TOBACCO.
Tb Outlook for 1880 The New Yerk Mar-
ket Tbe Lecal Trade.
A drive of some forty miles through the
county recently presented nothing se
striking in agricultural operations as the
general cultivation of tobacco, the activity
et tbe growers in cutting anu uousieg it,
and the many improvements which they
are making in facilities for storing it.
Throughout the northeastern part of the
county where some depreciation had been
reported we found the crop very geed.
Tbe growth of the tobacco has net been as
rapid and the quality will net likely be as
fine as last year, but it will average excel
lently, the acreage is quite as large, if net
greater, the weight will exceed that of
1880, and when the profits of the planting
are counted they will be as great. The
crop new being housed has very luckily
escaped hail or any ether general disaster,
and' is new pretty well out of danger.
Mere than hair of it is housed. Few fields
have net as yet been touched with the
knife, many arc entirely cleared, and in
nearly all the foremost crops are pretty
well in. Auethcr week of geed weather
will sec the tobacco mostly en the poles.
It is noticeable hew many tobacco sheds
many with basements have been built
during the past year, and all indications
point te the growing appreciation of the
farmer that it is in the successful curing of
his crop that its profit must be largely en
hanced. The crop et each, succeeding year
is better housed and handled than before.
Tbe New Yerk Market.
The Tobacco Journal for the past week
continues te bear the market, represents it
as demoralized, predicts an immense '80
crop and a lowering of prices from 25 te
30 per cent. Itrrteciercs that '79 tobacco
is a drug and expert at a stand-still. The

tion te sacrifice the truth te its own pride
of opinion and reckless desire te keep down
prices and justify its ever-failing predic
tions, that it is with little confidence that
we quote even its reported sales of last
week:
Connecticut. Crep '79 : 200 cases sec
onds and fillers, 12V and 7V cents. 250
cases Havana seed, running 18 te 23 cents.
Pennsylvania. Crep '78 : 350 cases ;
fillers, 12 cents ; running, 20 cents ; wrap
pers, 10 and 45 cents. Crep '79 : 600 cases
line running, 18 and 20 cents (reported) ;
medium, 12 and 15 cents ; low, S) and 10
cents.
Ohie. Crep '78 : 100 cases, running,
10 cents.
State. Crep '79: 180 cases, 9 and 11
cents.
Havana. Very active. Sales 1000 bales.

Tbe Lecal Market.
Topping, cutting and housing the crop
of 1880 is still the order of the day among
farmers. It is thought that mere than
half the crop, in weight, has been cut oil",
but many hundred acres, planted late, are
still uutepped some of it hardly worth
topping.
Samplers are still active with the crop
of 1879, and their judgment is that it is a
geed one, as a whole. Buyers have picked
up a few hundred cases during the past
week at private rates.
Among its leeal jottings the New Yerk
Tolxtcce Leaf reports the following sales of
1879 in New Yeik last week: C. II.
Spitzncr & Sen sold 100 cases ; M. Ncubcr
gcr sold 200 cases ; M. II. Levin received
1000 cases ; E. Spingam & Ce. sold their
entire stock te Lichtcnstciu Bres. & Ce ;
Fex, Dills & Ce sold all their 1879 Penn
sylvania (about 500 cases) te several par
ties at geed figures ; Henry Mycr, of Cin
cinnati, visited New Yerk and bought a
large quantity of fine 1878 Pennsylvania ;
E. Hescnwald & Bre. sold 200 cases Hou
satonic and several hundred cases of Penn
sylvania and Connecticut leaf.
