A LETTEll.
I've just read In the Timet of this morning,
dear Sue,
It is awlully shocking, absurd !
That a new style of kissing is coming ill use
Has the like of it ever been heard ."
1 shall no er, no never, give up the old way,
It is cruel te ask it indeed,
And it made me most cry when I read it, dear
Sue;
"Twill make many a maiden's heart bleed.
And I'll tell dearest Ed, when 1 see tiiin again,
That the old way Is sweetest of all ;
The way Adam kissed Eve in the garden ; the
way
We've been kissing en down from tlie fail.
Bui the scientists tell us the ancients nc"cr
kissed,
IJut they're sinely mistaken, dear Sue;
Fer the girls . euld have pined, like the rose
bud, away,
Thai lias never been bathed with the dew,
U'c must never consent te a ncw-ianglcd plan.
With the old maimer bursting with bliss;
.We must frown dfwi-n the tyrant, the demon,
who dares
Te approach with a patented kiss.
U they alter the old way they will spoil it, I'm
sure, ,
They will make it a nuisance, a fraud.
And our faces against it shall never be turned.
Shall they . Your affectionate Maud,
W.KM.
Indian Ethnology.
TI:e Right Investigating Parties el Majer
Powell.
Omaha, Neb., Republican.
Among the Union Pacific passengers
bound for the Pacific coast Monday was
the explorer, Majer J. AV. Powell, of
Washington, chief of the bureau of eth
nology. 3Iajer Powell has eight parties in
the field engaged in making a study of the
North American Indians their condition,
their habits of life, their languages,
their history, &c, as well as taking a
census .of them. These parties, who are
roughing it with tents, mule-tcams, &c,
are scattered throughout California, Ne
vada, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, and
Majer Powell is going te visit them all te
ascertain personally hew they are progress
ing with their work ; he will probably be
absent about two months. The taking of
the Indian census was begun Oct. 1, and
will probably net lib finished until next
spring, owing te the scattered locations of
the various tribes. The name of every
Indian is written out in full, together with
age, sex, &c, and ether statistics are ob
tained, just the same as of the civilized
citizens of the United States, se
far as practicable. Besides these eight
ethnological parties who arc doing
this work, tliore are spceial agents
of the census bureau who are assist
ing with the various Indian agents. It is
estimated that the total number of Indians
in the United States will feet up ever 300,
000. One of Majer Powell's parties has
just discovered in New Mexico and Arizo
na a number of old ruins and pueblos,
which means old Indian villages. These
are new being carefully explored. In New
Mexico they have discovered, west of Santa
Fc, the largest collections of ruins ever
found en this continent. Majer Powell
had just received a dispatch concerning it,
and stated that the Republican would be
the first newspaper te make the announce
ment. Majer Powell, who has gained a
national reputation, began his explorations
under the auspices of the Smithsonian in
stitution in 18G0, and has been in-thc cm
ploy of the government ever since.
