FRIDAY EVENING, DEC. 17, 1880.
The Sea Serpent's Youngster.
Frank Buckland, the natural history
writer, in a recent number of Land and
Water, says :
The Duke of Sutherland hah wisely in
stituted at Dunrebiu Castle, Golspie, X. B.,
a museum, te which his tenants send any
thing rare or remarkable discovered en
the properly.
During the past week his secretary, Mr.
Wright, has kindly informed me of a most
raarvcleusly interesting addition te the
aquaria of the museum, namely, a very
rare specimen of a gigantic sea worm,
caught among tome sea wrack by some of
the duke's deep sea-line men, oft' Golspie.
This remarkable worm, when full-sized,
is said te attain the length of from eighty
te ninety feet ; he is capable of shrinking
himself up te a very much smaller length.
He is as flat as a ribbon, and only five or
six lines in width, of a brown violet color,
and smooth and shilling like varnished
leather. Very little if anything is known
of the habits of this monster worm, except
that he lurks under stones and the hollow
of rocks, whciehe coils himself up into a
heap of knots, which he is incessantly
loosening and tightening. He has, how
ever, the power of undoing his
knots and extending himself in a
straight line. In this way he swims
or rather glides through the water, pro
pelling himself by means of line cilia).
When he has found a new domicile suited
te his purpose he coils himself up again
into knots. His long dark-colored ribbon
like body is terminated by a head which is
of a somewhat snake-like appearance,
only there is no forked tongue nor teeth
poisonous or otherwise.
The duke's specimen is apparently a
small one between four and live feet long,
but perhaps the creature has net uncoiled
himself his whole length. His scientific
name is the "Linens Marinus." There is
a beautiful figure of him in the proceedings
of the Hay Society, IS":!.

Theic is a worse scandal than a clergy
man in prison, and that is a bishop in peril
of bodily assault from a mob whom he has
just tried te disperse with the Apostolic
Benediction. This is what is reported te
have happened te the 'bishop of Roches
ter, England, rcceiitlv.. The living of St.
Paul's, Lerrimer-squaie. Walworth, is
vacant, and the Bishop is filling it up by
an evangelical clergyman. This he an
nounced te the congregation at the end of
his sermon. ' 1 tell you face te face," he
said, "with my own lips, what will net
surprise you, that whatever is illegal in
the services here will have te be discen
tinned."' A great commotion instantly
followed loud hisses en one side and
shouts of applause en the ether, with the
screams of women sounding shrilly ever
both. "Oh his way te the vicarage te
disrobe," the report proceeds, "the
bishop was the .subject of a hostile demon
stration, a great mob following him, hoot
ing and yelling, and greeting him with
many uncomplimentary remarks. At one
point a rush was made, and but for the in
terposition of the police his lordship
would have been assaulted. As he left
the vicarage and drove away, the ill feel
ing of the congregation was again mani
fested, and his carnages was followed te
the confines of the parish by a large
crowd, who kept tip a c-mtiuuatinu of
groans and histes." This scene is the
practical comment en the bishop's aphor
ism that "congregational independence is
fatal te the liberties of the church."
Kriss Krir.gh' in Haifinierc.
The mayor of IJaltiinere ha within the
past few days received no less than forty
Ictteis addicssed in vaiieus ways te Santa
Clans. The postefiice efiieials, when they
receive a letter mailed te Kriss Kriugle,
put it in the mayor's box. Tlic compli
ment, if it can ! called such, is becoming
rather alloying, and the mayor wishes it
understood thaf he is no' Kriss Kringle, or
Santa Clans, and that he docs net care te
receive that worthy party's mail ; and as
much as the mayor would like te comply
with the requests of the real children who
write te him. it is but just te say that his
purse would have te be very large and full
for him te supply al! their wants. He
could net give te one, without giving-te
all, and hence he is obliged, in self defence
te decline all. The letters nearly all ask
for toys. Of course, among them can be
found the attempt of grown boys, who
write letters they suppose te be witty, but
which iu reality are very flat. Others
send vulgar notes, but the majority are
from innocent confiding children, and
some arc childlike and amusing. They
are variously addressed many te " Santa
Clans, at the p;st efiiee ;"' ethers te Kriss
Kriugle North Pele; one or two te "Mr.
Santa Clans Latrebe: mere again te "Old
Kriss, care of Mayer Latrobe ;"' and a few
directed te the mayor himself. Seme arc
stamped and a great many are net.
