LANCASTER DAILY IKTELLIGENCEK. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 16, 1880.
Lancaster I-ntdltgrttcev.
TUESDAY EVENING, NOV. 16, 1880.
THE LCCKY HORSESHOE.
A fanner traveling with bis lead
Picked up a horsebbee In the read.
And nailed It fast te bis barn deer.
That Luck might down upon bltu pour,
Tbat every blessing known In life
Might crown bis homestead and bl3 wife.
And never any kind of harm
Descend upon his growing farm.
But dire Ul-lertuuc seen began
Te visit the astounded man.
His hens, declined te lay tbelr eggs ;
His bacon tumbled lrein the pegs.
And rats iloveui cd the fallen legs ;
His corn, tbat never failed before.
Mildewed and retted en the fleer ;
His grass refused te end in bay ;
His eattlc died, or went astray ;
In sheit, all moved the crooked way.
Kelt spring a great thought baked the f-ed.
And rousted every put In pod ;
The beans declared they could net giew
Se long as nature acted se ;
Redundant injects reared their breed
Te starve ler luck of juicy feed ;
The staves from bun el sides went off
As if tbey had the hoeping-cough.
Ami nothing et the useful kind
Te bold together felt Inclined ;
lit short, it was no use te try
While all the land was in a fry.
One mei n, demoralized with scricf,
The fanner clamored for relief;
And prayed right hard te um!crlaud
What witchcraft new possessed his land ;
Why beuse and larm in misery grew
Since he nailed up that "lucky" shoe.
While tIiti- tllimayed o'er matters wieng
An old man chanced te trudge along,
Te whom he told, with wormwood teai.-'.
Hew bis affairs were In arrears,
And what a desperate slate ei things
A picked-up hoec-shoe sometimes biing.
The stranger aked te see the shoe,
The farmer brought it into View ;
Kut when the old man raised his head,
He laughed outright, and quickly said,
"Xe wonder skies upon you frown
You've nailed the horseshoe upside down !
Just turn it round, and seen you'll see
Hew you and fortune will agree."
The farmer turned the horseshoe round,
And showers begun te swell the ground ;
The sunshine laughed among his giain.
And heaps en hcajis piled up the wain ;
The left his buy could baiely bold,
Ills cattle did as they were leld ;
His fruit trees needed sturdy preps
Te bold the gathering apple crops ;
His turnip and potato fields
Astonished all men by their yields ;
Felks never saw such ears of corn
As In his stalling hills were born ;
His barn was full of bursting bins ;
His wife presented him with twins :
His neighbors marveled mere and meie
Te see the incicase in bis store.
Anil new the merry farmer sings
'There are two was of doing thing ;
And when ler geed luck you would pray, ,
Nail up your horseshoe the right way."
