Charles Germyer, a resident of Walnut street, Harrisburg and a Pennsylvania railroad freight brakeman, received in juries at Sheck's mills this morning from which he died. Frem the meagre reports at band it appears that Germyer, en ar rival of his train at Shech's mills, started te walk ever the cars te- the caboose, en the rear end of the train, and that in at tempting te step from one car te another be feu between tue iwe w wic u;. , the balance of the train passing ever him and severing both legs and the left arm. It is said while walking he became dizzy and misjudged the distance, hence the ac- and misjudged the distance, uence wwac cident. The accident eccured at about five o'clock this morning. As tue ca boese passed ever Germyer's body the conductor of the train heard his cries. The train was stepped and backed te the scene of the accident where the mangled body was found. Germyer was placed in the caboose and brought te Columbia and lived a short time after reaching here. He was a married man, 28 or 20 years of age. Deputy Coreuer Jehn P. Frank em panelled a jury te held an inquest, but as the train men had gene through te Phila delphia the inqnest was continued, r Anether rumor is ripe and ready te pluck te the effect that a shoe factory will be started in Columbia or that such a ven ture is under advisemeut. A gentleman with whom we conversed this morning spoke with confidence en the subject and unhesitatingly gave it credence that is, he was emphatically of the opinion that the question was being considered. We Columbians can easily- accommodate an enterprise of this kind and your corre spondent trusts there is mere in it than idle talk. We have nothing positive te report. Theie was a break in the water pipe en Walnut street, near Third, yesterday after noon. Skating is at an end for the time being. It required two long poles, two ropes and two men te get a fractious steer through town llib morning. Bertie, the beveu-ycar-eld son of Philip Kline, residing en Locust street near Eighth, died at about 5 o'clock this morn ing of diphtheria. Dr. Kline has brought, before Justice Evans, the charge of disorderly conduct against several boys residing en the Chest nut Hill pike, near Kinderhook and the justice will issue warrants for their ar rest. It h said that Undertaker Musser had five corpses te coffin this morning. Mor tality brings riches te the persuasion. A whist party of a dozen persons spent last evening very pleasantly at the resi dence of Mr. F. A. Bennett en Walnut street, Ne. 230. This morning's verdict : Snow last night, hail, lain and sleet this morning, and dis agreeable, slushy walking for te-day, and possibly te-morrow and the next day. Our storekeepers ami notably the sta tioners and confectioners we had almost forgotten the dealers in notions are new arranging or have arranged their windows with the style of goods that Christinas makes necessary, and we have iu that if in nothing else, a holiday appearance. Seme of the windows arc very handsomely fixed up and in almost every store the Christ mas goods are exhibited te their best ad vantage Prof. McGuire's dancing class Ne. 1 met last evening in Shuler's hall. The cfcas has a couple of new members added te it. The dealers who furnish milk for the consumption of Columbians have put their heads together and decided te sell new milk hereafter at eight cents pcr.quait in place of six cents as heretofore. The new arrangement gees into effect today, and new milk costs 553 per cent mere than it has cost for the past six months. The wreck at Itohrerstewnthis morning interfered seriously with the running of trains. Beth passengers and freight were detained and thrown all out of time. On getting up this morning we found a nice turkey perched en a tree in our back yard. Wc thought it would make a royal Christmas dinner, but then the owner had te turn up. We surrendered. A couple of gunners just arrived here en the train from Yerk with a splendid string of parti idges sixty-three we are informed. Wc have net time te leek the matter up and find out who they are. Big Game. Geerge Kirchcr, proprietor of the Eagle hotel, corner East King and Lime streets, this morning received by express a 100 pound black bear, -from a friend in Tyrene by whom it was shot. The animal has been hanging iu front of the hotel all day, and it has been looked at by large crowds. S. W. Shadlc, esq., has just returned, from a trip te his old home, in Mifflin county. During his visit he spent some time gunning. lie was quite successful as he killed a large deer and a number of wild turkeys. Washington Borough Items. Ducks are plenty en the river, aud as the ehannel between the islands is closed, the extent of their feeding greuud is re stricted, aud they become a mere easy prey te the marksmen. Jehn P. Staman, E. II. Stamanaud Peer Director Hershcy, all of Columbia, visited Washington en Tuesday. A number of tobacco growers have fin ished stripping aud are ready te show their crops te the buyers, as seen as they cheese te come along. Painful Accident. On Monday evening as Mathias Henry, aged 02 years, residing ou Jehn street, was walking in the rear of his premises, car rying a child en his arm, he slipped en the ice and fell, dislocating his ankle and breaking both bones of his right leg. Dr. Geerge A. Kiug reduced the fractures and dislocation and the unfortunate man is do ing as well as possible under the circum stances. Ore Mines te be Reopened. The old ere mines near Beartown, Lan caster county, belonging te the E. & G. Breeke manufacturing company, of Birds Birds Birds bere, will be reopened aud put into full operation in a very few days. Machinists are new at work erecting a new engine en the grounds, and operations will commence as seen as they get through. A Dunkard Sleeting Heme Robbed. Helder's meeting house, near Ephrata, was robbed of a let of bedding by unknown thieves who subsequently carried their plunder te the building kuewn as " the Retreat," en the Springs ground. A number of spreads and blankets were re covered. The thieves escaped. - Dr. Buchanan. "Dr." Jehn Buchanan was yesterday acquitted in the United States court at Philadelphia upon the charge of fraudu lently using the mails. Wm. A. Bensen, of Philadelphia, was elected president and the ether customary officers were appointed. The twenty-nine votes of the college were then cast for James A. Garfield for president of the United States and Chester A. Arthur for vice 'president. Jehn L. Lansom, of Philadelphia, was selected te carry the re sult te Washington. New Yerk Vetes fcr Uarneld. Albany, X. Y., Dec. 1. The electoral college reassembled in the Assembly chamber, new capitol, this morning at ten o'clock. Agucw was again chosen and again took the oath of office. The college proceeded te vote for president and vice president of the United States, the en tire vote being cast for James A. Batchelder, of Arling ten, as secretary, and cast the unanimous vote of five for James A. Garfield for pres ident and Chester A. Arthur for vice pres ident. David II. The electoral college of Maryland met te-day at eleven o'clock. I. Nevitt Steele, of Baltimore, was elected president and Eugene Higgins, of Baltimore, secretary. The Cowardly Crime of w New Yerk J.eafcr New Yerk, Dec. 1. Early this morn ing, Mortimer P. Sullivan, aged 21, en gaged in a fight with an idle fel low known by the nickname of "Sass," in the liquor store of James Jenes, Ne. 33 Baxter street. " Sass" drew a pistol and shot Sullivan down in his tracks when his back was turned. The bullet penetrated his back and is probably ledged in his lungs. Sas3 ran away and is supposed te be hiding in the slums of the Five Points where the pelice are look leok loek ngfor him. The wounded man was taken e the hospital. DEATH ON THE BAIL.
