Tbcre were six of us there In the parlor.
We were talking of "culture" and " art,"
We exhausted Gulde, Leonarde,
And wc touched upon Kant and Descartes.
We seared upon Music's high pinions,
Wc descanted en Tennyson's style,
And were widely apart In opinions
Till somebody mentioned Carlyle.
Then three of them said he was "charming,"
And two et them said he was " grand."
And I found my position alarming
When I asked: "Could they all under
stand ?"
They declared him exceedingly simple,
It one's comprehension were clear;
And I caught the taint trace of a dimple
That redeemed a fair face from a sneer.
I left them extolling his grandeur.
And went te my room, where I wrote
A nonsensical extravaganza,
With the meaning entirely alleat.
II contained net the ftlntc3t suggestion ;
It was turgid, obscure and oblique.
But se solemn you'd swear, if net wisdom.
It was something exceedingly like.
I returned down the stairs and I said :
" Don't allow the lateness te part us
Until llrst, with permission, I've read

I read it with slew declamation.
And I emphasized each misty clause.
They received it with loud acclamation
And wlthme.-t unstinted applause.
They said it was "grand" and "prophetic,"
They admired its proleund, learned style.
And declared that where'er they had met it
They'd have known it was penned by Car

THi: LOCAL SCIENTISTS.
Meeting of the Llmia-an Society.
The society met en Saturday afternoon,
September 23, at 2 o'clock, in the ante
room of the museum, the president, Rev.
J. S. Stahr, in the chair ; five members
and five visitors president.
After the preliminary business the fel
lowing donations were made te the mu
seum and library :
nllisvum.
1. Three specimens of embryo opossums
by Mr. Stencr, of North Quccu street,
Lancaster. These arc part of a litter of
eleven taken from the matrix of a female
Didclpliis tirginiana by a friend of Mr.
Stencr's and by him donated te the so
ciety. 2. Adult and yennjj specimens of Thclia
latipes, or " Horned Tree-hoppers," by S.
P. Eby, esq., accompanied by the small
branch en which they had been found,
which they had punctured and much de
pleted. 3. Specimens of JJartilius binetatux, or
"potato-weasel," from Mr. Lytc, of Lam
peter texmship. These insects bere into
the potato stalks and injure them very
much.
4th. Larv:u of Lcncania wripuncla, or
"army worm," from Mr. Gee. Shreiucr,
of Manhcim township. Mr. Shrcincr found
them feeding en his tobacco plants in June
last.
5th. Specimens of Jlaltica pubescens from
Mr. T. Scott, of Marietta. These are the
famous " ilca-bectlc" which se extensively
depredates upon the tobacco plants.
Oth. Specimens of Calcareous par from
Quarryville, Lancaster county, by Mr.
William Iteelun.
7th. Twe English span ew nests found
in widening one of the sheds en the east
side of North Queen street.
8th. Three sprouted lemon seeds, show
ing that the seeds of the lemon occasion eccasion occasien
ly throws out germs and roots within the
sound fruit; and were discovered when
opened.
9th. Dr. Dubbs donated a very peculiar
buff-colored brick, manufactured at Mil
waukee, Wisconsin.
10th. Several specimenaef Pedalgus juccn
cus, from Mr. Henry Nelty. Mr. Nelty says
that from about the 2UtU te the 24th et
the present mouth he found these insects
very abundant in the northwest part of
this city. Within a space of ten yaids
square he captured ever three hundred
specimens. When the sun was warm
many of thein were en the wing, but when
it was cool, or in the evening or morning.
they were' found about the leaves of the
common rag weed (Ambrosia). As inauy
as a dozen would be found clustcied around
a single plant, and en pulling up the plants
a few weu'.d be found among the roots, and
around the weeds holes were visible where
tlicy seemed te have come up from the
ground ; nor did he find any around any
ether plants. He found no larva; nor pupa',
the question, therefore is, what connection
have they with these plants '.
Phrynosema. The living specimen of this
animal was kept confined since the last
meeting el the society in a glebe aqua
rium with caith en the bottom, and a
gauze cover, te prevent its escape. Living
grasshopper and ilics were confined with
it, but it did net appropriate any of them
indeed it appeared te be unconscious of
. their presence. During the whole month
of its incarceration it scarcely ever rested
for a moment, cxcej.t it may have been at
night, but from morning until the family
retired from the room at night, it never re
laxed its efforts te make its escape. Se far
as my cxpericucc gees, it is incapable of
domestication or familiarization. When
taken out of the tank and laid en the Jloer
it did net seem anxious te escape. Before
immersing it in alcohol, I attempted te
drown it, but it would net drown, and when
immersed it remained motionless for 20
minutes, and then made frantic efforts te
escape, and only succumbed after alternate
stugglcs, continuing half a hour.
I think therefore that Phrynosema is net
only untamable, bu; also endowed with a
vital tenacity which enables it te c mime
great privation and te exist under circum
stances which would be fatal te many ether
animals, and yet when handled it is per
fectly gentle and harmless.

Historical.
Part of an old bell clamp, by Lewis
Haldy. When the old German Reformed
church was tern down this fragment was
found in the belfry. It bears date March
1722, which gives it au antiquity of 158
years. It probably belonged te some old
bell used in the first church built by that
congregation.

Professer Haldcman having been an
honored correspondent of the Liuuasan so
ciety, en motion S. S. Rathven and Dr.
Davis were appointed a committee te re
port an expression of the sense of the so
ciety en the great less which science has
sustained by his removal.
After the passage of suudry small bills
and the usual intercourse among these
present, the society adjourned te the 30th
of October next.
