THE LOCAL CAMPAIGN.
A- Rattling Week ter th'e Democracy.
Cel. Jehn W. Ferney and ether speak
ers who arc te be present in Lancaster
county this wedk te shake the country up
politically en behalf of the Democracy,
avrived this aftcrnoeu and have taken a
carriage for Aleuutvillc where one of the
largest meetings of the campaign will be
held this evening te be addrpssed by Cel.
Ferney and ethers. The Columbia and
Marietta clubs will be there and hosts of
earnest Democrats from the surrounding
country. The Hancock Legien and glee
club of this city will go out 100 strong,
.some en horseback, some in carriages, and
omnibuses leaving Centre Square at 5 p.
m. will convey many ether Democrats of
the city who will attend the meeting.
To-meirow a grand mass meeting will
be held during the afternoon at Quarry
ville, te b2 addressed by Cel. Ferney, Mr.
Kingwalt, Cel. Douglas, Cel. Ritchie and
ethers. A special train will run from this
city at 9:-i5 a. m. The members of Han
cock Legien and invited guests will assem
ble at Democratic headquarters te-morrow
morning at 0 o'clock for the purpose of es
corting Cel. J. W. Ferney and ether
speakers te Quarryville. Tne members arc
requested te wear dark clothes and white
hats. Many citizens will accompany the
excursion and the turnout all along the
line of the Quarryville railroad and from
all the districts of the lower end is expect
ed te be unusually large.
In the evening a special train, leaving
Quarryville at 7 p. m. and returning from
this-city after midnight, will bring the ex
cursionists back te the meeting in Fulton
hall and the folk's from the country who
want, te hear the news from Indiana and
Ohie.
The Democratic meeting in the hall to te
morrow evening premises te be an im
mense affair, and the attendance from the
city and country will be very general, the
liveliest interest being manifested te hear
Cel. Ferney.
The .speakers and visitors from Quarry
ville will be back in geed time te begin
the meeting at 8:13, p. m. Gee. Nauman,
esq., will preside at the meeting aud the
election returns will be announced as ra
pidly as received in this city.
On Wednesday afternoon aud evening
there will be a grand demonstration of the
Democracy in the eastern cud of
the county at Xew Helland. Cel. Ferney
aud ether distinguished speakers will be
there, and the meeting premises te be the
largest ever held in that section. Many
persons from Lancaster will attend it.
On Wednesday evening Cel. Ferney will
speak at Maiihcim.
Oit Thiusday evening there will be a
general meeting of the Democrats at Jehn
F. Eclitcniaclit's Millport hotel, en the
Strasburg turnpike, two miles cast of this
eit-. All of the Lancaster clubs arc in
vited te attend it, and several companies
of the Kighth ward club, the Ninth,
Seventh and Sixth ward clubs, and prob
ably ethers, as a whole or in part, will
march out and paiticipatc in the demon
stration. On Friday night there will be a Demo
cratic meeting at the Lititz Springs hotel,
another at Uewmansvillc, aud one in
Washington boieugh ; en Saturday in
Sli-usbiirg. Maytown and McCall's Ferry.

