Packing Fruit for L'eHveyaHec
The various packages of specimens which
we receive from a distance, show the de
fects of imperfect packing en one hand,
and the perfection te which it may he car
ried en the ether. The essential requisite
for successful convey ancc is te have the
fruit incased se tight in the box that no
shaking or jarring will cause it te rattle.
A box of grapes was sent us ; the hunches
had been neatly placed in it, and some
unoccupied space left in the box above the
fruit. In a few hundred miles transit it
had been shaken or turned ever perhaps a
thousand times, or at least often enough
te reduce all the grapes into a shapeless
mass of pulp. If a number of bunches or
specimens are sent, each should be wrap--mmI
separately with cotton or ether suit-,
able material, se that every jar and motion
will carry fruit and packing all together.
We received lately a small box of grapes,
The bunches had been placed in the bot
tom, and the space in the box completely
filled with newspaper. Here the packing
and fruit were separate, and the berries
were all mere or less beaten aim in.ureu.
If the bunches had been encased inside
the packing, no trouble would have occur
red. In another instance, the value of
geed packing was shown en the receipt of
a few specimens of peaches from a distance
of a thousand miles. Each peach was first
wrapped iu a few thicknesses of soft
paper; then with cotton half an inch
thick; this again with paper, and the
whole placed in a box with a compact lin
ing of paper, half an inch or mere thick en
each side. The fiuit had doubtless had
many tumbles in the mail bags, but it
came without any injury whatever.
Seft fruit will of course fare worse than
hard, but the latter may be easily spoiled
in packages of much size. Au instance
a half barrel of IJartlett pears were well
put up, the pressure of the head holding
all firmly together. Hut a single mistake
spoiled the whole; the packer placed a
handsome but soft pear among the rest in
Hllinfr and this seen srivinir wav en
tlie journey, and becoming a shapeless
mass, left a vacancy in the barrel, loosen
ing the rest and causing all te rattle,
bruise and spoil. There arc some skilful
cultivators of fruit from whom we occa
sionally receive specimens, which, through
geed peeking, always come in perfect con
dition. In this connection, the premiums efi'ered
this year for the best packed boxes of fruit
at Covent Garden, Londen, are worthy of
mention. The competing specimens were
te be delivered from a distance net less
than twenty miles. In this country of long
distances this should be greatly extended.
The first prize was awarded for a box of
grapes, the box being lined with soft, dry
mess at the bottom, covered with a sheet of
tissue paper; en this the grapes, which
weighed 18 pounds, were placed. The
sides were similarly treated. Twe and a
half dozen peaches were packed iu a shal
low box, the fruit first wrapped separately
iu paper, and then packed firmly with wad
ding. Slrawberi ics were paeked in mul
berry leaves, a mode adopted by all the
competitors. In the package of grapes
which received the second prize, they
wen: tied te the sides of the box, with
tissue paper and a layer of wadding be
neath ; but it strikes us this treatment
would net be a guaid against the tumb
ling ever which occurs en railroads. The
second prize peaches were firmly packed
in wadding only. We obtain this inform
ation from the Oitrdai. If prizes were
offered in this country at our fairs for the
best, specimens of packing extra line fruit
for market, it would unquestionably be
the means of effecting important improve
ments, and such exhibitions would be ex
amined with great interest by fiuit grow grew

In attempting the improvement of our
land by green manuring, we need te knew
at what stage of growth the plants should
be plowed down, for there is a stage of
growth when they held the greatest quan
tity of organic matter beneficial te future
vegetation, and also hew deep it is te be
buried in the soil, with ether attendant
queries. The question also .sometimes
arises hew plowing down only that which
grows en the soil enriches it. We increase
the capacity of a soil for production, fre
quently, by incicly changing the combina
tion, or locality in the ground, of essential
elements. The plant obtains some of its
constituent elements from the air as well
as from the soil; a poitien also is drawn
from the subsoil. These elements form
compounds, some of which arc found in
the sap, while ethers arc found in the
leaves and ether parts. Seme of these
compounds are known te contain nitrogen,
which is a promoting agent of decay. The
decomposition of one constituent induces
ether elements te leave their places and
form new combinations. Thus matter
gees through the process we term decay,
which, iu reality, is only change. This
decay, or change, takes place much mere
rapidly with green vegetation than with
that which has ripened. If green vegeta
tion is allowed te fall and decay in the
open air, very much of it is lest te the soil
in which it grew, having passed oft" iu the
air ; but if the green vegetable matter be
covered in the soil then, then the absorb abserb
tive capacity of the soil is such that it
holds thc.-c elements, changing it te that
extent. The deeper vcgelable matter is
buried the slower the precess of decay.
We thus save te our soil a portion of or
ganic plant feed by plowing under green
vegetable matter at the right stage of
growth.
In experience, and a course of many
years observation, I have found that green
manuring plants should be plowed under
previous te coining into blossom, in order
te obtain the largest benefit te the soil. 1
have noticed that some farmers in order te
obtain a large quantity te turn down,
wait till a later stage. May net much of
the difference of opinion of the value of
green manuring arise from this cause? On
valuable land, near ready markets, the
less of a i-casen, or even a single crop,
would often pay for manure and hauling
it from market; still iu such cases there is
much green vegetable matter, refuse,
which might instead of going te the com
post heap, or be left as is tee often the
case, te waste away in the air, be lightly,
covered in the soil, doing much geed.
Even a small growth of some kind of grain,
if sewn very thick, would be a great bene
fit : net se much perhaps, iu the amount
of fertilizing matter it would add te the
soil, as in the change. I knew that here here
abeute wc cannot grew fair potatoes en
sod which has been planted te liecu crops a
few years, but if wc seed it te clever, or
grass for a single year, geed fair potatoes
are produced in quantities. I suppose that
land gels "sick" of the plow and hoe, the
same as one docs of the sameness of break
fast, dinner and supper; at all events, I have
known laud well manured (as times go) fall
off iu yield, while if some different plaut be
grown one season, or a few week's growth
of some grain be turned under, a surpris
ing change is produced. Different soils,
in different localities, vary in the time
