THINGS DOWN IN BART.
Our Regular Correspondence.
On Thursday, the ICth inst., Mrs. Leah
Gilliland, one of the eldest residents of
Bart township, was treated te a grand sur
prise by friends and relatives. Mrs. G.
had been visiting some of her children,
grand-children, and grcat-grand-children,
and en her return home she found her
house filled with guests, her tables laden
with all manner of delicaeies, and abeau
tiful'wrcath prepared in the form of a
crown by Miss Jesic Martin, a grand-niece
ready te be placed upon her brew as a
token of respect, and te designate her as
the honored guest of the occasion. The
surprise was one of the real ones, and the
old lady was well pleased with the result.
The M.E.extra meetings are in progress in
Georgetown, and our usually quiet village
is in consequence mere noisy of nights.
Quite a number of young men and "girls"
from the neighborhood are regular attend
ers at these meetings ; whether for geed
or evil, or from indifferent curiosity, their
lives in future will indicate.
The saddler shop of J. R. Chamber in
is decorated with a fine picture of the com
ing man, W. S. Hancock, and the saddler
often steps from his work te leek at it and
reflect en the past history of the man and
the future he will bring te f ur country.
W. S. Fcrrec thinks, from the manner
of his des; Tep, that an effort is still being
made te enter his store. Fer some two or
three nights past, Tep has been in a restless
state and keeps the family awake by his
incessant barking. Suspicious characters
have been seen and remarked upon by the
citizens of the vicinity, and the quiie
and Fete arc en the " qui vice."
Mr. J. II. Leech has advertised his farm
for sale and intends going te Philadelphia
if lie succeeds in making a sale. Mr.
Leccli lias been for five years a school di
rector in this township, and will be miss
ed in the capacity when leaves the town
ship. Bart Politics.
Bart is one of the most conservative
townships in the country; men of all
party afliliatiens are elected te fill town
ship officers. While the township has been
for several years in full control of the Re
publican party by a majority ranging from
15 te 33, yet in the coming November
election no party is bold enough te claim a
majority for either of the presidential can
didates. Ne doubt, the county ticket will
have a Republican majority, but bets arc
net flying around en the national ticket.
The Garfield pole that was te tower se
majestically at the nickel mines after the
Maine election was heard from, has failed
as yet te make its appearance. Wc pre -sumo
the reason was the same that caused
two calls te fail te organize a Garfield club
in Bart.
SALISBURY NEWS.
Frem our Regular Correspondent.
Our tobacco crop is nearly all housed
and much better than last year's crop.
The corn crop is also very fine and
almost all in shock.
The potato crop is net as large as last
year but is a fair average. We find that
the grub worm has injured the potatoes
considerably by boring into them. Never
before saw them as plenty at this season of
the year.

Our farmers are busy putting their te
bacce away and cutting their corn. The
corn crop premises te be a very geed one
this year.
On Tuesday, August 31st, the Demo
cratic boys of Gap and vicinity, who be
lieve strongly in the Democratic doctrine,
erected a beautiful pole in honor of ear
next president and vice president, Hancock
and English. The pole is as straight as
an arrow and has a beautiful taper. It
stands about 80 lect out of the ground,
has a cedar en the top, a Iluucesk and
English streamer and the dear old flag of
our country, which General Hancock sup
ported se bravely when our country was in
danger. About half way up the pole is a
finely painted beard with the name of
'Hancock " inscribed en in large letters.
The Republican men of Salisbury and
ether surrounding townships have erected
a pole in honor of the " DeGelycr con
tractor, Credit Mebilicr and Pacific rail
road candidate, James A. Garfield,'' which
is a few feet higher than the "boys"'
pole. But it is net the highest pole that
elects the president, but the highest and
lamest vote : and I am afraid that our
Republican friends will have te let their
"pole" drop quietly te the ground en the
morn of November 3, 1880, when the sad.
sad news comes that Garfield is beaten by
a majority of nearly, one-half :i million
votes.
On Saturday, September 18th, the
''young" Democrats of the Gap, ranging
from four te six years et" age, erected a
Hancock and English pole about fifty-two
feet out of the ground. A clever sized
flag floats from it. They have also a Han
cock and English beaid nailed en the
pole.
On Saturday morning, August 18th, the
young Republican who attends te
running the flag up the Garfield pole
must have been asleep when he put the
flag en the repe upside down, and ran it
up the pole and never noticed his mistake
until about an hour afterward, 'Nrhcn a
kind Democrat informed him that he had
his flag upside down. This is an example
of the Republican government if Garfield
is elected. They will have an upside down
government and the Democrats will have
te straighten it out and turn it.

