Yesterday was one of the most disagree able days that Columbia has teen in a long time. The pavements from morning uutil night and even te this morning were cover ed with a coat of sleet that made walking hazardous and even dangerous, and as a consequence many people walked iu the middle of the .-.treet in preference te risking life and limb by keeping te the side walks. The congregations of the different churches were slim. At the Presbyterian church, when the evening services were ever, a couple of ladies of the congrega tion fell before making a dozen steps from t he church doers, and it is said one of them was severely injured. Ceal ashes, saw dust, sand, etc., have been sprinkled en a geed many el the pavements and the walk ing is new much better than it has been, although iu some places it is yet very bad. Oue or two connections arc yet te be made and then the improvements which have been going (n in the locality for a number of mouths will be completed and the track between the stations mentioned almost a straight line. The Examiner reporter just told us that he wrote a poem the ether day ( he often does) which he had published. When placed in the hands of the type-setters it read- " She kissed me under the silent stars," and when they were through ma nipulating it, it read "She kicked me under the cellar stairs."' He will conduct the music of the Adams county institute this week. Iter. Dr. Knight, of St. James. Yesterday, first Sunday in Advent, was the third anniversary of the rectership of Rev. Dr. Knight at St. James church, thin city, and his sermon in tbe morning was appropriate te the event of which the occa sion was the commemoration. The rector recalled with satisfaction tbe alterations in the church building, notably these which relieved the deficiences pointed out in these words : " When I came tbe deep and awkward and inconvenient side gal leries remained, interfering with light and sound and free air, and almost wholly un occupied. The vestry was in a ruinous condition, with a rent through which one could see the stars, stretching between iti and the main body of the church. In tbe western gallery steed an organ which had seemingly far outlived its usefulness (though thanks te the thoughtful gener osity of a parishener and te the efforts of our brethren at St. Johh's it has new re newed its youth and does geed service at that church), while the west front rose in unredeemed aud irredeemable ugliness." The expense of the alterations rendered necessary by these deficiencies was referred te and the hope expressed that the Eas ter season would extinguish all remain ing debt. The gifts of the parish for re ligious purposes during the last three years amount te a little mere than 824,000. This includes a little less than one-third the cost of the new organ. Kenerring te the changes in the manner of celebrating divine service Dr. Knigbt said : " It is very desirable for many rea sons that the congregation should join heartily in siucinir the hymns and canti cles, aud I think you will bear me witness that three years age, singing, excepting in the choir gallery, was a thing almost un known here. There was almost no sing ing, as there was little audible response en the part of the people, aud I called your at tention te this at once en coming here. New experience has always proved that te put the organ and leaders of the singing before the people is a great help in drawing them te take their share iu this part of the wor ship. And se it has been here. Ourhyraus are new rendered for the most part both by choir aud people heartily and with spirit. The choir having their place in the chan cel, it was seemly and fitting that they should conic in and withdraw in an order ly way, that is te say, in precession, and that they should wear a uuiferra dies?, thus covering up anything in their garb which might draw the eye or distract the thought of the worshipers. And as there is a garb which has been worn from the earliest ages by the leaders of devo tion iu the Christian church (which indeed had- before been worn for many centuries through command of Ged himself by the Levitcs in the Jewish church), which has been worn from time immemorial in all cathedral and collegiate aud iu hundreds of parish churches in England, aud introduced into a great num ber of our churches iu this laud, we adopt ed that dress. Te quicken the devotion of the people and recall wandering thoughts, a hymn is sung as clergy and choir enter the church, and te bring the service te a solemn close when they go out. In accord ance with a very ancient aud almost uni versal custom in all branches of the Cath olic church, and in order that we may express our unity by all, clergy and choir ami people, standing in one way, we turn te the East when we say the creed. I tunic I have spoken new of all the points in which our service differ from that of ether parishes near us, and it will be seen by any one who will take the trouble te examine the matter, ever se slightly, that our ways are simply the ancient, orderly, edifying customs which we have inherited from our mother Church of England. As for their being c-jpicd from the Church of Rome or indi cating any tendencies in that direction, I am sure the suggestion of such ignorance or thoughtlessness is best met and an swered by a geed-natured smile. If auy of you, my people, shall join the Church of Reme, which I de net at all fear, it will net be in consequence of the ordering of our service or for want of teaching from your pastor." The practice of surplicing the choir, Dr. Knight said, is rapidly growing in favor. He had also availed himself of the right, affirmed by the general convcutien, of say ing the three offices of Morning Prayer, Litany and Hely Communion separately. He was clad te knew that whatever changes had been made under his rector recter ship were made without alienating one sin gle person, old or young, high or low, in the parish ; aud se far as he can learn net one person desires te go back te the former usages. He regretted that se few availed themselves of the high privileges offered by the establishment of the weekly and holy day celebration of the Eucharist; Dr. Knight enjoined upon his parishion ers that "every person here who really de sires te honor Ged and te gain something for his own soul would make it a rule net te speak one word within these walls be fore or after service." 'There will be time enough te talk when you have get beyond the deer. But you will net take it amiss if I w.mi you even then te be careful hew you speak of the service or the sermon. Whatever defects there may be in cither. try te forget them and te remember that the clergy are the ministers of Jesus Christ aud, whatever may be their faults or fail ings, that they speak herein His name and by His authority." The rector acknowledged valuable aid and assistance received in his labors from Ecv. Mulhelland, master of Ycates insti tute ; and from the vestry and church committees. The establishment of free sittings: the increase in the Sunday schools and their libraries ; the prespact of further Sunday school building; tbe geed work of the parish guild ; the onward cause of the orphanage and Bewman church home, were ether subjects en which the rector felicitated himself and his congrega tion. Iu the way of statistics he noted that " in the three years past I have baptized 1G1 infants and 43 adults, in all 204. Seventy-eight persons have been confirmed. There arc new at least 280 regular commu nicants. I have buried sixty-one persons here." The timely and excellent discourse closed with a touching and eloquent reference te the late Mrs. Jehn L. Atlee. SUICIDE. Following BI Brether in Seif-Detractien. Mr. Gee. England committed suicide en Saturday at his residence, nearGatchelviIle, Yerk county, whither he removed a few years age from Drumore township, this county, near Fairfield. He leaves a wife and four small children, who were visiting Fairfield at the time of bis death. Mr. England's brother committed suicide a few years age in Chester county. Cleopatra's Needle. Chas H. Barr, of this city, is tbe happy possessor of a chin from the crrcat mono lith known as Cleepatia's needle brought from Egypt and new in course of erection in Central park New Yerk, and also a small fragment of white stone in the base of tbe needle en which the Masonic em blems were found. Mr. Barr obtained these relics from one of the park guards who received them from the stone-cutters who arc preparing the monolith for crcc-tien. The general improvement in business tbe past year, with tbe prospect et a very large in creased demand for all kinds of Dress Goods, induced all American buyers of Foreign Goods te place immense orders.
