The Republican battalion paraded from
450 te 500 men last evening, Colonel Sam
uel Shecli, commanding, beading the line
in his carriage. There were three bands in
the line of precession, the Ironville, Citi
zens' (of this place) and the Columbia
(colored). Captain Ed. B. Eckman's com
pany paraded non-uniformed, their uni
forms, ordered a couple of days since, hav
ing net yet arrived. The headquarters of
the Hancock Inviiiciblcs en Walnut street
were handsomely illuminated, and as the
line passed amid a display of fireworks
the Republicans gave their Democratic
brethren three hearty cheers which were
returned with a will. The route of parade
was a long one and it was close te ten
o'clock when the lice was dismissed at
Odd Fellows hall.
Jacob Teme, the Pert Deposit million
aire, was in town this morning.
Miss Frank Kreudcr, of Ilaverstraw, X.
Y., is visiting in Columbia, the guest of
Miss Mattic Given.
Jehn K. Smith, of Trenten, X. J., an
uncle of E. K. Smith, of this place, is vis
iting the latter.
Jacob Wall, formerly propiicter or the
American house, Columbia, but at present
a resident of Philadelphia, is visiting
friends in town.
The Shawnee fuc company will held
its regular monthly meeting this evening.

Meeting el I lie Homeeopathic Society.
A meeting of the Home'opathic medical
society of Lancaster and Yerk counties
was held yesterday at the ellicc of Dr.
Paylen, of Columbia, and was well at
tended. Reports from the different bureaus
fchewed that malarial fever of a mild type is
prevalent in both counties. After the pres
entation and discussion of a number of in
teresting cases of chrenic: disease, the meet
ing adjourned te convene at Lancaster in
January next.

Jacob Scner, horse dealer, beauliug at
the Franklin house, was taken seriously
ill yesterday afternoon, with congestion of
the brain. This morning he was further
afllictcd with paralysis of the right side,
which renders him entirely helpless, and
fears arc entertained that he may net re
cover. Mr. Sciicr is about 09 years of age
and is very widely known throughout Lan
caster and adjoining counties.

The Democratic congressional conven
tion of the Second district, composed of
delegates from Baltimore, Carrell, Cecil
and Harford counties, Md., met yesterday

was reneminated without opposition.

Yesterday a boy named Pendcgast, re
siding near' West King and .Maner streets,
fell from a grape arbor and sustained a
severe concussion of the brain.

while handling a tible knife, accidentally
cut himself severely i it the arm. Dr. Boyd
attended both the above cases.

The International Match Game.
Cricket Grounds, Philadelphia, Oct.
7. The international cricket game was
resumed this morning "with Smith and
Tycrsat the bat for the English ; Law and
Charles Newhall bowling for the Ameri
cans. Tyers was clean bowled by Law for
eighteen runs. Patterson followed te the
bat and was caught by Law, four wickets
for fifty-nine runs. Jeseph Hargrave
took Patterson's place at the bat.
The English players are all out for 120
in their first innings against 99 for the
Americans in their first innings.
The Americans commenced their second
inning at 1:50 p. m., with Geerge and
Charles Newhall at the bat, Lane bowling
from the upper end and Bremhcad from the
lower. Geerge Newhall was bowled by
Lane for three and Moero took his place.
Charles Newhall was then bowled by
Bremhcad for one, two wickets for four
runs. An adjournment of three-quarters
of an hour for lunch was then taken.

