A rrelband Scholar Gene. Philadelphia Ledger Ed. Professer Samuel S. Haldeman, who died sqddcnly of disease of the heart last Friday, at his home en the Susquehanna river, near Columbia, Pennsylvania, was one of these quiet students and investiga tors who acquire and contribute te the common stock for the use of mankind vast funds of knowledge. Many men achieve a noisy and wide-spreading renown en a tithe of the learning .he possessed and en but small fractions of the work he did. Although he was known te institutions of learning both at home and abroad as an expert geologist and investigator of na tural science, and as one of the profound est linguists and philologists of our day still that knowledge was confined te lim ited circles. Bern in Lancaster county in 1812, and beginning his studies as a naturalist in the open book of nature while yet a very young boy, he never lest his fervor in that pursuit. It kept by him at school, and at Dickinsen college, of which he was a graduate, se that almost immediately after arriving at manhood he adopted the profession of geologist and seen after became connected with the geological survey of the state of New Jersey. He did service also en the geological survey of our own state, and has been a teacher of the science in a num ber of collegiate institutions. But distin guished as he was in that Held, and as an investigator in pakcontelogical science, he was still mere eminent as a student of lan guage, and for his researches in compara tive philology, of which science he has been for many years and was at his decease pro fessor in the University of Pennsylvania. While yet quite a young man (twenty-two years age) he wen, ever a scoie of learned European competitors, the prize offered by Sir William Trcvcllyan, in 1837, for "the best cssav en reform in the spelling of English." Professer Haldeman had an unappeas able appetite for acquiring languages, aud he knew them by the score, modern and ancient, dead and living, occidental and oriental. Whatever language had a litera ture was known te him. It is doubtful if any person living was a pre founder student in these matters or was mere learned than he. lie ought te be ranked with Profes Profes eor Whitney, of Yale, and Max Mullcr. As a teacher he was one of these raie men who taught what he had learned from origi nal sources, net what he had get at second hand from ethers ; one whose scholarship and deep learning arc an honor te his na tive state. This new much abused Aleohelie Slimulanl was never intended as a beverage, but le be used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diseases which Bwecp away their annual thousands- of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe cially these mulcted with that miscrable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which i3 nothing mere or less than Brandy. Tke aged, wllk lccble appetite ami mere or less debility, will find tkis simple medicine, wken used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills and aches. Be it. hnwvi strictly understood that we prescribe and use but one article, and that is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young ti end, II E SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Ritindics, no matter with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would suflicc le buy all the Ilrandy te cure any suck case or cases. In proof of the curative powers et Beigart's Old Brandy, In ceses of Dyspepstn, we can summon num bers of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer had been atHictcd with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict bis diet te crackers and stale bread, mm jis ucteruge lie used Aicurnnn s Keet licer. lie is a Alctueuist, and then, as now new preached at times, and in his discourses ettcn declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Relgart's Old Brandy, In his case, lie looked up with astonishment, but after hearing et its wonderful ell'eet.s in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken be was a Round man, with a stomach capable of digesting anything which licgchese te eat.
