The broken ban upon the foet-patli He That leads across the upland, o'er whose brews At evening the home-returning cows la long precession used te wander by. A little maiden, with a fawn-like eye, And quick light feet, toward the old farm house Dreve the slew herd, that still would pause te browse Vpen the sweet grass standing aukle-hlgh. New all Is changed ; the bars are always down ; Ne tinkling bells come sounding o'er the hill; Upen the lonely place the sun and stars See nothing but the tall grass thin and brown ; And naught Is heard save that the whip-peer-will Flutes his sad note above the broken bars. A. K. Haven, in Harper' Magazine for No vember. m Balsutg Hair. Syracuse Sunday Times. It was ene of the by-laws of Heartache's Heavenly Hair Raiser that it be used liber ally before retiring, rubbing it well into the scalp. Just before he went te bed that night the man belted the back deer, put the cat in the weed-shed, came in whist ling the "Fatinitza" waltz, danced up te the clock shelf, and pouring out what he supposed te be his hair fertilizer, he mop ped it all ever his scalp and stirred it well in around the roots of the little hedge of hair at the back of his neck. The glue bottle, by an unearthly coinci dence, was nearly the same shape and size as the hair-sap bottle. He went te bed. "Ueerge, said ins wile, turning ner face te the wall, "that stuff you're put ting en your hair smells like a pan of soap grease. "Perhaps I had better go upstairs aud sleep," snarled Geerge. "You're mighty sensitive! Yeu wouldn't expect a man can put stuff en his head that will make his hair grew and have it smell like essence efwintergreen, would you?" They went te sleep mad as Turks. This particular bald-Jicaded man, like a geed many ether bald-headed men, had te get up and build the fires. When he arose next morning the sun peeped in at the window and saw the pillow cling te the back of his head like a great white chig non. At first he did net realize his condi tion ; he thought it must have caught en a pin or ashirt button. It looked ridiculous, and he would threw it back en the bed be fore his wife saw it, se he caught it quickly by ene end and " yanked." J' Oh! Oh! Daruatien te fish-hooks, what's been going en here? Thunder an' lightnin !" and he began te claw at his scalp like a lunatic. His wife sprang up from her couch and begau te sob hysteri cally. "Oh, don't Geerge! What is it? What's the matter?" Geerge was dancing about the room, the pillow new dangling by a few hairs, his scalp covered with something that looked like sheet copper, while the air was redo lent of warlike expletives, as if a diction ary had exploded. With a wemau's in stinct the peer wife took in the situation at a glance, and exclaimed : "It is the glue!" The bald-headed man sat down in a chair aud looked at her a moment in contemptu ous silence, and then uttered the one ex pressive word : "Glue!" New began a scries of processes and ex periments unheard of in the annals of chemistry. "Jane, you must soak it oft' with warm water. I've get te go te Utica te-day." "I can't Geerge," she returned in a guilty tone, " it's waterproof." " Yes, I might have known it ; and I suppose it's lire-proof, tee, ain't it ?" He scratched ever the smooth plating with his finger nails. "Yes he said it was eoeil glue !" re plied she iuneccntly. "Can't you skin it off with your razor, Geerge?" "Don't be a bigger feel than you are, Jane. Get me that coarse file in the wood shed." It may be imagined what followed, and new as the bald-headed mau sits in his office he never removes his hat, for his en tire skull is a howling waste of blistered desert, relieved here aud there by eases of black court-plaster. Timely Advice en Fall Clethes. Yeu are thinking of your clothing for fall ; what it shall be ; hew and where you shall get it. Come and See Us. Come and see us, or drop us a line, saying what you want, as near as you can. If you are here, you can see for yourself a great variety of things, try en what you like, and go home with the old clothes in a bundle That is very easy; and nothing can be mere satisfactory. Net a Strange Place. It isn't as if you were going te a strange place. The chances are you've been here before, and knew something of our ways. Perhaps your neighbor has been here ; and has told you it was a geed place te go te. Perhaps you've only read that we sell a geed many clothes, and say te people who buy them : Bring them back if you don't find them every way te your liking. New this is really why we are net strangers te anybody; because we deal with everybody as with a neigh bor; and expect him te come right back if he has cause of complaint. If you Don't Come. But, suppose you don't come. Hew are wc going te sell you just what you want te buy, without your seeing things beforehand ? Try ; write ; say about hew much you want te pay for a business suit, dress suit, overcoat, or whatever you want ; say what your occupation is ; say anything that has any bearing en what we engh te send you. It will net take us two minutes te guess what you want ; if we don't rucss right, that's our less, net yours. Have Your Own Way ! Perhaps you want your clothing niade te your measure. Did you sus pect that we make te measure a half million dollars' worth of clothing every year for people we ticver saw and never expect te sec ? Yeu may be very certain that we have a way of do ing such workwithent much risk of a misfit ; for a misfit, you knew, comes right back te us. We are pretty care ful about making blunders . when we've get them all te make geed.
