One of the first requisitions received
from a newly-appointed railway station
agent was ; " Send me a gallon of red oil
for the danger lau terns."
- Temmy (whose mamma bad been read
ing te him about Eve and the serpent) :
" She wasn't like you, mamma, for you're
afraid of a mouse."
" I believe in bananas in the abstract,
but net in the concrete," said an old gen
tleman, as he painfully arose from the as.
phalt walk.
"If I punish you," said a mamma te
her little girl, ''you don't suppose I de se
for my pleasure, de you ?" Then whose
pleasure is it for, mamma '.'"
"Yeu are an idiot !" angrily exclaimed
a domineering wiCag "Se my friends said
when I married yen?' replied the husband.
And she became mere infuriated than
ever.
" Yeu ought te travel for your health."
"But I have neither the money nor the in
clination." "I'll tell you what te de
steal $10,000, and then you will have both
the inclination and the means te travel !"
TweKcutuckians had been stepping at
a Chicago hotel. One of them was fiercely
disputing the correctness of the bill which
the clerk had just presented te him. when
the ether took him by the arm and said.
"Colonel, never forget that you area Keu
tuckiau. Kill the clerk, but pay the bill."
The German papers teli this story iu
connection with Baren Rothschild's death :
A meets B. weeping and sobbing aloud.
Says A. " Why de you weep?" " Be
cause," says B, as if his heart were break
ing, " because he is dead the pewerful1
and rich baron." " But,' replied A, why
de you cry se much ; he was no relation of
yours ?" "That's just what I am crying
about," howled B, meie affected than
ever.
If any one were te say that the famous
picture of Colonel Mulbery Sellers placing
a candle inside an empty stove counterfeit
a cheerful lire, was net original with
Mark Twain he would doubtless be scoffed
at. Nevertheless, if any one will turn te
the memories of Saint Simen, he will find
that this ingenious device was invented
about two hundred and fifty years age by
the Prince of Leen and his wife, at Bruy
crcs. "One winter's day." wc are told,
"the weed gave out, yet at night the
stove shone as brightly as ever. The
Chevalier dc Konau, who was acquainted
with the state of the weed pile, was sur
prised, approached the lire, felt the stove
and found it icy cold a lamp placed in
side made it glow."

At the Komau Cemiquc some fifty years

But just before the balcony .scene, the

A mother's tact hit upon the ti tie seething

and from that moment the young villian
became silent as a mouse Being called,
she hasl ily mounted the rostrum that sup