made by Ce!. 11. McMellcn, of the Repub
lican club, against Officers Harm an and
Kautz, for neglect of duty en the occasion
of the Republican parade en Friday night.
The following testimony was taken.
,T. X. Geedman, sworn : On Fiiday
night en the occasion of the Republican
precession the policeman who had held of
me had a slouch hat; can't say it was
Kautz: the policeman caught held of my
aim: will net say that he caught held of
me for the purpose of holding me. 1 posi
tively deny snyh'g that Mr. Kautz handed
his b'lak-ja'ek te anyone, never said any
thing of the kind.
E. II. S'uaub, sworn : Was standing at
hotel in front of Aekennan's place, West
King street ; asked Harmau aud Kautz te
arrest a man, and they gave me no satis
faction; I said I would appear against
them if they did net: in less than 13 sec
onds I saw a horseman strike Harmau ever
the head with a whip. The etliccrs had
their backs te the crowd and faces to
wards the marching men ; the name of
the horseman who struck Harman was
Frantz ; don't knew his first name ; the
efiicer gave no provocation, but I think he
was net doing his duty ; can't say I saw
the etliccrs taking any part iu the assault
en Geedman ; saw no officer strike a blew.
Geerge W. Metzgcr swern: Was iu
Yeung Men' club, Ce.C,; Geedman steed
by with cane in hand, waited till we came
up and told the crowd te stand back;
when the rank in which I was came up the
rowdies tumbled into us ; the officers came
up Kautz and Harmau Harman took
held of Geedman while ether men struck
him ; it looked te me as though Harman
was taking part with the crowd; it get
pictiy het at that time and I get down
sticct further. After the trouble had
cooled down. 1 heard men ask Kautz why
he did net arrest these who were urging
the light, and he only laughed at them.
Peter Elias, swern: When we were
coining up Maner street, near Derwart,
we were attacked. I caught a boy who
was throwing stones, kept him and intend
ed te hand him ever te an officer as seen
as I could set; one ; told Kautz the boy
had been throwing stones and told him
te lock him up, that I had seen him throw
ing stones; don't think Kautz saw him
throwing stones ; he was coming up from
towards hose house ; Kautz caught held of
Jacob Butt and pulled him out of the
crowd.
Wm. Metzgcr swern: Was cemiug up
Maner street with company C. Jesse 2fye
had a flag in his hand with Hancock's
likeness en : he shook it at us and said see
there you b. s. of b. I then saw Geedman
trying te keep the crowd back, I walked
the alley te Strawbciry street ; came back,
saw Geedman and Harmcn talking ; stones
weic bcinji thrown, a torch was thrown
at Geedman and was struck ever the back
with a torch ; cant say who used it, but
think it was Harman ; I knew Harman
when I see him ; I saw no ether blows
struck ; I ran as far as Mulberry street ;
came back and saw Kautz and Harman ;
a man en horseback they said it was Toin Tein Toin
liusen, he told-Kautz te arrest some one ;
don't knew who it was ; don't knew that
Kautz saw the man ; he made no effort te
arrest any one.
Jehn Wisegarver, sworn : In front of
the old Humane heuc I was one of the
crowd who asked Iluriuan te arrest a young
man who had tin own a stone ; he told us
te pnss en, never mind ; lie also told Shertz
te go aud get a warrant for his arrest, as
he could net arrest him without a warrant.
The crowd en the pavement wanted him te
arrc.-t Shcrts ; he said he could net de it :
the Tiv.d en the pavement turned en him.
The dt fer.dants were net present at the

Tuc property committee" reported having
placed insurance policies for 2,500 iu the
Phoenix insurance company, of Londen,
and 82,500 in the Commonwealth insur
ance company, in place of policies expiring
Oct. 1. Eight thousand dollars worth of
insurance expires within the next sixty
days. The committee decided net te rent
the opera house for political meetings
when a parade is given iu connection with
the meeting en account of the damage
that might arise te the interior of the
buildings. The committee fuithcr repoit repeit
cd the necessity of repainting certain por
tions of the market and opera houses.
The read committee reported having
contracted with II. E. Wolfe te furnish
biekcn stone, delivered en streets where
needed for macadamizing purposes, at
$1.23 per perch ; also a contract with Jehn
Fisher for the delivery of stone for the
same purposes at 83 cents and GO cents per
perch ; the macadamizing and repairiug
of several streets and the intention of ma
cadamizing ethers.
The market committee made a repeit
which is embraced in the report of the fi
nance committee.
The chief of the fire department report
ed having grauted permission te the Vigi
laut and Shawnee lire companies te take
their engines te Hagerstewu, Md., en the
20th of October, the Shawnee engine te be
substituted here by one employed.
The following resolutieu was adopted
by a close vote after a debate in which
several members took part : " Ecselccd.
That in accordance with an eidiuancc
enacted January 10, 1874. ordaining 'that
Maner street shall be laid out, opened and
graded between Ninth and Twelfth
streets,' the read committee be and are
hereby instructed te complete the opening
aud grading of Maner street between the
streets named in the ordinance ; Provided,
That the prepositions made by Mr. J. C.
Steuer relating te the opening of Maner
street shall be reduced te a written agree
ment aud approved by the solicitor of the
borough."
A communication was read from the
Vigilant fire company inviting the membeis
of council te participate in the parade at
Hagerstown, Md., ou October 20. The
same was received with a vote of thanks
and ordered te be placed en the minutes.
The property committee was instucted