Bloody Shirt Speeches by Held Orators.
The Junier Dc Gelycr club of Mt. Jey
was te have raised" a pole en Saturday
night, but it was found te require all the
strength of the seniors te get up the stick
which, like the party, is in three pieces.
After ene of the "best workers" who
lest a government office for cause net re
lated in his sdcccIi, aud hopes te get it
back under Garfield had spoken five
minutes there was a "granny" speech of
the most virulent bloody-shirt stripe.
The " cullud bruddcr " Archie was called
out, and though three cheers proposed for
him by a dusky sister were refused by his
white brethren, he launched out when the
disgusted white brethren sloped for the
nearest saloons and Archie quite broke
down. Capt Bailey, of color, followed him
and told a harrowing tale of slavery days
without reference te domestic woes pre
vailing in the North. The whites grad
ually quit the meeting, and the mekes
and the few remaining boys adjourned it
with feeble cheers.

Tbe Circus at Lltltz.
The Republicans expected te have a
great time at Lititz en Saturday evening.
They announced a pole-raising, wigwam
dedication, mass meeting and torchlight
precession, and boasted that they would
have eight hundred men in line. The fact
is they had just eighty-two persons in the
precession, about fifty of whom were
voters. The expected delegations from
Lancaster, Manbeim and ether points did
net put in an appearance. The wigwam
was "dedicated" by a few dull speeches
that failed te produce the least enthusiasm
and Andy Kauffman's participation only
reminded the people hew shamefully he
had betrayed his constituents at Chicago.
The Worst Yet.
The Republicans en Saturday raised a
small pole en the banks of Gcyer's ere
mines in Providence township. There was
a small crowd present and the speeches,
which were made by " Ceck " Gatchcll
and County Auditor James Cellins, were
about the worst yet made during the cam
paign. Anether Letter from Maine.
The following extracts from a letter re
ceived in this city from Auburn, Me.,
dated the 17th inst., show in what light
the people of the "Pine Tree state" view
the recent state election, and what they
expect te be the result in the presidential
struggle : " However the state election
may come out after the het campaign just
closed, had we known en Tuesday last
that we had certainly elected two members
of Congress and come within two or three
hundred votes of electing two mere, and
cut Davis s majority down te 500. we
would have fired our guns, rung our bells,
and the Republicans would have goue into
their hovels. But new they think that
they arc net beaten quite se bad as they
thought they had been and are thus
elated.
"If Indiana and Ohie give a fair show
for the Democrats yen may confidently ex
pect a majority for Hancock in this state.
The Republicans in ether states are say
ing that the Fusion will net held in No
vember. They cither lie or de net under
stand the situation. The state committee
of the Democrats and Grccnbackers agreed
in the summer, before the state canvass, en
an electoral ticket four Grccnbackers
and three Democrats. Seme very ultra
Grccnbackers called a state convention, te
come efi in a day or two, te nominate a
straighteut Weaver ticket. Delegates
have been elected by the Grccnbackers te
it, but se far as heard from they are for
the Fusion electoral ticket nominated by
the state committees. Solen Chase was
here yesterday ; he has been talking of a
new ticket, but he has new backed down
and gees for tbe Fusion ticket agreed
upon. Se far as I knew all the Green
backers are for Hancock excepting Solen
Chase. Loek out for a Hancock victory
in Maine."
THE ' SOLDIER VOTE."

I noticed a table in the Examiner (taken
from some papert which purported te
.show hew the soldiers voted when in the
army, and which was probably correct as
it was returned. But if all returns were
used as that of our regiment it is a wonder
that there were any Democratic votes re
turned at all. In 18C4, at the presidential
election I was inspector in the 188th
Pcnna. Vels., and in the actual vote, in a
poll of about 700 votes, there were exactly
25 votes for Lincoln, all the balance were
ferMcClellan. But this vete was never
returned te the state. It was taken by
Majer Richard, who was then in command
of the regiment, and by him, in the pres
ence of the guard, it was thrown into the
fire and burned. This I can prove by the
men of the regiment, both Republicans

The Temperance county convention met
in Temperance hall, this city, en Monday,
Dr. Jesiah Martin in the chair and P. S.
Geedman acting as secretary. Dr. Martin
and James Black, esq., made speeches
against both of the main political parties
and favoring independent action by the
Prohibitionists. Mr. Kennedy, of Salis
bury, was for Tempcrcnce men in local
offices, but did net think it necessary te
endorse Ncal Dew for president. Gee.
Ivuex was for going the whele way. Fin
ally the following committee was appoint
ed te report a county ticket : James
Black, of Laucaster ; Mr. King, of Little
