ajTf' LANCASTER DAILY 1OTJ JJJGBNrKH. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 30 1880. I': i -Uncaster Iiitelltgencer. TUESDAY EVENING. MOV. 30, 1880. Tlie Hebrew Acrostic Philadelphia Recerd. The acrostic poem is far from being a modern conceit. Hebrew poetry abounds in tbe acrostic or alphabetical arrange ment te such an extent that se eminent a biblical critic as Bishop Lowth considered this feiin as one of the leading character istics of the Hebrew muse. This, how ever, is an exaggeration. The acrostic or alphabetical poem as found in the Hebrew Scriptures consists of twenty-two lines, hystems of lines, periods or stanzas, cor responding with the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet, and every line or system of lines begins with each letter in its order as it stands in the alphabet. Thus the first line or stanza begins with aleph, the second with leth, and se en. This, as Bishop Lowth ob serves, was indubitably intended for the assistance of the memory, and was chiefly employed in such subjects of common use as maxims of morality and forms of devo tion, which, being expressed in detached sentences or aphorisms, the form employed liv the most ancient sazes in delivering their instructions, were net easy te be re membered unless by the aid of some such device. By this artificial contrivance a helpful catchword was supplied for every line or couplet or triplet of lines, and the difficulty arising from the want of connection in the parts and of a regular train of thought carried through the whole was thus admirably overcome. There arc still extant in the books of the Old Testament twelve of these poems the 23tli. 34th, 37th, 111th, 112th, 119th and 143th Psalms ; Proverbs xxxi,10-31,and the first four chapters of Lamentations. Three of these the 11th and 112th Psalms and the third chapter of Lamentations arc per fectly alphabetical, every line being mark ed by its initial letter. The ether nine aic less completely alphabet ical, every stanza or group of lines only being se distinguished. Of the thice former it is te be remarked that net only is each single line marked by its ini tial letter, but that the whole poem is di vided into stanzas ; two of these poems each into ten stanzas, all of which are coin cein coin Tilete excent the two last iu each, which arc of three lines, and iu them both the sense and the construction manifestly point the divinieu of the stanzas and mark their limit. The third and most remarkable of thec alphabetical poems. Lamentations iii.,consists'ef twenty-two stanzas of three lines, but in this the initial letter of each stanza is also the initial letter of every line of that .stanza. And in all the three poems the pauses of the sen tences coincide with the pauses of the lines and stanzas. It is further te be observed that the lines se determined by the initial iu the Kinie poem are- notably equal in length, in the number of words nearly, and probably iu the number of syllables, and that the lines of each stanza have a rcmaikable cengmity one with another in matter as well as form. Of course these beauties of method have net been traus fencd into the English and ether modern versions of the Old Testament, nor are they te be perceived in the Scptaugint or ancient Greek tendering, but must be sought in the original Hebrew text. E. siayinaKer, Agent ier ucigari's uni Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively used the Brandy referred te in his regular practice. It is commended te the attention of these, af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine ei great potency in me en i e of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousand of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe cially these alllictcd with that miserable ili ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which (3 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or less debility, will nnit tins simple medicine, when nsed properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their Ills anil aches. Be it, hewevei strictly understood that we prescribe ami u-e but one article, and that is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, H E SLAYMAKEU. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and lias never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies, nemattcr with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various Impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. Iu proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon num bers of witnesses one case in particular we cite A hard-working farmer had been affiictcd with an exhaustive Dyspepsia for a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly no appetite In fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGnmn's Beet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, S reached at times, anil in his discourses often cclalined earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advisedte try Relgart'8 Old Brandy, In his case, lie looked up with astonishment, but after hearing et its wonderful effects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was token he was a sound man.with a stomach capable of digesting anything which hejehese te eat. He still keeps it ami uses a lit tle occasienally: and since lie lias this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A Practising Physician. H. .
