AAvtsed by tae GMUMWi Telegraph. The Gardener' Monthly for September has a fall history of the original Seckel pear tree, which is still standing in the "Neck,"mustratedwithacutoftree. It is only about half standing ; in fact, net being much mere than a shell. It still bears a few pears. It is supposed te be about one hundred and fifty years old. It is conjectured that the seed from which the tree sprung was thrown orerbeard in a core from & vessel as it passed down the Delaware, which, being washed te the shore, took root and grew, there being subsequently dykes thrown up te protect the bank aeainst the encroachment of the tides. The farm en which the tree stands is new owned by Mr. Bastian. We have new upon our premises a Seckel pear-tree grafted from the original tree. It grew upon the grounds of the late Simen Gratz, esq., en Bread street, whence we had it removed when it was ever thirty years old, some twenty years age, and it new gives us a yearly crop of fruit of the best quality. Small Compost Heaps. All farmers knew the value of "com post " and hew te prepare it Many far mers manufacture hundreds of leads of the best manure in this way. They gather together en the premises forest leaves, cornstalks, including the roet0, weeds, vines, eftal from fencc-cernerp, muck from ponds and ditches, occasional sprinklings of lime through the mass, layers of barnyard manure, and thus build up oblong squares and let it remain ever winter. When April arrives the mass has gene through fermentation and comminu cemminu comminu teon, and presents a mound of fertilizing matter better than a small geld mine would be te the proprietor of the farm. But we want te see these compost heaps in the garden, and there is no reason why they should net be there as well as upon the farm. There is rubbish enough in the garden, with the assistance of leaves, some meld from the weeds, if attainable ; if net, from portions of the premises where it can be spared ; scrapings from the turnpike ; manure from the stable, and every attain able substance that will decay through the winter. A little slacked lime will be a geed assistance. A half dozen te a dozen leads of excellent manure will be manu factured by the time it is wanted in the spring, without incurring scarcely any ex pense. Apple Culture. If we leek back only a few years, when te talk with farmers en their neglect in planting mere apple orchards and raise mere 01 tins tue most vaiuaeie el an lruu, it was te be met with the same auswer that it was entirely useless te attempt it, as the land had run out, se far as the cul ture of this fruit was concerned, and we must depend upon ether sections the West for our supply of apples hereafter. By refe-ring te our columns from twenty te thirty years age, it will be seen that we tried our best te combat this idea, and te show that it was net the land, but the .eeglect te de justice te the orchard. The land was net kept in geed order, being seldom manured, the trees left unpruned and allowed te die from old age, and net renewed by the planting of ether trees, first selecting such varieties but only a few that are known te be the best suited te the soil and the demands of the mar ket. In time, by this prodding, efforts weie made te see what could be done ; and we may add that many of these efforts were by "fancy farmers" (if we may se call them) from the cities, who did ret step at spending money in attempts te de what in earlier periods had been se successfully done in apple raising. The result, in nearly evciy case, has mere than realized all their anticipations, and we can new see here at our very doers he products of the orchard in quantity and quality beyond anything known in the past. Hence, apple culture is fast becoming an impor tant branch of farming, and as profitable, all things considered, as any followed te the same extent upon the farm. THE GREATEST BLESSING. A simple, pure, harmless remedy, tliat cures every time, ami prevents disease by keeping the bleed pure, stomach regular, kidneys and liver active, is the jrreatcstblesing ever con ferred upon man. Hep Hitters is tliatiemedy, and Its proprietors arc being blessed by thou sands who have been saved and cured by it. Will you try It? See ether column. A Perfect Martyr. "I was a perfect martyr te rheumatism," a lialeand nearly individual was heard te re ma rk; tie ether dav, "but," continued he, "Dr. Thern:) Fclcclric Oil banished the pains, which racked my joints and muscles anu leek al uie new new." It Is commended je the attention Ot these af flicted wita Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe cially these afflicted with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which i3 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with lecble appetite and mere or less debility, will find tnis simple xiediclne, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their Ills and aches. Be It, hewcvci slrict.lv understood that we prescribe and use but one article, and that Is REIGAET'S OLD BRANDT, Sold by our enterprising young friend, H E SLAYMAKEB. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies, no matter with bow many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that Is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof of the curative powers el Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon num bers of witnesses one case In particular we Cat- A hard-working farmer bad been afflicted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly no appetite In fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Beet Beer. He Is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, and In his discourses often declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When adviseu te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked np with astonishment, but after hearing et Its wonderful effects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man.with a stomach capable of digesting anything which hejehoseteeat. He still keeps it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie has tins medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A Praotisine Phtbiciav. H. E.