In our communication of Saturday we
inadverteaty; emitted the name of Dr. J.
K. Lineaweaver, who was elected surgeon
of the II. M. North Democratic marching
battalion.
The Juvenile Democrats en Saturday
afternoon received their x equipments con
sisting of a torch red cap aud a red cape.
The equipments of the II. M. North
marching club of the 3d ward have arrived
aud will be delivered te the members of
the club te-day. They are of the regula
tion patterns.
The special train te Meimivil'e this
evening, te give te the Democrats of -Marietta
and Columbia an opportunity te
participate iu the parade te be there given,
will leave here at seven o'clock, and will
return immediately after the exercises
of the evening have been completed. It is
thought that at least two hundred of the
Democratic battalion of Columbia will
take part.
The sacrament of the Lord's Supper was
administered in the E. E. Lutheran church
yesterday morning and evening. Iu the
afternoon eight or ten children were bap
tized. Hereafter meruiug services will be
held at 10:15 o'clock and evening sessions
at 7, in place of 7:30 o'clock as hereto
fore. The Heu. Galusha A. Grew addressed a
large audience in the iutcrestef the-Repub-lican
party party in the pper.a-i.&aWte en
Saturday evening. There was a large
number "of Democrats present.
The Citizens' band mi Saturday evening
serenaded Rev. J. J. Russell, pastor of
St. Peter's Catholic church, whj re
cently returned from Europe. Rev.
Russell was glad te see the band and a
very pleasant evening was spent.
Rebert C. Dean, of Ephrata, Pa., was
yesterday" ou a visit te his home at this
place.
Will Ervin, who has been visitiug his
parents iu Columbia for the past week or
ten days, left here for Philadelphia this
morning. Mr. Ervin is employed iu the
signal department of the Pennsylvania rail
road. The Shawnee rolling mill, beginning
with te-day, will run double turn. Since
resuming operations it has been running
single turns. One mere puddle luruace
has been lighted up, making the total
number new running eleven.

of the city of Baltimore.
A GANC OF TRAMPS.
Tlielr Petty Thieving and Arrest.
Last night G. W. Schreycr s cellar was
broken into and a quantity of canned fruits
were stolen. This morning Mr. Schroyer's
orchard was invaded by a gang of tramps
who stele apples. Mr. Schroyer tele
graphed for police officers, aud a dctatch
nient was sent out te arrest the gang.
After a geed deal of trouble they succeed
ed in lodging fourteen of them hard look
ing cases in the lock-up. Twe ethers es
caped. One of them knocked down Mr.
Stene who resides en Harrisburg avenue,
and another almost tore the sleeve out of
Officer Killinger's coat.
Driving Accident.
Last evening as a party of three young
men, whose names are net given, were
driving en lteckland street, their horse
took fright, upset the wagon te which he
was hitihed, threw the occupants out au.il
ran some distance before helwas stepped,
breaking the top from the wagon, tearing
the curtains,'and otherwise damaging the
vehicle. The men and horse escaped "with
slight injury.

at C o'clock Mr. F. Xeuderf was united
in "the holy bends of wedlock with Miss
Keller, daughter of Mr. Henry Keller, re
siding en Church streat. The knot was
tied in presence of a large company of
friends and acquaintances by Rev. F. P.
Mayscr, pastor of the church, and after
the ceremenv the wedding party returned
te the residence of the bride's father,
where the newly wedded pair held a recep
tion and the guests were royally enter
tained. Among the many elegant tokens
of esteem presented te the happy couple
was a handsome and costly silver pitcher,
th9 gift of the choir of Zion's church, of
which the bride was a member.

Tlieir Visit te Baltimore.
This afternoon Lancaster cemmandery
Ne. 13 Knights Templar, left this city in
the 2:10 tram accompanied by the City
cornet band, te take part in the sesqui
ccntennial ceremonies, at Baltimore, in
eluding a great street parade which will
take place te-morrow. Before taking the
cais the Sir Knights made a short street
parade. They numbered about 100 men,
and as usual presented a very fine appear
ance. At Columbia they will be joined by
a number of ether Knights and at Yerk by
a still larger number. They will return

Chicago, Oct. 11, A gravel train in the
Chicago, Milnaukie & St. Paul railroad,
ran into a dreve of cows near Stillman
Valley, 111., j-esterday afternoon, ditching
ten cars and killing several men. Jehn
Ryan, a section man, was killed outright.
The killed and wounded number 13. Three
of the train hauds arc reported killed.
Many of the wounded were boys living iu
the neighborhood who were having sport
en the train while it was switching.
