The dew of tbe evening came down On cottage and village and town ; It came like a prayer en the sun-burdened air, And rested en rest as a crown. There was peace In the haze en tbc hill. There was peace In the rhyme of the rill. And the robin's rich note en the air was afloat, With a chirp, and a song, and a trill. Though she passed long age from my mind. Though she left me In sadness behind, She came back te me true In the fall of the dew. Once again ear affections te bind. There was peace In the gloom en my breast, As I looked te the far-sinking West ; In that dreamland I gazed en bright altars that blazed As beacons where the weary found rest. In the dew of the evening that tell On mountain and streamlet and dell, Frend hopes et the past before me were east Their tales of disaster te tell. I was glad that the close of my day And my darkness was net tar uwuy ; And my cj-ellds were wet, but net with regret, In the twilight of longings' decay. And the dew of my dreaming It fell On the ashes within my heart's cell ; And the eve of life's close drooped her head In repose. As she whispered, " All yet shall be well !" Hugh F. McDermott. A Democratic Methuselah. Benjamin Brewnfleld, Aged lOl Years, Makes a Hancock Speech. An interesting meeting was held by the Democrats of Menree, Fayette county, en Saturday night. Colonel Benjamin Brown field, a wealthy farmer, aged 101 years, presided. There were six vice presidents en the platform with him, whose united ages reach SOU years. Colonel Brewnficld, in opening the meeting, said : ''Providence has been very kind te me in prolonging my life and blessing me with health and strength. I have lived te be 101 years old. This is a great age, In my earlier days I took an active part in politics. I have mingled with your fathers and grandfathers and great-grandfathers en occasions like this in days long gene in the past. I voted for Themas Jcflersen for president in 1800. We had the same ques tion up then that we have new, whether this was a government of unlimited pow ers or a government of a few simple func tions expressly granted by the constitu tion. Jlr. Jeffersen contended that the great mass of the powers of our government remained with the states, while Mr. Adams and his party contended for a strong central gov ernment te override the state governments. I never missed a presidential election. I voted twice for Jeffersen, twice for Madi Madi eon, twice for Menree and three times for General Jacksen. I voted for Van Burcn and also for Polk, Cass, Pierce, Buchan an, Douglas, McClellan, Seymour, Greeley and Tildcn, and I hope te live te vote for General Hancock, and as the result of my long experience I would advise you te vote for him tee." The vice presidents were: Jno. Trautman, 94 years ; Cel. James Gardner, 8C ; James Snyder, 85; L. 31. Clawsen, 82; Geerge Morrison, 81, and Themas Scrnaus, 81. THE GKEATEST BLESSING-. Sluymaker, Agent for Reigart's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising pAij-si-cian et tills county, who lias extensively used the Brandy referred te in his regular practice. It is commended te the attention of these af llicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te lie used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive disea-es which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With n purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te me laverauie nonce ei invalid espe cially these atllicted with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specilic remedy, which 13 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or less debility, will iind this simple medicine, wlieu used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills and aches, lie it, however strictly understood that we prescribe and use but one article, anil that is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young triend, II E SLAYMAKER. This Brandy lias steed the test for years, and lias never failed, as lax as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preterence ever all ether Brandies, no matter wit h hew many jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent ilyspcpsia specilics would suffice te buy all the lJrandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brantty, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon nuin hers of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working larmcr had been afflicted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; lie had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Deer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, and in ids discourses often declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked np with astonishment, but after hearing et its wonderful effects in the cases of some of Lis near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and stcadilv; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the becend was taken he was a sound man. with a stomach capable of digesting anything which liecliese te eat. He still keeps it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since he has this medi cine lie has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A Pkactisihe Physician. H. E.
