The boys were talking about the kind of
business they would cheese, when Uncle
Asa came into the room. As Uncle Asa
had tried several kinds and been prosperous
in all, they appealed te him for advice.
" What I want te knew is this," said
Charley, in the course of the discussion
which followed : " Yeu have bought and
sold a geed many things, but what has
turned out te be the most profitable ?"
Uncle Asa considered a moment, while
a curious smile passed ever his pleasant
rosy face.
" Well, if I were te name any one thing
which I have handled and which has in the
long run proved most te my advantage
well," said the old gentleman, nodding de
cidedly, "I think I must say, a lead of
weed."
"A lead of weed ?" chorused the boys.
They had expected he would say wool, or
wheat, or hardware, or indigo ; and they
couldn't believe his reply was quite seri
ous. "But it is!" said Uncle Asa. "A
lead of weed, and net a large lead, either ;
net nearly se large as it looked. It was
really the beginning of my fertune, and I
ewe mere te it than te anything else I ever
dealt in.
" Tell you about it ? Of course I will, if
you wish it ; and perhaps it will help te
start you in the right direction.
"It was when I was a boy about your
age Charley ; l think 1 was sixteen that
fall. The summer work was well ever ;
the winter school had net yet begun ; and
my cousin Medad and myself were consid
ering hew we should earn a little pockct peckct pockct
mener. My father heard us talking ever
some boyish schemes, and said te us :
"'I can give you an idea better than
that. There's the oak that blew ever last
spring, in the mill-pasture.

cut it up, and have all you can
of it.'
" ' But there's work iu that,' I said.
'"Yes; se there is in almost any hon
est job that peeple are willing te pay
money for. liut it isn't se hard as you
think,' said my father. One stroke at a
time ; se many strokes an hour ; se many
hours a day. That's the tray great things
are accomplished. It isn't much-of a tree ;
you'll wish there was mere of it before
you get through.'
" Well," Uncle Asa continued, ' we
undertook the job, and we did wish there
was mere of it. With a cress-cut saw and
beetle and wedges, then with a hand saw
aud an axe, we reduced that tree te stove
weed in a very short time ; and had fun
of it tee. Beys have only te be interested
in their work, you knew, te hnd it pleas
ant. " We saw profit in every stick, and had
as much talk about what we would de
with the money, as if we had been young
millionaires discussing some great pro
ject. "There's a geed deal in the way you
pile weed, te sell it, Mcdad said. 'There's
Jake Sleeker he says he can take nine
cords of weed aud pile it ever ami make
ten of it, easy as nothing.'
"'Yes,' I replied ; 'and father says he
can threw his hat through seme of Jake's
woodpiles such great holes ! He don't
really make ten cords of it that way.'
"'Yes, he does,' Mcdad insisted.
' There, s holes through every weed-pile ;
and you measure se much for a cord,
whether they're big or little.'

