MEETING AT MITHVILLE. A Grand Wliui saii it be Called? Fer some time past there lias been a rumor throughout this peaceful community stating that the largest and grandest Re publican mass meeting would be held at M. H. Miller's store en Thursday, October 14, 1880. About two weeks1 time had becu con sumed for the selection of a pole in honor of tbe great affair, and finally they succeeded in selecting two pieces which they thought by splicing would be a geed emblem for their assumed victory. At last, after great anticipation, the sacred evening arrived as pronounced by the Bengal Republican. And the elite may be summed up mathematically as fol fel lows at the time of the raising of the pole : e-D of the crowd being com posed of women ; 2-9 boys ; 1-9 being col ored men and women, and the remaining 1-9 being composed of the white Caucas ian race of the community. At the hour of C o'clock p. m. a grand hurrah for Garfield, coming from the lips of one solitary Garfield junior, was the signal for the pole te take its proper altitude. After a general exertion and a grand repetition of " He-vecs " the pole was standing once mere en terra-firma. The pole having its vcitfcal position, the spectators could easily see at a glance what it was te represent ; as usual a poplar stick and hickory combined, the end en which the hickeir was attached being set in the ground and the poplar mounting te the zenith. The poplar stick was stripped of its bark, se as te present two distinct ideas. This was unquestionably done for the purpose of representing sectionalism. Te promote the general welfare in the North and te degrade it in the Seuth. But, since this is a natural occurrence for the Repub licans and a fit emblem for the party, wc will say no mere about it. At nine o'clock the nomination of offi cers for the meeting was made, under the presidency of Jehn Strohm, jr. Mr. Bra silia, from the lower cud, was first intro duced and began his speech by saying, "that I sec se many familiar faces and am happy te meet them, &c," and that was about all that fell from his lips of any con sequence whatever. - Harry Strohm, new made his first ap pearance as a speaker, a young pedegeguu from Smithville. Since it was his first break into the political arena wc will pass him by but step one word en one argument. He says : "attending te my school duties a few days age, I heard a fcarfnl noise out en the play ground. Se I looked out of the window, and geed enough here was a large "rooster" crewing for Garfield." Of course we de net wish te take offense at anything that the immortal youth said, but we are all aware that no rooster would raise his eloquent head and articulate in chicken language, " Hurrah for Garfield," since tbe man Garfield is aud was a strong supporter of railroads, aud wc all kuew as well as the Democratic " rooster" knows, that railroads aud poultry arc deadly en emies when closely connected. At this time, by some mismanagement, the long-leokcd-for Gatchcll had net ar rived. They seen succeeded in patching up a team and sent after the man, and came just in time te hear Ames Mylin wicd uphis few fecble remarks. Mylin, as usual began telling his reserved talcs about his travels aud explorations, and after he had finished had left the audience under a bad impression about his jour neys. And after he finished, his party was net benefited cither morally or politi cally. Gatchcll was introduced, last and natu rally told the people that Mylin had stolen his speech, and he did net knew what te say. Well, he began, and at tbe same time some of bin political adherents also began, and when the Raid Gatchcll was done talk ing his spectators were at a less te knew vrhe had done the tneit arguing Gatchcll or his adherents. Yeu are thinking of your clothing for fall ; what it shall be ; hew and where you shall get it. Come and Sue T!s. Come and see us, or drop us a line, saying what yen want, as near as you can. If you are here, you can eee for yourself a great variety of things, try en what you like, and go home with the old clothes in a bundle. That is very easy ; aud uething can be mero satisfactory. Net a. Strange Place. It isn't as if you were going te a strange place. The chances are you've been here before, and knew something of our ways. Perhaps your neighbor has been here ; and has told you it was' a geed place te go te. Perhaps you've only read that w sell a geed many clothes, and say te people who buy them: Bring them back if you don't find them every way te your liking. New this is really why we are net strangers te anybody; because wc deal with everybody as with a neigh bor; and expect him te ceme right back if he has cause of complaint. If ted Don't Come. But, suppose yen don't come. Hew are we going te sell yen just what you want te buy, without your seeing things beforehand ? Try ; write ; say about hew much you want te pay for a business suit, dress suit, overcoat, or whatever you want ; say what your occupation is ; say anything that has' any bearing en what we eugh te send you. It will net take us two minutes te guess what you want ; if we don't suess right, that's our less, net yours. Have Your Own Way '. Perhaps you want your clothing made te your measure. Did you sus pect that we make te mcasure a half million dollars' worth of clothing every year for people we never saw aud never expect te see ? Yeu may be very certain that we have a way of do ing such work witbent much risk of a misfit ; for a misfit, you knew, comes right back te us. We are pretty care ful about making blunders when we've get them all te make geed.
