Mr. W. Emersen Head, of New Yerk,
owns a place called Lakeside- cottage en
the west side of Schroon lake, at which a
friend has been staying daring the sum
mer. Frem this gentleman Mr. Head has
just received a letter telling of the fall of a
remarkable meteoric stone en the night of
the 22d inst, close beside the cottage. The
letter is dated the 23d inst., and the writer
thus describes the fall of the stone :
"Last night I sat here alone writing te
a -relative. The children were all abed.
Hy sister (who is keeping house for me in
the absence of my wife) bad just gene up
stairs for the night. 1 sat at the table in
the kitchen. It was dark out and the clouds
were black and heavy. Yeu could net see
your hand before you. All at once it became
as light as noonday. I jumped te the win
dow, and I could see the barn as plain
as, in the day. I had net time te
draw a breath when the house trembled
from cellar te garret. Ouc I went en the
double quick ; down came my sister fright
ened almost out of her senses. When we
get out of doers there lay a red het sub
stance about twenty-five feet from the
house. I threw kerosene en it and it blazed
up. I threw sulphur en it and it burned
readily. Yeu may be sure I was
astonished I sat up all night watch
ing for mere, but saw nothing else.
When daylight came my sister and I went
te make an inspection. There lay a white
rock, weighing about 125 pounds. It had
indented the ground about six inches. As
it lay I should say it came from the north
east. There were a number of people here
te-day te see it. One man oftered me $25
for it. I told him it was no object, for I
did net expect any mere of the same kind
right away. It is a great thing."

Confiscated Coin.
Hew Sl,250,000 In Celd Get into Circula
tion. It has been recently discovered in the
mint bureau of the treasury department
at Washington, that, after the breaking
out of the lata war, the New Orleans
mint continued coinage for several weeks,
and about 81,250,000 of geld and silver, et
different denominations, was coined from
bullion en hand at the time the war broke
out. This money, it is said, has never
been accounted for officially, as all com
munication ceased when the war began.
The proper entries were made upon the
books of the mint, however, and these
books were net long age shipped te Wash
ington, and, in making certain compari
sons in the office of the director of the
mint, the fact was disceved. There has
inconsequence of this unaccounted for
amount of coin, been in circulation $1,250,
000 in excess of the amounts specified
from time te time. It is supposed that the
money fell into the hands of the confed
eracy, and that all has been put into circulation.