" 'We'll see about that,' Medad replied,

with a laugh. We're going te make the

" 'Of course,' I said ; and waited with
a geed deal of curiosity te see hew he
would manage.
" He showed me in a day or two. We
had an old oue-herso wagon ; we harnessed
Delly te it, and backed it up te our weed
pile. Then we began te lay the sticks
loose in the box, se as te make them take
up as much room as possible
"But they did net till up as fast as wc
had expected, for we knew that if we
piled them tee loosely, they would be apt
te shake down together en the way te the
village, and se cause our lead te shrink be
fore we sold it.
"Mcdad looked at the weed in the box
when it was half filled, and then at that
which remained en the ground, and shook
his head dubiously. "Twen't de!' he
said. ' Wc ought te make three leads of
it ; but at this rate wc shan't make two.
I've an idea !' "
" What ?" I said, wondering hew he
would get out of the difficulty.
"'Threw it all out again; I'll show
ye!'
"I didn't like that notion; but he in
sisted, and the weed was all unleaded but
a few sticks in the bottom of the wagon
box. With these he began te 'build 'the
lead, as he aptly termed it. Instead of
laying sticks together all one way, he
placed a few en tha bottom far apart, and
ethers crosswise en these, also very far
apart, cob-house fashion. Then he called
upon me for mere weed.
"'But, Mede,' I objected, 'this will
never de.'
" 'Why won't it de?' he demanded.
" It's cheating, isn't it?'
" 'It's no mere cheating than the way
Jake Meeker piles his weed is cheating.
Other folks de se. Only we make our pile
a little mere hollow than common.'
" I couldn't deny the truth of the argu
ment. And if ethers made the most of
their money by their skill in piling it, why
shouldn't wc de the same ?
" Still I hesitated. A man might per
haps be accused for cheating a little, but
we were preparing te cheat a geed deal.
" ' The principle is the same,' Mcdad
said, when I mentioned my scruples
(pretty fellows we were te talk of princi
ples!) 'It ain't cheating exactly; but
cveu if it is, it's what everybody docs, iu
the way of business. Ye can't get along
without it ; mabby ye can in the next
world, but you can't in this. Who tells
the bad points in anything he wants te
sell? Don't everybody cover them up, and
show the geed points, and make the most
of 'cm? Of course they de. Hand me
mere sticks !'
" I wasn't convinced in my heart and
conscience by this plausible speech. But
my cousin, who was a year elder than I,
had a great influence ever me, and I must
confess that I was a little te anxious te
get rich out of that weed. Se I merely
said, ' Don't make the hollows tee large,
Mede,' and handed him mere sticks.
" ' I'll leek out for that,' he said. 'New
you'll see.'
"After about half the lead had been
built hollow, he put our croekedest and
meanest sticks ever it, and then covered
the whole with nice weed closely packed
filling the wagon, se that, te all appear
ances, we had a fine compact lead.
"My father came out and looked at it,
as we drove out through the yard, and
praised us for our industry. ' Well, well,
boys,' said he, ' you've get a handsome
lead of weed. I must sav. I'd buv it nf
you, out I suppose it will be just as well for
. . 0 -"

