There is an inscription en a gravestone in New Jersey, which is worthy of the savage dean of St. Patrick's : - ' Header, pass en don't waste your time. On bad biography and bitter rhyme. Fer what I am. tills Crumbling clay insures, And what I was Is noaflalret yours." Seme disappointed lever doubtless in dited the following, peer disillusioned man, te a disdainful beauty : " Your breast is whlte as mountain snows, Your cheek Is like a blushing rose, Your eye-i are black as ripened sloes, LI ice diamonds de thev glitter I de net llatter like a feel The diamond Is a cutting tool. The rose is thorny, snow is cool. And sloes arc very bitter !" The ensuing epitaph is said te exist in Rizmurry church yard : " This stone was raited by Sarah's lord, Net Sarah's virtues te record : They're tee well-known by all the town, But it was raised te keep her down." But here is another en the ether side of the question, wherein the husband re ceives the condemnation eftcner meted out te the wife : " Here lies the body or Mary Ferd Wc hope her soul U with the Lord ; Hut if ler Tephet she's changed this llf, Belter be there than .Jehn Ferd's wife." The wpuld-bc beauty and the would-be " blue " are " hiteff" in the following : " The golden lialr Camilla wears Is herb who would have thought It ? She sweats 'tis hers, and true she swears. Fer I knew where she bought It." On a poetess who had red hair : ' Unlertunatc woman hew sad your let Your ringlets arc red and your poems are net." Samuel Bishop was called the "Martial of England," and was the author of the "Maiden's Choice :" "A feel and knave with dlllcrcnl views, Fer Julia's hand apply. The knave, te wed his lertune, sues, The loel te please his eye Ask you hew Julia will behave ? Depend en't ler a rule. If she's a feel, she'll wed the knave, If she's a knave, the loel." The profession come for their share of raillery even the clergy de net escape for example : Cries Sylvia te a reverend dean, ' What reason can be given. Since marriage is a holy thing, that there Is nene In heaven." " There arc no women there." he said. She quick returns the jest. " Women thfre are; but I'm afraid they ean- net llnd a priest." This pungent bit of satire emanated from Rebert Dodsley, who began life as a foot man and ended it as a successful bookseller and author. The unknown writer of the following, doubtless, thus revenged him self en a tedious seimenizer : "Jehovah, ruler et the earth and skies, oft clxMethc foehbh te confound the wise. If se (the audience willugree) the Lord has made no blunder in selecting Ferd." The lawyers are excoriated in their turn. Witness the following. Like the preceding possibly composed by a sufferer. Twe lawyer, when a knotty case was o'er. Sheek iumdsnnd were as trlendly as before. " Zounds!" tald a client, " I would fain knew hew Yeu can be friends w he were such fees Just new." Theu feel!" said one. "we lawyers, though be keen, Like shears ne'er cut ourselves, but what's be tween." The poets arc mere severe en each ether than anyone else, thus confirming the vul gar saying that we must set an Irishman te roast mi Iiibhmau c. g., Cellcy (Jibber, whom Pepe enthroned as king of the Dunnccs, was poet laureate, and his breth ren of the pen envied him accordingly, one of them venting his spleen by the follow ing lines : " In niciry old Ergland it onee was a rule The king had his poet and also his loel. But new we're se friigal,,ld,havc you te knew it. That Cibbcr can serve both for feel and for poet," ITcrc is another equally graceful and polite : " Sir, I admit your general rule, That every poet Is a loel, Hut en yeursclt will serve te show it That every feel is net a poet.' Martial wrote many geed epigrams (and many bad ones, say his readers) and docs net fail te touch upon the tendency of authors te sneer at each ether. The two following arc different translations of the same, ad auctum. The first is by Sir Jehn llaringten, the godson of the great Elizabeth, aim himself a fertile writer el one distich that the world will net will ingly let die. "Treason doth never prosper what's the reason 1 Fer it it prosper, none dare call it treason." AD AUCTL'M. " A brother set ibbler calls my verses wi eng In point of art ; small merit can he sec. Well, since my readers like my simple song, That, I am sure. Is quite enaiigh for me The man who gives a public dinner leeks Te please his guests, net ether people's cooks. "The readers and the hearers llke my books, But yet j-emc writers cannot them digest ; But what care I? ler when I make a least I would my guests should piuise It, net the cooks." Addison translated Maitial's celebrated quatrain : ' In all my humors, whether grave or mellow, Theu'rt veil a touchy, tcstv, pleasant fellow. Hast se much wit anil mirth and silicon about thec. There i no living with thee or itheut thee." Se the Latin poet has been fortunate in his English interpreter. HOSTBTTBR'S CELEBRATED Netice. Slaymakcr, Agent for Reigart's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who Las extensively used the Brandy referred te In his regular practice. It Is commended te the attention of these af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency In the cure of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pie sent te the laverablc notice et invalids espe cially these alllictcd with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which 13 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or less debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or ull their ills and aches. Be it, however strictly understood that wc prescribe and use but one article, and that Is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, II E SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies, no matter with hew many Jaw-break! ng French titles they arc branded. One-fourth of the money that Is yearly thrown away en various Impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te euro any such case or cases. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon num bers of witnesses one case in puitieular we riti? A hard-working tanner had been afilictcd with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of yeais; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had four eructatiens con stantly no appetite in lact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers anil stale bread, and as a beverage he used Mcl rami's Beet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, its new, preached at times, and In his disceur-cs elten declaimed earnestly against all kin ds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astonishment, but after hearing et its wonderful ellects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, lie at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man, with a stomach capable of digesting any thing which lu-chesc te eat. He stlil keens it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A PitAcnsrse Physician. H. E.
