remcbea. Tbcre is a cockroach that makes bis
home en our desk that has get mere sense
than a delinquent subscriber. He if it is
a he one, we are net clear as te that
comes out and sits en the side of the paste
dish, and draws in a long breath. If the
paste is fresh it cats it and wiggles his
polonaise as much as te thank- us, and
gees away refreshed. If the paste is sour
and smells bad, he leeks at us with a
mournful expression,. and 'gees away look
ing as though it was a mighty mean trick
te play en a cockroach, and he runs about
as though he was offended. When a pack
age of wedding cake is placed en the desk
he i? the first te find it out, and he sits
and waits until we cut the string, when he
gees into it and walks all ever the cake till
lie strikes the bridal cake, when he gets
en te it, stands en his head and seems te
say " Yum, yum," and he is as tickled as
a girl with a fresh beau. There is hu
man nature in a cockroach, When a man
comes in and sits around with no business,
en our busy day, and asks questions, and
stays and keeps us from working, the
cockroach will come out and sit en the
inkstand, and leek cress at the visitor as
much as te say : " Why don't you go
about your business and leave the peer
man alone, se he can get some copy,
and net keep us all standing around hsie
doing nothing?" But when the paper is
out, and there is a leek of cheerfulness
about the place, and we are anxious te
have friends call, the cockroach flics arctind
ever the papers and welcomes each caller
as pleasantly as he can and seems te enjoy
it. )ne day the paste smclled pretty bad,
and we poured about a spoonful of whisky
in it and stirred it up. The cockroach
came out te breakfast and we never saw a
person seem te enjoy the meal any mere
than the cockroach did. It seemed as
though he couldn't get enough paste.

and looked cress-eyed. He tried te climb
down oil the paste dish and fell ever him
self and turned a llip-llap en the blotting
paper. Then he looked at us in a sort of
mysterious way, winked one eye, as
much as te say, " Yeu think you

he put one hand te his forehead, as if
in meditation, and staggered off into a
drawer, coining eul'prcscntly with his arm
around another cockroach, and he took
him te the paste pet and he tilled up, tee,
and then they locked arms and paraded
up ami down en the green cloth of the desk
as though singing " We won't go home
till morning." and then kicked ever the
steel pen and acted a geed deal like politi
cians after a caucus. Finally some remark
was made by one of them that didn't suit
and they pitched in and had the worst
light that ever was, after which one rush
ed oil" as if after a policeman and the ether
Maggcied into his hole, and we saw no
mere of our cockroach until the next
meiniug. when he came out with one hand
en his head, and the ether en his stomach
and after smelling of the paste and look
ing sick he walked off te a bottle of selt
zer water and crawled up te the cork and
looked around with an expression se hu
inau that we uncorked the bottle and let
him in, and he drank as though he had
been eating codfish, bince that day he
leeks at us a little suspiciously, and when
the paste smells pcciili.nic gees and gets
another cockroach te canome of it first,
and he watches the effect.
New, you wouldn't believe it, but that
cockroach can tcil the minute he sees a
man whether the man has come in with
a bil! or has conic te pay money. We
don't knew hew he docs it, but when a
man has a bill the cockroach begins te
leek -solemn and mournful, and puts his
liands te his eyes as though weeping. If
a man comes in te pay money the cock
roach leeks glad, a smile plays around
his mouth and lie acts kitieny. He acts
the most human when ladies come into
the office. If a book agent comes in he
makes no attempt te conceal his disgust.
One day an old person came in with a life
of (Jailield and laid it en the table, opened
te the pictuic of the candidate and left it.
The cockieach walked through the violet
ink and get his feet all covered, and then
he walked all ever that book and left his
mark. The woman saw the tracks and
thought we had signed our names, and she
