workingmen can remember what it was te
have their workshops, their factories and
nine-tenths of their industrial establish
ments closed. De they want the scenes of
the panic of 1873 reproduced ? If they de

It is the fashion of partisian journals te
appeal te the workingman with the most
complete reliance en his stupidity ; but
does net the Press overshoot the mark ?
In 1873 the Republican party was in con
trol of every department of the national
government. Our vaunted tariff was doing
its prettiest for us all. In 1874 the people
tumbled the Republican party out of power.
Since that time business has been en the
mend and the Republican party en the de
cline. But a workingman who can be made
te believe tnat prosperity gees m or out
with cither party roust forget Ged. In
building the foundations of a great country
and influencing its destinies politicians are
arc as pismires. If all the public function
aries in the country were te die te-morrow
we could mend the matter much easier
than we could a short corn crop. The
workingmen, geed neighbor, are beginning
te find out these things, and te vote ac
cordingly. m
Troops Needed.;
Alley Whipped by Hi Teacher for Kef using
te Kins a Possibly Homely Girl.
Iu Barryvillc, Sullivan county, N. Y.,
tbe district school is taught by a young
man named Reuben Frazicr. Geerge Sink,
aged twelve years, was one of his scholars.
Shik is a mischievous boy, and the ether
day he tripped up a girl about his own
age as she was passing out of the school
room deer. He said it was an accident,
but the girl went back and slapped his
lace. He struck her, and the teacher called
him up and llegged him with a stick.
Then he was ordered te beg the girl's par
don and shake hands with her. This the
boy did, The schoolmaster then said that
Shik, te make full amends, must kiss the
girl, but this he refused positively te de.
His refusal brought hiinaiietlier whipping.
Then he was llegged for the third time and
scut home. Believing that the teacher
had no right te insist en their son's kissing
any of the girls that attended school with
him and that he had punished the boy un
justly, the boy's parents had the teacher
arrested en a charge of assault and bat
tery. He was given a hearing by Justice
of the Peace Stidd, who sustained the
teacher's cause and ordered his discharge.
It issaid this case will be carried into the
county courts.
