Pruning Dwarf Trees.
A lady correspondent asks : "Will some
one tell me Lew and when te prune dwarf
pear trees 2 if they must be washed at
this time of year, and what te put round
them te make them grew?" We reply
that they can be pruned at any time from
new np te the first of 3Iarch. If any of
the weed is needed for grafting, it can be
stuck two or three inches in the ground
where it will be found te be in geed condi
tion when the grafting season comes round.
Pruning new and until spring reduces
the extent of the tree and foliage and gives
it form ; but pruning or shertcniug-in in
June will produce Iruit spurs for the fol
lowing year. Hew te prune cannot always
be advised. Where the growth of this
year has been rampant, cut back te within
two or three inches of the old weed, and
thin out some of the young weed. Your
own judgment must direct you. as te this,
trees being se different in habit and
growth. Ab te washing the trees, it
ought te be done at once, and scraped also
if they need it. A rich soil is all-sufllcicut
te make your trees grew ; if net rich give
ajjoed top-dressing of manure new, te be
carefully worked-in in the spring.
Mice and Rabbits Gnawing Trees.
Every winter the agricultural journals
contain inquiries as te a remedy te prevent
mice and rabbits gnawing, trees, and wc
have nearly annually answered them. Our
remedy, which we have tried with success,
has proved effectual in every instance in
which it has been properly applied. It is
te bandage the trees with any old cotton
or woolen cloth, or very stiff paper will de.
Fer mice, eight or ten inches high will an
swer ; for rabbits, net lc.s than two feet.
The latter standing upright can reach up
nearly two feet, and as far as they can
reach they will gnaw. The same cloth, if
put away, will last for several years. Of
course the bandaging must be well done
and tied te the trees securely.
Iti gardens, where rabbits are sure te be
found if there are any in the vicinity, a
geed protection is te feed them with cab
bage stalks, or decayed heads of cabbage,
effals of rutabagas, carrots, hay, &c. A
" dead trap,' baited with apple, will also
seen clear a garden ; but, if in a starving
condition, a half dozen rabbits will destroy
lifty young trees in a single night. One
winter they net only injured several young
pear trees for us, but nipped 'eir the ten
der ends of certain shrubs as cleanly as if
done with pruning sheais.
Fall Turning-tip el" Garden Seil.
Professed gaidcncrs well understand the
fall management, of these important little
family farms. It is needless te tell them
hew much the success of next year's crop.-?
depends upon turning up the ground (say
in November) intended for such crops.
But there arc many ethers these who
have small gardens and in this class are
many of our regular well-to-de farmers
who only nii.se half crops of vegetables,
and these of an inferior quality, and
wondered hew it is se. New, we
cannot tee often repeat the advice
that if they will use the garden-fork,
and turn the soil up full fork deep,
allowing it te remain in lumps all winter
exposed te the fres it will put the soil in
excellent condition and tend greatly te
add te the production of next year's crops.
This is especially the case with ground
net se treated frequently, and wc would
mention that every ether year is best, in
stead of every year as some gardeners de.
Gardens, ami especially old ones, should
also be limed about once in five years,
and sailed about every ether spring, ap
plying of lime at the rate of about thirty
bushels te the acre, and of salt from eight
te ten. In applying .salt keep it from com
ing in contact wit.i box-edging and all
ether evergreens, very small trees, &c.
Such a course will bring up your old gar
dens in a surprising manner. Turnips,
radishes, &c, will grew as well as they
ever did, and all ether vegetables be largely
benefitted.
Harvesting and Storing Turnips.
Various methods for harvesting this
crop, which in Pennsylvania is net a very
extensive one, aie new en the taj)is. We
speak of turnips, proper net rutabages.
The last improved method is te harrow
the crop out and lead them with a three
pronged hayfork .' This may be rather ex
peditious and answer well enough where
the turnips are te be fed te the cattle, but
is the worst possible way if they are te be
marketed, as purchasers will net leek at a
cut and bruised article. It will be found,
" we guess,' that the old-fashieucd way
of pulling them out with the hands and
throwing them in heaps, and cutting the
tops off 'with a sharp knife, will prove the
best, after all. It is useless te attempt te
shirk the labor, if the crop is te be har
vested in the best manner aud a geed
price is expected te be obtained for them.
Of all the roots perhaps the turnip is the
most impatient of heat. It starts te grew
en the slightest provocation. In a cellar
of net ever forty degrees, one may find it
growing ficely, after an incarceration of
but a few weeks. It is growth which is
the great enemy of preservation, and it is
heat which excites growth. There is a
natural heat in roots when put in n heap
a little heat from one root aud a little
mere from another seen makes a pretty
high degree: but in the open field
this is carried off by the open air
about the pile. Hence, under cover of
near protection, this natural heat
is net carried oil. It accumulates, the
roots sprout, thus gives off mere heat, and
it all seen becomes a regular turnip stew.
The turnip, indeed, does net mind a little
frost. If they were put in small lets in
stalls, where the frost could get at them,
and covered with straw te prevent rapid
thawing, they would keep belter thau if
covered with earth, which rather serves,
aswc have seen, te collect the heat and
boil the roots.
As te hew best te keep turnips, that will
of course depend en each person's conveni
ences. Hut if each one keeps in view the
fact that heat is meic likely te injure them
than cold and a very low degree at that
he will steadily find out when he leeks
about what is the best way for for him te
preserves them.
