An Editor's Reasons.
T lie pioneer editors of Michigan were a
frank and truthful let of men, as can be
proven by an accident called te mind the
ether day in connection with the name of
Mark Williams, who gave up his life for a
belter one net long age. Mark had a paper
in Clinten county. It was a wee littls
sheet with a huudrcd subscribers, printed
the handiest way, and the office wa3 se
poorly supplied that several different fonts
of type had te be used te set up the read
ing matter. One day the paper came out
with a fierce attack en a state official at
Lansing. lie was called a robber, liar,
thief and various ether epithets, and no
pains was spared te skin him and hang his
hide en the ft nee.
About a week from that date Mark set
smoking beech leaves and tobacco mixed
in equal parts, when a stranger entered.
He was a big bread-shouldered man, with
awful lists and a wicked eye, and he get
down te business bv saying :
" Arc you Mark Williams ?"'
' Well, y-e-s, 1 suppose se," was the
hesitating lcply.
44 And you run this paper ?"
" Well kinder run it, 1 suppose."
44 Very well. I am Mr. , of Lans
ing, the man whom you abused se savage
ly in your columns last week !"
"Ne !"
" Yes, I am, and propose te give you the
worst mauling a Western slanderer ever
leceivcd !"'
"Say, arc you really Mr. '."' asked
Mark.
44 1 a;n, of course I am, and while I am
taking off my coat you may give me your
reasons for publishing that slanderous ar
ticle.' 44 I had two reasons, sir."'
"What arc they?"
"Well, in tlie first place, I thought you
weic a little runt of a man, about four
feet high and about dead with the asthma,
and in tiic next place I thought tlie reads
wcie se infernal bad you could never get

The straightforward confession should
have saved Mark, bi:l it didn't. The
visitor made a dive for him, took out a
handful of hair, and when the editor
jumped through the only window in his
office he was followed and chased into an
old slashing, where he had te remain hid
den until midnight. That accident shaped
his future policy, as he one ilay explained :

beauty-spot will nestle in behind the left
car, where it is apparently secure trem a
blew as a calm centrej; but the native sim
ply gives it a puff clear around his head