can get for it.'
"I think it will be better, said Mede,
with a sly wink at me. 'Whatis6ucha
lead as that worth?'
'"Stove-weed like that white oak
solid lead right through,' said my father,
running his eye ever the wagon-box,
' ought te bring at least two dollars.'
" 'We're going te get three for it,' said
my cousin.
'"That's tee much,' said my father.
'Never, boys, try te get mere for a thing
than it is really worth.'
"I knew that he always acted upon this
principle himself ; and I felt seme pangs
of conscience as I thought of the empty
spaces hidden in that lead.
"But I'll tell yen what you may de,' he
said. 'Drive te Deacon Finch's store,
and get him te leek at your lead. He
knows better than I de what weed like
that is worth in the village, and if he says
three dollars is about right for it, why,'
my father added, with a shrewd twinkle,
' get it if you can !'
JHe knew very well that Deacon Finch
wouldn't say any such thing. And as we
dreve out into the read my cousin laugh
ingly said that the deacon was the last
man he would ask te examine that lead.
" But as we were driving into the vil
lage, we met Deacon Finch in his chaise ;
and the temptation te play a sharp game
en him was tee much for my cousin. Fer
my own part, I was feeling pretty sick of
the idea of selling the lead in its present
shape te anybody; and I strongly object
ed te the proposed attempt en se sagacious
a man as tbe deacon .
" It happens just right, don't you see?"
Medad insisted. ' He won't tret out of his
chaise ; and it's a splendid looking lead,
as you leek down en it. If he buys it he
will tell us te drive it te his house, and of
course he won't go te seeus unload it.'
" Se he drove up en the readside and
stepped the deacon as he was passing.
'Mr. Finch,' he said, 'would you like te
buy a lead of iirst-rate white oak weed ?
Just loe': at it if you please.'
"I've weed enough," said the deacon.
' But it's a nice looking lead you've get ;
and I guess you won't have any trouble in
disposing of it.'
" ' What is such a lead as that worth
delivered in town?' asked Mcdad. 'We
cut it ourselves.'
" ' Hew much is there?'
" ' I don't knew ; haven't measured it :
just call it a lead," said Mcdan.
" ' Geed as that all the way through ?'
quiried the deacon.
About the same,' said Mcdad.
'"Well, from a dollar-seventy-five te
two-and-a quarter ; somewhere along
there,' replied the deacon.
" 'Will you give us two-and-a-quarter?'
Mcdad was quick te inquire.
" 'I told you I had weed enough. But I
like te encourage boys ; I'll leek at your
lead.' And te the terror of one of us,
very sure, Deacon Finch slowly and delib
erately get out of his chaise.
"I don't suppose anything in our leeks
caused him te suspect our honesty; for
my cousin did the talking, and I must say
I could net but envy the cool and candid
manner with which he carried en his part
in the interview.
" ' Yeu are Mr. Prank's beys,ain't you?'
said the deacon, going te the bind end of
the wagon.
'"lam Mr. Prank's son,' Mcdad replied
promptly. ' This is my cousin.'
"Geed weed ; well spiit ; pretty smart
boys !" said the deacon, tumbling ever a
few sticks en top. ' Guess I'll take it.'
'"Shall we deliver it at your house?'
Medad asked, almost tee easterly.
" ' Wait a minute ! What's here ?' cried
the deacon, thrusting down his hand and
pulling up one of the hidden creeks. ' Is
there much like that ?' and he began te
dig down straight into ene of our choice
hollows.
" 'Sce here, if yen plcase !' said iledad
alarmed, 'you needn't take the weed if
you don't like it, but don't spoil our lead !'
" 'Spoil your lead !' echoed the deacon,
with indignant scorn, thrusting in his arm
up te his shoulder. 'Yeu wouldn't be
afraid of my spoiling an honest lead ; but
what sort of a lead is this ? Its a perfect
cheat, and you are a couple of ras
cals !'
" ' Yeu needn't take it if you deu't want
it !' Mcdad repeated, mero angry than as
hamed, I am sorry te say. ' We just put
it in that way te make a handscme
lead of it ; but we don't expect anybody
te pay for it until they've seen it thrown
efT.'
" The deacon did net, evidently, put
much faith in this falsehood ; for lie rep
rimanded us again sharply as he climbed
back into his chaise.
" ' I guess he was about right, Mede,' I
said, as we watched him drive away. ' We
arc a couple of rascals !'
" ' Pshaw ! who cares ? It's what every
body does,' said SIcde, blustcringly ; ' what
he does himself, every time he sells goods
out of his Btere. It takes a regue te catch
a regue. We'll leek out next time.'
" He laughed scornfully when I begged
him te drive home and reload the weed in
honest fashion. But he was shy of mak
ing the sale where the deacon would be
likely te hear of it.
"We'll go ever te the East Village,'
he said. ' It'll be dusk when we get there;
nobody will knew us ; and by that time
nobody can leek into our lead.'
"This plan was carried out in spite of
my tee feeble objections. I drove the
horse, while Medad went from deer te deer
in the East Village, offering the weed
'deg cheap,' he said, because it was se
near night and we wanted te sell out and
go home.'
"His idea of 'deg cheap ' was two dol
lars, although he tried hard te tret three.
At last we found a woman who confessed
that she was out of weed, and must get
some seen, but said she was tee peer te
buy cord-weed, and then hire a man te
cut it.
" Medad convinced her that it would be
much better for her te buy ours alreadv
cut.
" 'But I haven't get three dollars in the
world!' she said. 'I am really peer,
dreffle peer! If you'll threw off half
your lead into my shed, I'll give you a del
lar ana a nan.
" ' Can't de that, nowhew,' said Mcdo ;
'for nobody then will want te buy the
ether half. I should think net !' he said
te me aside, with a comical grimace.
" Will you trust me for the ether dol
lar and a half?' she asked. 'I am Mrs.
Ober Widow Ober; everybody knows
me.'
" 'That didn't suit my cousin's views,
either
"'Tell ye what!' he said. 'Give me
twe-and-a-quartcr new, and you shall have
the lead ; it's tee little, but we've get te
get home.'
" Twe dollars and twenty cents was all
she had, and Mede consented te take that.
The peer woman paid down the money
with a sigh, and we threw the weed into
her shed.
"She offered te held a lantern fonts,
but we were glad enough te dispense with
that luxury. I don't knew when she dis
covered what a small pile the weed made,
which looked se large in our wagon ; cer
tainly net until after we were gene, for she
came te the deer as we backed around,
and said 6he was very much obliged te us,

" The resolution was, never in all my
life te resort te dishonesty of any kind, no
matter what the seeming necessity, or the
temptation.
"It is a resolution I have never broken.
It hasn't kept me peer, either. I am net
very rich, and yet I believe I am better off
te-day than l should be if 1 had been dis
honest. I have always enjoyed a reputa
tion for fair-dealing ; and the result has
been that my worldly prosperity has been
solid te the core.
"But, boys, that is nothing compared
with satisfaction of always feeling that my
gains were fairly earned, and that I had
helped ethers while helping myself. A few
thousand, mere or less, are et no import
ance. But, O my boys, peace cr mind is
all-important."
