The Twe Parties.
New Yerk Journal et Commerce.
A. day or two since we took notice of a
speech carefully prepared and read from a
printed copy, by Mr. Chittenden, member
of Congress from Brooklyn, in which he
classified the voters at the cemitfg election
as the solid Seuth with a let of Tammany
adherents in the city of New Yerk en the
one side, and a solid North of Union-loving
people en the ether. His lancuage
was very explicit : "The parties te this
issue are practically the solid Seuth and
Tammany against all the loyal men of the
North and West." This was reiterated
in various forms, and was the chief staple
of his address. We showed, most con cen con
cenclusivcly, as we think, that there
is no truth whatever in the state
ment We gave 43,047 as the Tammany
vote of New Yerk city, when that city did
if hest- at the last state election, and
proved that there were inside of New
Yerk city 60,550 Democrats net under
Tammany ; and outside of this chy 349,
753 (at least) Democratic voters, against
372,245 who voted the Republican ticket.
There are ever one million voters in the
state of New Yerk, and Mr. Chittenden
will net claim mere than about a moiety
of them as members of his party. It fol fel
lows therefore, that he is stating what he
knows net te be true, or else that he be
lieves thcre are half a million voters in the
state of New Yerk who arc absolutely
traitors te their country.
A political speaker may claim that his
party is composed of the mere intelligent
class, or of the better educated class, or of
the wealthier class ; but when he says that
it includes " all the loyal men" he leaves
none but rebels and traitors en the ether
side. And this was the substance of Mr.
Chittenden's division : None but the ad
herents of Tammany sympathizing with
Southern rebels will vote for Hancock ;
and all ether voters are arrayed for Gen
eral Garfield. That four hundred thou
sand in the state of New Yerk, outside of
the city, stand up te rebuke Mr. Chitten
den's assertion. They arc as loyal, as vir
tuous, as industrious, and as true in all
that makes up geed citizenship as Mr.
Chittenden and his Republican friends. A
great many of them, like their illustrious
candidate, were soldiers in the iate war,
and as self-sacrificing as any of the Repub
lican army of the contractors who spent
the anxious hours in amassing large for
tunes during the conflict.
It will be seen that Mr. Chittenden docs
net confine himself te this state. He claims,
eutside el Tammany, every loyal voter in
"the North and West." Ohie has about
three-fourths of a million of voters ; of
of these G50.771 voted at the last presiden
tial election, and Hayes, nominated from
that state, only obtained a majority of
2,747. At the coming election General
Garfield, also chosen from Ohie, is net
likely te de much better. It then fellows
that only half the voters of Ohie arc
" Union loving people !"
There is no solid North of voters for the
Republican party. All of the great North
ern states arc nearly equally divided be
tween the two parties ; and a claim that
"all the loyal men of the North and
West" are Republicans is a direct asser
tion that half the voting population of this
section are traitors te their country, or at
least have no attachment for its institu
tions. If, as these orators represent, all
the Seuth is "solid " in its antagonism te
the union, and ripe for revolt against our
government at the first favorable oppor

ment, it is simply this : The fact that half
the voters of the North join with a major
ity of the vetcrs of the Seuth te elect
a new administration is conclusive
proof that they arc all traiter3
alike! The " solid Seuth " is only another
form of expression for a majority of South
ern votes. If then all the Southern states
gives a majority for Gen. Hancock, and
half the vetcrs of the North, joining with
them, elect him te the presidency, that is
" the most conclusive demonstration that
could Ihj offered," according te the Times,
hat three-fourths of the vetcrs of this
country are guilty of disloyalty ! Whether
the election of Hancock is "possible and
probable " or net, it is true te-day that
these Southern majorities and ever two
and a half million of their Northern breth
ren arc jointly in favor of it, se that even
if Gen. Garfield is elected it is still " con
clusively demonstrated" en the Times'
theory, that a large majority of the vetcrs
of this great republic arc traitors te their
country.
Frem this grand charge of " disloyalty"
the Times descends te details, and accuses
the Democratic party of having within its
fold at the North the "ignorant and su
perstitious immigrant," "beside whom the
negre is an educated, virtuous and law
abiding citizen," and of including among
its adherents " the citizen, who is net the
negre's peer, from the slums of New
Yerk." Wc cannot see that this makes
much difference. If the 400,000 Demo
crats in Pennsylvania, the 350,000 of the
same faith in Ohie, the 400,000 in New
Yerk state outside of this city, the 70,000
in Connecticut, the 100,000 in I.Iassachu
setts, the 220,000 in Indiana, the 200,000
in Illinois, and the remaining tnrco tnrce tnrco
feurtus of a million in ether northern and
western states who arc going te vote
with the maieritv of the Seuth for Han
cock are by this determination proved be
yond dispute te be "disloyal" te the
country, the fact that there is among them
a few ignorant voters, mero or less, who
are net the peer of the negre, is of little
consequence. Wc think, with the Times,
that it is "possible and probable" that
General Hancock will be elected. We
wonder hew these speeches and editorials
which impeach net the geed sense merely,
but the "loyalty" of three-fourths of the
people of this country, will read of their
authors in the light of such an event
after it has occurred ? Will they sell out
all that they have and lice te some far
country, that they may net see the
ruin they have predicted? We
leek for no such rash action en
their part. Chittenden, who has the
soundest head in Congress en questions
of finance, will held en te his government
bends, and if he is re-elected, as wc expect
he will be, turn his very respectable gifts
te enlighten his associates en a subject
where he is still fitted te be a teacher.
And our neighbor the Times will raise its
rents te meet the new era of prosperity,
and continue te gratify a host of readers ;
as it has for years past, by the issue of a
first-class daily paper. And the "disloyal"
voters, in celebrating their victory, will
mimn!mnii1v firmrivn lint.h of them for
their mad utterances in the excitement of
the present campaign.
