COLUMBIA NEWS.
OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE
Progress Uie Order or the Day Pell Ileal
1'crsenal.
The march of improvement is going en,
and -with it, step by step the Penn
sylvania railroad is progressing. One of the
latest of the new ideas in practical shape,
te which the company gives its confidence
and support is the "indicator," -which, as
its name signifies, is an invention by which
is indicated semcthiug what, we will try
te explain. The indicator, te begin with,
is a new invention ; it indicates time and
it indicates distance. With it, if the ex
periment te which it is being subjected,
proves it te be wertli what is claimed for
it, the company will be enabled te ascer
tain te a fraction of a mile the distance
made by a moving train in a given time,
the portions of the read where fast and
where slew time is made and lastly hew
long and where steps are made, the
time of such steps and the time of starting,
the whole te point te what the train men
may be held te any accountability for. The
indicator is new being experimented upon
in the cabin cars of freight trains, the.se
running with engines 188 and 253 being
the Columbia " cabins " selected. A pair
of wheels were taken from under both of
these cabin care and new wheels put in
their places. An attachment is then made
with the axle which, in its diameter and
circumference of ceursc, givcs the key note
tethc working of the indicator, and which
by reason of "the important part assign
ed it in the working of the invention
is necessarily smooth and of a select pat
tern. Frem the axle te the interior of the
car runs a roil, which in turn connects with
the machinery by which the many myste
ries of the indicator arc worked out. This
machinery, enclosed in a case with a glass
fient, works with clock-like precision
possibly it is clock machinery and indexes
te a certainty, with a lead pencil, attached
te an arm red, en blank paper the
time made wilh, the distance ac
complished. The paper used will
probably have the stations of the read
printed thereon and then the time may by
taken from station te station. The inven
tion proves te be a :;ucccss and, if adopted
en this read, it will be looked upon by
train men as an intruder, as it will con fine
them te the Maximum ami minimum
speed laid down in the company's rules
and will be a sure witness against them
when they increasu or decrease their
erdci-s. It is thought by some that the
jarring of the train will have some eft'ect
en the indicator's working, but, we judge,
this has been given due consideration.

The following reports of the speeches of
the Republican orators at the Fourth ward

count of the affair :
"Spirit Unnln" ami "Celestial Bye."
Frem 51. Brestus'n Speech.
lie believed the three huudrcd thousand
brave souls that died for the preservation
of the Union were looking down with ap
proving smiles from the bivouac of the
eternal camp beyond the river, reach ing
down their spirit bauds te the hands of
llesli of their former comrades, and
watching with celestial eyes that these
who remain among us shall net hand ever
the patriot deed te the keeping of these
who killed them.
What "Spirit Hands" Reach Fer.
Fiein the speech et J. Hay Brown, esq , late
tntoref Greek in Pennsylvania cellege:
The Grecnbackcrs and the Democrats
had simply committed adultery, were
caught in the act, and the outcemo
had been a rag baby. Prolonged ap
plause. The position of the Democrats in the
Maine affair reminded him or a story. A
man of talent, who get drunk sometimes,
was found deplorably drunk by an empty
headed fop, and the latter thought te poke
fun at him. He said : " You're- fcarlully
drunk." "I knew I am," said the talcuted
but drunken man ; " but I'll get ever this
after awhile, while you're a d d feel
and you'll never get ever that !" Se it was
with the Democrats in Maine; they'll
never get ever this victory. Laughter
and applause.
A Sight for " Celestial Eyes."
Frem Jake Ainwake, Favorite Republican
Orator.
The Democratic party had lived
twenty years en air, and tlrcy were se
puffed up that they'll get the colic se bad
in November that they'll burst. The Demo
crats of tesSay arc the corrupt, degenerate
spawn of the old Democratic shad, which
has hatched out states' rights men, seces
sionists, traitors and Neva Scetian Demo
crats half alligators and half dogs. Ap
plause and laughter. -
Then the old man crawled down the lad
der, and, putting his arm around the old
woman's neck, he said "Betsy, hadn't
we a h "1 of a fight?" That was about
the way the Democrats fought in putting
down the rebellion. Mr. "Amwake kept
his hearers in constant geed humor by his
anecdote and story, and retired te make
way for

Sbatting Off the Water.
The superintendent of water works is
engaged te-day in digging up the street at
the corner of North Queen and Orange
for the purpose of putting a step in the
water main at that point. As the grade
decends both from Centre square and the
railroad there will be a great deal of water
te bail out of the trench at North Queen
and Orange, when the water pipe is cut
and before the step can be put in. Early
te-morrow morning the water will be shut
off all along North Queen street, from
Centre square te the railroad, and will
remain shut off at least till neon, perhaps
longer. Persons along this part of the
street will save themselves inconvenience
by drawing enough water this evening te
supply them for te-morrow.
