Editors Intelligencer: We left
Minneapolis with regret en Tuesday
at 1130 a. m. That morning's
papers have the cheering news
from Maine. We endeavored te
comfort our Republican friends and re
joiced with our Democratic brethren in the
unexpected disaster te the former, and
equally unlooked-for geed luck te the lat
ter. Our friend Judge Ilea came with us
as far as Hastings, where he was booked
for a Republican speech that night. I fear
it partook mere of the character of a fun
eral sermon.
We seen reach St. Paul, of which we
have net the opportunity of seeing much
from the railroad. It is, however, an ac
tive business city, having extensive rail
road connections both cast and west.
There is great rivalry between St. Paul
and Minneapolis for the trade of the
Northwest. The former had the lead in
this regard in the past, but she is fast
losing her grip, owing te the rapid strides
of her rival in a commercial point of view,
the census showing that Minneapolis leads
in population several thousand, as well as
in manufactures.
We regard the location of Minneapolis
as mere favorable than St. Paul for the
building up of a great city, the site of the
former being a level plain, while the latter
is en a high bluff, but the most marked
feature in favor of the former is its. advan
tages in manufactures, arising from its
water power.
We are seen speeding en our way down
past Hastings, Red Wing, Reed's Land
ing, Lake City, Winona, &c, te La La
Cressc, where wc cress the Mississippi and
step for supper.
The railroad from St. Paul te LaCresse
fellows the line of the river pretty closely,
occasionally leaving it for a short time at
the numerous curves in the stream. The
country through which wc pass is by no
means inviting ; steep and rugged bluffs
rise up all along the river, in some in
stances receding from the shore a few
hundred yards. The narrow bottom lands
are sparely settled by a population whose
wretched appearance gives anything but a
cheering prospect te the passing traveler.
Night overtakes us seen after leaving
LaCresse; daylight finds us again ap
proaching Chicago, where we seen arrive,
and are transferred through its busy
streets te what was once the great Illinois
Central depot, but which was destroyed by
the great fire. A portion of the walls are
still standing and a temporary wooden
shed has been built en the ruined walls.
Here after a hasty breakfast we take the
cars for Cincinnati en the C, C. & L. R.R.
Immediately alongside of the railroad
outside of the city are being erected the
immense works of the Pullman palace car
company for the manufacture of their
cars. They are just being put uudcr reef
and arc the most extensive of the kind in
the world.
The same general appearance of the
country through Illinois is noticed by this
route, going hetnc, as that of the approach
te the city by the Pert Wayne route.
After passing the Indiana state line wc
find the country a geed deal broken and
primitive in its buildings, farming apar
atus, flic. Wc cress the Wabash and Tip
pecanoe, the latter near Lafayette, near
which place is the famous battle-ground
of Tippecanoe, of which wc, then a young
man, heard se much in the campaign of
1810.
Lafayette, Indianapolis and Grccnsburg
are all fiue towns. We reach Cincinnati
at 8:30 p. m., an hour and a-half behind
time ewiug te our heavy train. II.