States court, this morning, in the case of
the Pullman palace car company vs. the
Baltimore & Ohie railroad company, the
hearing of a motion for a preliminary in
junction te restrain defendants from an
infringement en the patents of the Pullman
company by building cars for their own?
use, which was set for te-day, was pest
pencd te the 21st of October, and it was
ordered that the defendants file their an
swer and affidavits en or before the Kith
of October. It is understood that Judge
Bend will be present and sit with Judge
Merris at the hearing en the 21st.

an amendment providing that first and
second officers, as well as the captain
of American ships be Americans ; making
a technical change in the clause relative te
the discharge of scamcu in a foreign pert,
and an amendment favoring the employ
ment of apprentices en ships of the United
States,

Theft et Naturalization Papers.
New Yerk. Oct, 7. Police Justice Pat
terson (,Rep,)at the Tombs te-day declined
te grant a warrant for the arrest of the
federal supervisor el elections for taking
and retaining possession en the first day of
the registry of naturalization papers of
1808. A complaint of larceny of the pa
pers was made by Alderman Kirk (Tam
many,)and the justice's declination was en
the ground of want of jurisdiction, the
alderman being directed te apply te a
federal court.

A Plot te Release Prisoners.
Bosten. Oct. 7. A plot te release a
large number of prisoners from the state
prison at Concord, Mass., was discovered
yesterday and frustrated. Seme of the
convicts had obtained possession of false
keys te nearly every deer in one division.
Extra precautions have been taken by
placing new locks and belts en the entire
division.
Policeman Fatally Stabbed.
Atlantic City, N. J., Oct. 7. Jeseph
Price, a police officer, was stabbed in the
side last nisht by Daniel Myers, of this
place, while the latter was drunk. It is
thought that the wound will prove fatal.
Rhede Island Republican Convention.
Providence, R. I., Oct. 7. The Re
publican state convention met in this city
tedav. General Horatio Rogers was
elected president. .Addresses were made
by President Robinson, of Brown univer
sity, and ex-Governer YanZandt. The
congressional convention will be held this
afternoon.

been received in "Washington from a New
Yerk Republican claim agent, who writes
that it is a copy of a circular just received
by him :

Dear Sir The letter of Gen. Han
cock in regard te the payment of claims
leaves no doubt in the minds of these who
knew him that he will sternly carry out his
views as therein announced, and that he
will promptly vctaany nnd all acts looking
te such compensation as may liereatter uc
asked for losses incurred by citizens, of the
states in rebellion by the army of the
United States, and also that he will urge
upon Congress the repeal of any and. all
laws new in force making it possible. :for
Iraimants te procure pay as loyal citizens-.
Prem many of the Southern states and
cfem a great many Democratic members of
Congress have come expressions coincid
ing and fully agreeing te the views express
ed by Gen. Hancock. The position occu
pied by Gen. Garfield upon the subject of
the payment of claims is and
has been much mere favorable to
wards claimants than that assumed
by General Hancock in his letter. Yen
arexited te the fact that General Garfield
was chairman of the committee ou appre
priatiens when the present vice president,
Hen. Wm. A. Wheeler, reported and had
placed upon the army appropriation bill
the act of July 4, under which you and
your clients have received large awards,
and that this measure received the ardent
support of General Garfield in a speech
upon the subject ; also, that General Gar
field strongly urged the extension upon
both occasions when said extension was
made. It is extremely doubtful if the List
extension of such time would have been
made at all had it net been for
the strong appeal made te the Heuse
by him, as you will see by refer
ring te the record when the bill came up
for consideration, Southern claimants un
der the operation of the law creating the
commission, as you are aware, were paid
nearly $5,000,000. It is considered, in the
opinion of the best posted and thoroughly
conversant attorneys here in Washington,
that the interests of both claimants and
attorneys will be better promoted by the
election of Garfield than that of Hancock,
thus continuing the Republican partin
power, as the Republicans have been mere
favorable te the payment of all classes of
claims than the Democrats. Witness
as an example, the conduct of
the war claims committee, Bragg, of
Wisconsin, chairman, at the last session of
Congress. Te accomplish this many of the
attorneys here have contributed liberally,
and they new ask you te aid them all in
your power. Any contribution that you
may see fit te make can be forwarded te
your local correspondent here, with in
structiens as te its disposition, or sent te
Hen. Edward McPherson, secretary Re
publican congressional committee. Please
be prompt and make your response as lib
eral as you possibly can, for the demand is
urgent and the interest te be conserved is
very great.
