright
(iu which Cummings threw a double
summer sault from his knees), musical ex
ercises by Itetallick and Clemens, aged
negie impeisonatiens by Charles Shay,
song and daucc by the Gara Brethers,
banjo playing by Jehu Itetallick and cor
net sole "by Ferd Weber. The perform
ance concluded with the farce of " Mrs.
Malency's Bearding Heuse-'' which was
acted iu capital style. All present voted
the show a success.
Kali! eat Wreck.
On Friday night, or rather very early
Saturday morning, a train of freight cars
drawn by engine 287, left the track at
Is'eith Bend, a short distance east of Chris
tiana the engine, tank and twelve cars
being piled upon the south track, blocking
it up for the space of ten hours. Brakes
man JaceT Hampton, a resident of Phila
delphia, was caught in the wreck and se
firmly wedged in under the trucks of a car
leaded with telegrat)h poles, that it was
t mpessible for a long time te extricate
him. When finally get out, it was ascer
tained that both his legs were broken, his
head badly cut and otherwise se seriously
injured that there are small hopes or his
recovery. The accident is said te have
been caused by the snow en the track.

Harlz. This evening Hartz, the famous il
lusionist, begins a week's engagement at the
opera beuse. His sleight of-hand performances
are described as nothing short et marvelous,
anil the variety features cf the piegrammc as
of high order. Presents will be given away.

Allentown, Pa., Dec. 27. Jacob Go Ge
gel and his wife, Anna, an aged couple re
siding four miles from Bethlehem. Pa..
were found dead in their bed this morn
ing. Their heads were nearly severed
irem the uedies and a bloody axe was
found in the apartment. The walls were
splashed with bleed and altogether the
room presented a shocking sight. Jeseph
Snyder who bearded with the Gegels
was believed te be the murderer.
He was caught by an infuriated mob seen
after the discovery of the crime and was
hanged te the nearest tree. Gegel was a
day laborer and leaves three children. The
motive for the double murder is unknown
