AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE TIME
OF LETTING THE MARKET STALLS
AND STANDS.
Section I. Be it ordained by the Select and
Common councils of the city of Lancaster iu
councils assembled. Tnat ier the purpose of fa
cilitating the payment of the current indebted
ness of the said city in each year, that the let
ting of stalls and stands shall be made by auc
tion en the first Wednesday et April n cxt, for
the term of nine months from the date of such
lettings, and that all future lettings shall take
place en the third Wednesday of December in
each year, for the term et one year, commenc
ing euthe first Wednesday in January follow
ing. And the person who shall bid the highest
sum as a bonus or premium, in addition te the
fixed annual rents of the several stalls or
stands, shall be held te be tbe lessee for the
ensuing year. Vacant stalls or stands may be
let by the Market committee for the remainder
et the term ending with the market year.
Section 2. All ordinances or parts of ordi
nances inconsistent with the lorcgeing arc
hereby repeal cd.

Large Mill ISaraed Lives Let.
Portsmouth, N. n., Dec. 4. Shortly
after six o'clock this morning a fire broke
out in the fifth story of the Eearsarge mills.
and in less than an hour the mammoth
brick structure was in ruins. The fire is
reported te have caught from a piece of
waste in the hands of an employee ignit
ing at a gas jet. The fire department
failing te check the fire, the mayor tele
graphed te Ncwburypert for assistance.
At the piesent moment the Free Will
Baptist church opposite the mill, and in a
dangerous proximity te a frame dwelling,
is en fire. It :s reported that a man named
Greenwood, an employee, was burnrd te
death in the mill, while several ethers were
badly burned and cannot recover. In the
present confusion it is impossible te ascer
tain the less en the factory, but it is fully
insured.
Later Details.
The less is estimated at net far from
half a million dollars, besides throwing out
of employment three hundred and fifty
hands, upon the majority of whom much
suffering must fall this winter.
The occupants had a nairew escape,
some of them having te leap ever the
llamcs, and several were severely burned.
One person was burned te death. The
Baptist church was damaged mero by
water than by fire. Sparks ignited several
buildings and much alarm was caused.

Philadelphia, Dec. 4. At the fire at
Martin Landcnbergh's, Frankford avenue,
in Philadelphia, this morning, four men
were injured by falling walls. The total
damage is new estimated at 8100,000.

29th tilt., the umpire haviug allowed Ress
claim of a foul at Hammersmith, was re
peated te-day and resulted iu a victory for
Ress, who weii the race by three lengths.
It will be remembered that the first day's
contest at the finish Trickctt was four
lengths in advance of Ress.
The weather was misty but fine, and
there was a fair sprinkling of spectators
along the bauks of the rivcn The water
was calm and geed tide. Ress rowed in
a jersey, but Trickctt was stripped te the
buff.

Danville, Va., Dec. 4. On Sunday
last at Yanceyville, Caswell county, NX'.,
Mrs. Gertrude New, wife of Mr. Lewis
New, a prominent merchant of that vil
lage, was burned te death, her clothing
having ignited from a lire en the hearth of
her rooms where she was kneeling beside
her infant in prayer, preparatory te at
tending church. The lady had been mar
ried only a year a ml was net 20 years
old.
