Mr. D. J. Fallis, president of tlie Mer
chants' national bank of Cincinnati having
stated in an interview with a Commercial
reporter, that if Hancock should be elect
ed president, government bends would net
be worth 90 cents en the dollar. Mr.
Theodere Cook a prominent banker and
manufacturer, chairman of the local Dem
ocratic executive committee, sent Mr. Pal
lis a letter in which he says : " New, Mr.
Fallis, this is a pretty heavy stump speech
te inject into a brief interview en a purely
business matter. If you arc right in what
you say the condition in public affairs is
critical and dangerous. If you arc wrong
you are simply an alarmist, and much mis
chief may come from your statement.
Hancock, I think, will be elected, and in
view of that supposed fact I make you this
offer, viz : Se seen as it is ascertained
that Hancock is elected president I will
buy the 1,000,000 worth of government J
4 per cent, bends held by your bank at
par. I will give such security as will be
satisfactory te your beard of directors te
take and pay for the bends en delivery,
and yen shall give mc satisfactory security
that you will deliver them. That is 10
per cent, mere than you say they will be
worth : and I will give you and your bank
a nice, clear profit of 10,000 en a single
transaction. This proposal is seriously
made, and I await your acceptance of it."
A reporter called en Mr. Fallis te learn
whether or net he intended accepting Mr.
Cook's preposition. He was evidently
very much annoyed, and answered that
what he had said te the Commercial re
porter was merely his individual opinion
and that he had no authority te act for the
bank in the matter.

and has virtually left it. Had General
Grant been nominated at Chicago he would
have exerted himself te secure his election,
but with Garfield's nomination he was dis
gusted from the start, and what has trans
pired since has determined him te discon
nect himself from anj' participation in the
party's conduct, lie will go further than
this in Nevada state politics by opposing
the reelection te the Senate of Sharen ad
supporting Colonel Fair, a Democrat. Just
new Senater Jenes adds: "If asked his
politics he would declare himself mere of
a Grccnbaeker than anything else, but he
anticipates se much bitterness for Repub
licans for his change of views that he shall
net be sttrpi iscd, before the end of the
