MONDAY EVENING, DEC. 6, 1880.
Winter ArraRgemeats.
German town Telegraph.
As we arc new entering upon a four
months of winter weather, in which we
shall have mere or less freezing and thaw
ing, jaining and snowing, and at times
we may say half the time the ground sat
urated with, water, and the walking out
side of the buildings obstructed with mud
and slush, it becomes every head of a fam
ily te make such arrangements about his
premises as shall in a great measure obviate
this very serious inconvenience and pro
moter of sickness, often requiring heavy
doctor's bills, 'te say nothing of less of
time etc. Anyone can very seen estimate
the cost of the necessary walks and reads
about the premises and set it against the
risk and inconvenience wc hare named.
There arc nearly always beards, stones and
bricks about a place ; but when otherwise
they should be purchased aud hauled at odd
times when the team is unemployed,
and then before bad weather sets in say
net later than the first of December
grade the earth a little and lay them firmly
down. Thus, make a dry, hard read te
the cattle stalls, te the pig-pens, te the
horse htablcs, te the pump, the weed-house
te the spring-house ; and then, when the
clothes arc dried out-of-doers, as is gener
ally the case in the country, spread along
the lines which lines should be of galvan
ized wire a thick layer of coal-ashes and
roll it. This should be ronewcdibout once
in the winter.se that the moisture shall net
penetrate through it te the shoes. The
comfort of such an arrangement cannot be
anticipated. Going out, aud attending te
matters aud things about the premises
and returning with dry, clean shoes, is an
enjoyment that must be realized te appre
ciate. In addition te these, there are many
ether little matters that should be pro
vided for before winter hcls in. Bexes and
bands bheuld be set near the house, un
der a shed, and out of view, for collecting
refuse trash of every kind ; but ashes
should never be put in boxes or barrels or
any wooden vessels or thing, owing te dan
ger from fire. Hundreds .of dwellings
have been destroyed from this cause. Fer
ashes it is recommended that a hole, say two
or three feet deep, should be dug in the
ground and walled-up with brick or stone
and left open at one side for the removal
of the ashes when necessary. This once
made will last for a generation, and will
prove a sure protection against any danger
from tlii.s caiibc. Of course there should
be a shelter for the fuel, and kindling weed
should always be prepared for making
iircs. Piles of anything movable that
the wind may disturb should never be
made about the house. The opening and
keeping open of gutters should always be
attended te, and icy walks and places
should be sprinkled with ashes whenever
needed ami without delay.
Beys, when they get old enough, should
be taught te de these things ; and the best
way te teach them is te make them assist
in the work.

The general Improvement in business the past year, with the prospect et a rery large in
creased demand fat all kinds of Dress Goods, induced all American Wen of foreign Goods te

geration, 80 per sent, more'geods were imported than the country could possibly consume. As
a consequence, there has been a great break in prices in a great many fabrics, which we s'lall
