Seme Curious Epitaphs Collected en Leng
IManil anil Elsewhere.
A correspondent of the Sun who makes
a specialty of epitaph. collections is par
ticularly struck with these found en the
east end of Leng Island, for the reason
that they .refer in se many cases te
the nautical life in which be many old
-Leng Islanders engaged. Here in Sag
Harber I llud a stone at the head of a
grave of a sailor, who the inscription ex
plains, "died iu pert." Belew is the fol
lowing :
Rude Boreas' winds and Neptune's wave-.
Have te Bed me te and tre ;
By Ged's decree you plainly see,
I'm harbored here below.
It was the old-time practice here te tell
hew the deceased person lest his life ; hence
I find in this cemetery scores of graves
with the inscription after the names and
dates:

One stone says that the grave's occupant
was "shot by a gunn," and another roan I
find " died by lightnuig." A handsome
shaft stands in the 'Sag Harber cemetery
erected te the memory of sailors killed by
whales. On one side of the monument is
a cut representing a whale striking a small
beat with his flukes and a number of
sailors trying te escape. Out en Bleck
Island I found this ever a sea captain :
He's done a-eatching cud
And gene te meet hit Ged.
In the Sag Harber burial ground three
children of the same parents arc buried.
The epitaphs bear witness that the first
has "Gene te heaven ;" the second "Gene
te meet her brother." The third lias
the following :
Kate, aged 4 years, :t month-,.
'Twos here. 'Tisgenc. Where is it.'
I wondered whether the parents had
changed their religious views, or whether
the youthful Kate had been guilty el sins
that, in the minds of her parents, unlit ted
her for association with her deceased bro
ther and sister, and which made her where
abouts after death conjecture.
The grave of Capt. David Hand, who
died in 1840, at the age of 'SI, is iu -the
same cemetery. He had live wives, who
are all sleeping near him in a row.
Upen the tombstone of his third wife is
the following :
Beheld, yc living mortals, pasdn;; by,
Ifew thick the partners el one husband lie.
Vast and unsearchable the waysel Ged :
Just, but severe, we feel Ills chastening ieiI.
I was told by a descendant of the family
that the captain had secured the affections
of a sixth lady just previous te his death,
whicli leaves the inference that he did net
mean that the ones who had gene before
were te him as a " chastening red."
The following epitaph of a recent date
exhausts the vocabulary of adulation and
suggests a sufficient " cause of death." It
is en a stone near Easthampton, L. I. :
"J. M. G , Esq., age 28.
" It is a but just tribute of respect and
affection te the memory of this excellent
young man te say that he possessed a
strong and improved mind, amiable dispo
sition, dignity of deportment, generosity
of spirit, liberality of sentiment, benevo
lence of feeling, kinducss of heart, truly
characteristic of these Christian principles
which he early imbibed and which inspired
him with patience through a long and dis
tressing illness, stripped death of its ter
rors, the gYave of its gloom, clothed his
face with smiles upon the dying couch,
and filled his soul with the hope of a
blessed immortality."
In New Louden, Conn., is a let contain
ing five graves, these of a man and his
four wives. The women's form four sides
of a square, and the man's is in the centre,
while the inscriptions are as fellows :

A gravestone in Lyens, N. Y., has this :

sequies were properly performed.
A very old gravestone in Xcwurypert,
Mass., has these words :
A resurrection te immortality is here ex
pected for what was mortal of the Clever
end Mr. Jehn llichardsen, once fellow of
Harvard college, afterwards teacher el the
Church of 2cwbury.

A rude headstone iul'ale Pinte county,
. Texas, has the following :
He remained te the last a decided friend
and supporter of Democratic principles
and measures. Blessed arc the dead who
die in the Lord.
In East Haven, Conn., is a stone en
which are chiselled seven faces.
The inscription says :
In memory of Uriel, first son of ". Ed
mund and Mrs. Lydia Bradley, who died
Sept. 20, A. D. 1788. Alse of three pair
of twins, who died A. D. 1788, 'S.), and
1793, '04.
See death remove the eldest son.
Just as the family begun.
And three pair of twins in a short sp.ice,

Tradition says that " Jlrs. Lydia Brad
Icy" was the mother of sixteen children
