In the poem which, te our thinking, is the most spirited of all these sketches of Urewning's, an old comrade of Cuve's tells a story irhich he heard from the lips of the victor of Flawy. Dining once with his old comrade in Londen, the narrator liad asked him which feat out of all his famous doings steed foremost in his own calm estimation, as evincing what Clivc himself called courage. Te such a query Lord Plassy, like most brave men, could or would give no answer, but he would tell his guest, he said, when he felt most fear, and he went en te recount an inci dent whose mere remembrance, he insisted, still froze his bleed. It was in his early days of poverty and drudgery, when he was an humble clerk in the Indian civil service, and when, as a great honor, he was permitted te lese his incagre earnings at a game of cards in company with his social superiors. It befell one night, when he was playing with some regimcntal offi cers, that ene of them, a captain, made a certain movement with his hand, whose significance was at once detected by the civilian. Clive rose and confronted his antagonist with the words : "Such the new uiuuoeuvre, Caplulu? I'm a novice ; knowledge grows. Whitt, you lorce a card, you cheat, sir V Of course such an accusation en the part tif a wretched clerk was bitterly resented by all the military gentlemen and the out raged Captain bade Clive down upon his knees and whine for pardon, or have his life snuffed out. Te which Clive rejoined, simply, " Well, you cheated." "Then outbreke ft howl lreiu nil the Irlcudsitreund. Te his feet sprung each In fury, nsts weie clcuchcd und teeth were ground. ' Kiul it ! no time like the present ! Captain, yours were our disgrace ! Ne delay, begin and finish ! Stand back, leave the pair ft space ! 11 civilians be Instructed ; hencclerth simply lily the pen, - the sword ! T .Suit him with aplbtel men : fly the sword ! This clerk's no swordsman : MEDICAL. K veil odds ! A dozen puces 't lxt the most ami least expert Make u dwarl a giant's eiual; nay. the dwart it he's uleii. Likelier hits the broader target !" They steed up accordingly, but, when the word was given. dive's forefinger in :ulvcrtently pressed the trigger and dis charged his weapon befere he could take aim. Of courseit was new the Captaiu's turn : " Up he marched lnitamiugtrlumph t' was his right, mind up within .lust an arm's length. 'New, my clerkllng,' chuckled Cocky with a grin As the levelled piece quite touched me, new, Mr Counting Heuse. repeat That expression which 1 told you proved bail manners ; did 1 cheat 7" ' Cheat veu did, you knew you cheated, and, this moment, knew us well. As for me, my homely breeding bids you lire aim goieucu : Tw ice the muzzle touched my lerchead. Heavy barrel. Hurried wrist, l-:ilher spoils u btcady lifting. Thrice, then, 'Laugh at hell who list, 1 can't ! Ced's no ruble either. Hid this boy's eye wink once ? Ne ! There's no standing liim and hell and Ged all three against me se, I did cheat!' And down he threw the pistol, out rushed." Such was Clive's account (unfinished, as we shall sec) of a scene whose memory, he assured his friend, still made " goescllcsh rise." His friend rejoins, with a laugh, that everything is relative, and he can sce nothing tearful in the story when cemparcu with ether incidents in Clive's life. In a common case, no doubt, where a bully caught at cheating thrusts a pistol in your race, it would be a trial te the nerves, but the victor of Arcet, Tlassy, aud a score of liclds had come, in his time, te even closer quarters. At. this Clive bounds up in an outburst of wrathful scorn, indignant that his friend should miss the true cause of his terror " "Loek here ! Suppose the man. 'hci-kiiig his advance, his weapon still extend extend net u span , ,, distant from in v temple curse liim quietly had bade liic, 'There, Keep your life, calumniator ! worthless ltle I freely f pare: Mine you tivciy would have taken murdered mound l.iygoed luiue lieth at once and all the belter! Ce, and thank veur own bad aim Which perm ih me te lergivc you!' What it Willi Mi'-h words as thec. lie had cast away his weapon? Hew should 1 have berau'iiic, please? Xay, I'll spare you pains and tell you. This, " and only this, remained !'ick his weapon upand iiselten niysclt. I se r had gained SIe.'i iricearlier, lea ing England probably te pay en still Ueni and lakes ler hair India, tenant at the Frenchman's will." Tite mere these lines are pondered, the mere appalling appears the crisis which lirewiiing has here pictured. It is plain that had the blackleg had the wit te dis cern his advantage, net only would suicide have been Clive's sole resource, but even Miicidc could net have cleared his blasted reputation. It was the thought of the foul blot unmerited, yet iucflacable which might have (rested en his name, which, recalled after the lapse of years, still had power the shake the pulse and head the brew of the conqueror of l'lassy.
