THURSDAY EVENING, DEC. 16, 1880
Well-Water.
Germautewn Telegraph.
Wells in these parts have often been low,
but never perhaps lower than they have
been most of the past summer and autumn.
Many were looking anxiously for rain, se
that the springs might rise again. But
local rains have nothing te de with our
wells, and this can be seen by any one who
has anything te de with digging of the
ground. It makes no difference hew dry
or hew wet may be the summer season;
if in the fall wc dig a few feet we find the
ground dry. Ne rain penetrates te
any great depth after the spring
rains are ever and before the regular
autumn-soakers commence. Sometimes
wc have rain several days in a week, and
considerable of it at a time, yet, after all
this, peeple en digging down find the earth
dry six inches from the surface. In fact,
the earth has as much as it can de in any
season te meet the demands en it from
the vegetation growing en its surface.
As fast as the surface dries from the heat
there is a continual flew from the lower
-portions te suply the waste, just as water
in a saucer will Hew te the top of a sponge,
se that in the cud the saucer is dryer than
the sponge in it. Thus the substratum in
a dry season is often dryer than the earth
loosened by cultivation en the surface.
The water which feeds springs and
wells docs net come from local rains, ex
cept thcy'are very shallow, but often hun
dreds of miles away. The frcr.1 cracks
and breaks up the rocky faces of moun
tains, and the rains and melting snows
sometimes many feet in depth descend
through the clefts. Heclcs de net absorb
water as earth docs. Collected in this
way, the water sinks deep into" the earth
in the fissures, following the strata te long
distances and appearing again only when
the rocky veins crop up near the surface.
These, therefore, who are looking for deep
water in their wells and high water in their
springs, have rather te pray for mountain
rains than local showers which serve our
crops, nothing mere after summer
weather once sets in.
Black Ants mid Insect Destroyers.
The Geneva Continent says : " Many of
the leading orchard proprietors in North
ern Italy and Southern Germany arc en
thusiastic cultivators of the black ant,
which industrious insect they held in high
esteem as the fruit grower's beat friend.
They establish ant-hills in their orchards,
and leave the police service of their fruit
trees entirely Je the tiny sable colonists,
which pass ail their time in climbing up
the stems of the fruit trees, cleausiug their
boughs and leaves of malefactors, mature
as well as cmbryelic. and descending,
laden with spoils, te mother earth,
where they comfortably consume or pru
dently store away their booty. They cap
ture the eggs of caterpillars, grubs and
canker-worms; they "requisition" all
the countless vaiictics of jeaf-lice that
strip trees of their young foliage ; they
break up the chrysalides awaiting trans
formation, and carry them oil' in minute
morsels ; they never meddle with sound
fruit, but only invade such apples, pears
and plums as havealrcady been penetrated
by the canker, which they remorselessly
pursue te its fastnesses within the very
heart of the fruit. Nowhere arc apple and
pear trees se free from blight and destruc
tive insects as in the immediate neighbor
hood of an ant-hill live, or six years old.
The favorite feed of ants would appear te
be the larva" and pupa- of these creatines
which spend the whole of their brief ex
istences in devouring tiic tender sheets
and juvenile leaves of -fruit trees. Uut
nothing in the way of creeping or station statien
.ary prayers upon vegetation conies amiss
te the indefatigable and insatiable ant,
whose animosity against the minuter in
sect tribes is se inveterate that " his great
revenge hath stomach for them all"
Mashing Grain.
A new machine has been put in opera
in Rochester, N. Y., for grinding grain,
which it is said will revolutionize the
milling trade, especially in the grinding of
wheat. The change consists in crushing
the grain between rollers instead of grind
ing it by stones. The invention is called
the Hungarian system, and this is its first
introduction into New Yerk state, out of
which it probably will net extend.
Removing Candle Grease.
The French, who use candles te a great
er extent than any ether nation, have a
way of effacing caudle grease which is
worth knowing. Instead of applying a
het iron, they use a few drops of spirits of
wine, rubbing the spot with the hand.
The grease becomes powder and leaves no
trace.
Its Ac! ion is Sure and Safe.
The celebrated remedy Kidney-XX'ert can
new be obtained in I lie usual dry vegetable
form, or in liquid lenn. It is run in the latter
way ler the cpccial convenience el these who
cannot readily prepare it. It will be ieinul
very concentrated and will act with ciual cfli
