Tlie following advice ami comment:! en this subject, which we find in the Chicago Field, is timely and mere importance than a large majority of persons keeping horses ever dream of. They cannot but knew, however, hew much depends en the sound condition of the horses hoofs. They cannot but observe, when a horseman ex amines an animal, that the hoof is the first object that attracts his attention, and with what care he scrutinizes every part of it. Hence, the reiiKitks which wc append will be acknowledged te be well-expressed and the information imparted te be worth the first consideration in the management of the hoof of the hm.se : "Lack of moisture i.. net necessarily a cause el briltlencss el the hoof, since the horse has a stieng hoof. A continued drought is especially dangerous when it acts en a feet accustomed te abundance of water. Under the action of water the horn cells absorb, incicase in size and push each ether apart. Uy this action, tee, some of the gelatinous matter that builds up the horn is dissolved out, and when the hoof is again allowed te dry it has lest its power of cohesion. Ihcuiuic frequently the pieccss of soaking and drying is re peated the mere hurtful it proves. te the hoof, which becomes increasingly brittle and liable te split up. If, farther, this tendency te brittlcness has been in bred through generations of horses, where the feet aic alternately soaked by drench ing rains, and withered by drying suns, tlie danger is proportionately increased, and the feet of .such a race or horses arc especially liable te splitting and injury. It is net habitual dryness that injures, it is the alternations of rain and drought. While upon this subject it may be well te note that the evil eilccts of moisture may be largely waided oil' by smearing the moistened feet with an impervious oily agent before exposing it te the drying pro cess. In this way the moisture that has been absorbed by the horn is retained, the sudden drying and shrinking arc ob viatcd, and the hein lemains elastic and comparatively leugh. As it is often needful te soak the feet, in warm or cold water, or in peultics in eases of disease, it is all-impeitaut that the above named pie caution should be constantly borne in mind, and that the softened feet should be smeared throughout with some hoof oint ment before itisallowetlte dry andharden. Fer this purpose nothing i.s simpler nor better than a mixture in equal parts of tar and wli.ile oil or laid. I his may he smeared en the feel every ether day. "In addition te the changes of the wea ther, the frequent standing in lettcn dung heaps or the peels of decomposed liquid manure, may be named as causes of biittle hoofs. In tlie dung heap there is net only the liieistuie and steam soaking and soft ening the hoof, but theic is abundance of ammonia gas. which is especially calculated te soften, dissolve and destroy the horn. Rotten nianine and putrid liquors, theie theie fere, arc much mete injurious than pure water, muddy peels or wet clay Again the emanations el this kind are far from conducive te general health, se that they prove hurtful in two ways, lii.-t, by diiccl- ly destroying the substance el the hoof, and second, bj mincing the animal vigor, the power of digestion and as.-imilatien, and the pewer ei s-ccreting geed hein. Standing i:i such decomposing organic matter is still mere injurious however, when the animal is confined te a stall or box, for here the injurious effect of inac tivity is added te the abeve named condi tions. I'Leng exposure te wet and mud also at this time of j car freduently produce cracks and ether troubles in her.ses' feet. The prevention is in kcepisig the feet clean by frequent washing and wiping dry with a ceaise stable cloth. A little crude pctio pctie lcum applied te the feet before the horses are taken from the .stable will help greatly in preventing them from becoming crack ed. If the feet aie already in bad shape they should be bandaged and the hersa kept where it is diy. ' Cleanliness is the most effective prevention of troubles in the feat of horses." flutter ami Cheese Factories, lierinantewn Telcgr.ipli.il Few of the modern contrivances for rendering American farming profitable are deserving of mere attention and encour agement en the part of our farmers them selves than the establishments for the man ufacture of butter and cheese en a large scale, which new flourish se extensively in New Yerk, Xew Jersey. Pennsylvania and Ohie. This business originated in the state of New Yerk, where it has become quite large, and has been the principal cause of building up the dairy interests of the state te such remarkable proportions. Penn sylvania is really one of the very best re gions of the country for dairy farming, but this particular form of utilizing our dairy products was only introduced here long after it had attained great magni tude in Kcw Yerk, and was making rapid headway in Ohie, Indiana and Illinois. This business, besides furnishing staple predncts for the home m irkct adequate te the largest possible demand, has enabled us te become extensive importers of but ter and cheese te Uicat Ihitian and continental Eutepa, wheie Ameri can cheese has become a pre ferred article Although late in turnin" her attention te the establishment of but ter and cheese factories, Pennsylvania seems at last te be going ahead in it labor iously, pcrscvcringly, and with great earnestness, zeal and success. Wherever these factories arc established they at once furnish geed markets for the milk and cream produced by all dairies for miles around. Under such circumstauccs there is every possible inducament te undertake such enterprises wherever the capital can be raised for the purpose.
