LANCASTER DAILY INTE1XIGENCER. FRIDAY DECEMBER 3 1880.
Lancaster Intelligencer.
FRIDAY EVENING, DEC. 3, 1880.
New for Tear Ice Hehscs
Gei man town Telegraph.
There are very few farmers at the pres
ent time, who conduct a mixed husbandry
and are within reach of a metropolitan
market, or of a station, who has net pro
vided himself with an ice house of sufficient
capacity te meet his wants throughout
the year. He finds, tee, that in providing
himself with what was formerly considered
an almost insuperable attainment, an ice
house costs no mere than many a geed
hog pen. We had one built ourselves
twenty-five years age, which cost about
$500, and we could new provide a far su
perior one, for its actual value, for fifty
dollars. Ornamentation is quite out of
place en an ice house. It is net put in a
conspicuous location te be admired and
commented en for its architectural beauty,
but where it will be quite out of sight, if
possible, and where it can be easily ap
proached te. be filled, in a cold exposure,
and where the drainage is perfect.
In saying what we new de about the
cheapness of an ice house, wc de net wish
te be understood that wc approve el tue
man' plaits, or rather no plans, in which
te keep ice throughout even the hotter
portion of the summer. In fact there is a
plan" new before us, appearing in a
Icadingjeurnal which undertakes weekly
te furnish information and instruction te
farmers and ethers en agrestic pursuits,
of which wc arc very certain it possesses
net a single practical idea. In regard te
keeping ice, it recommends, as sufficient
for an "ordinary family," merely the for
mation of a cubical body of ice of about
eight feet, the "blocks te be cut as smooth
as possible and square, se they will fit
closely, and then ice must be chopped-up
fine uudcrewded in between the pieces se
as te make a solid mass," and se en, and a
great deal mere of it. This body must be
cevcred-up with sawdust ; but a large
mass docs net even require sawdust, "only
straw or a double wall of beards," etc.
This is te de everything; but try it and
see.
Nevertheless, the cost of a house in
which ice can be kept for say nine months
in the year, is very trilling. A frame
building of rough beards and timber,
raised from eighteen te twenty-four inches
from the grenud, double-walled with
beards at bottom and sides, from eight te
ten inches apart and filled in with saw
dust, is about all there is te de. The
straw en the top in addition will
answer as a substitute for a double
reefing. The ice should be packed closely
iu blei'S'.s, of course, and en the comple
tion of every layer the small pieces of
blocks lying around and jf net enough
the smaller, irregular blocks should be
broken for the purpose should be thrown
ever te fill up the crevices. The deer or
aperture of the house should be iu parts,
te slide down in a groove, ene en top of
the oilier, se that they can be taken out or
put m as the process of filling or empty
ing may require. Ventilation is an impor
tant matter, and is perhaps best secured
by allowing a strip of say three inches
open around the whole building directly
at the top of the "square." The water
dripping from the ife should be directly
carried away from under the building.
Fiem twenty-five te thirty two-horse
leads of solid ice arc sufficient te supply a
geed sized family fin all it may need for
every ordinary purpose. But if you fellow
the advice of tlie theorists who tell you
that from four te six leads are enough you
will net fellow it mere than once.
