A Ureal Apple Jack Crep.
Mere than 75,000 Gallen the Probable
Yield this Vear in Orange County.
This is applejack year in Orange coun
ty N.' Y. The apple crop is large every
ether year. This year the fruit is unusu
ally plenty. Apple jack was first dis
covered it is said, in New Jersey, and Sus
sex county was the great distilling place
of that beverage. But Orange county, N.
Y., long age took ihc palm away fromSus fremSus
scxintuc matter of making apple jack,
and new turns out mere of the liquor than
any county in the United States. The
stills of Orange ceuuty will this year yield
net less than 75,000 gallons of apple jack.
The farmcrsare gathering their apple crops
together already, and the distillers have
commenced operations.
The bulk of the apple whisky made in
in Orange county is required te supply the
local demand. The farmer takes his pay
for hig apples at the still in the tempered
juice of the fruit. lie stores his cellar with
applejack with the same care that he
stews away potatoes and cabbage for fam
ily use. The Orange ceuuty farmer who
has net a "vial" of the native tipple te
produce when visitors call, is considered as
lacking in hospitality. Stored away in the
cellars of the rural districts arc casks of
apple jack from which age has removed
the Damascene edge, and given it the
golden glow and oleaginous body that
mark it as the pefect tipple te the taste of
the ironclad tillers of the country's soil.
New and then apple whisky of this char
acter will be offered for sale through the
closing up of some estate. Fublie sales,
including the cellars of well known con
noisseurs in the product of the country's
stills, will draw mere representative pco pce pco
ple as prospective buyers than the sale of
any ether property that may be advertis advertis
ep, excepting, perhaps, a stable of 11am 11am
blctenian colts. Whisky of the class
named commands from $7 te $10 a gallon
under the hammer. This is net the kind
the bartender will set out at any of the
hestelries of the ceuuty. If the man asks
for whisky at an Orange county bar, the
bartender sets out apple jack. They
drink little else m the community.

Hirer Transportation.
Murine Journal, Cincinnati, Sept. 23.
Senater Geukling, in his recent great
speech in New Yerk, took occassieu te
belittle river transportation, especially in
the West and Southwest. Mr. Conkling
has evidently only a vague idea of the use
of the Ohie and Mississippi rivers that
they arc geed te wash in and lish in, and
possibly geed te drink if ene can't get
champagne, but as highways of trade they
are only worthy of his contempt. When
he comes te Cincinnati, as he is announced
te de shortly, some well-posted river man
or shipper ought te give him a lessen
in Western river commerce. lie
might form a different idea of the
magnitude and importance of the interests
he treats se lightly. Tell him of the two
or three million bales of cotton that every
year seek a market or factory ever the
Mississippi. Tell him of the many mil
lions of tens of coal, of iron, lumber, and
industrial and agricultural products that
throb through the great arteries, and
carry abounding life te the growing popu
lations of the Ohie and Mississippi valleys.
Tell him of the tremendous floods of
grain that are poured along these chan
nels of cheap transportation. It might
have a wholesome effect en his estimate of
the West and her resources. Why, only
last week a little tow beat but ene of
many similarly engaged, and growing
in numbcis went into New Oilcans
with a tow of 207,000 bushels of grain, or
about 5,175 tens. Hew many cars would
it take te move the cargo of that little
beat ? In round numbers 518 cars and
2C locomotives ! Arrangements arc new
being made for a line in which the tow of
each beat will carry 0,000 tens en low
water. It would take 900 cars and 45 lo
comotives te move the cargo of ene beat !
The towboat J. It. Williams took down the
river a tow of about 050,000 bushels of
coal ever 40,000,000 of pounds, or 20,000
tens. It would have taken about 2,000 cars
and 100 locomotives te move the cargo !
Steamboats with leads of cotton ranging
from 1,000 te 8,000 bales, and a propor
tionate amount of cotton seed and eii cake
fairly swarm the lower Mississippi ami its
tributaries. These are only specimen bricks
from the grand commercial structure built
up by river transportation.
