Mew of the Town.
Geerge Dinkle, an employee in the ma

at Bridge and Commerce street, while
working a circular saw in the pattern de?
partment yesterday afternoon, had the
third finger of his. right hand cut off above
the second joint Dr. Tayler dressed the
injured member.
The posteffio hours appear te change with
the closing hours of the stores. Frem Sep
tember 1st until further notice the office
will close at 7:80 p. m., Saturdays excepted
when eight o'clock will be the closing hour.
It is well te remember these things.
The members of the Archery club were
toted in hay wagons yesterday afternoon
te the residence of J. Housten Mifflin, at
Norwood, where, until tee dark te see the
target, they practiced with their bows and
arrows.
The Shawnee fire company will held its
regular monthly meeting this evening.
Frem a solid piece of weed Jerry Kech
has just completed the statue of a man
which will grace the front of his cigar
stere en Locust street. The proportions
given the statue are very geed and the
work reflects much credits en Mr. Eech
who is a born genius.
It is said the "Our Beys" baseball club
of this place anticipated a defeat at the
hands of the "Furnace Hill" nine of
Hiddletewn where the game of yesterday
between the teams was played ; and cer
tain it is that Buch anticipations were rea
lized, the score at the ending of the ninth
inning standing 21 te 17 in favor of the
home club. The " Our Beys " played with
several substitutes. The honors are new
even, a victory and a defeat being scored
te each club. Anether game will proba
bly be played te decide the championship.
Samuel Eddy, a brakemau en freight
engine Ne. 223, had the index finger of his
right hand mashed at Lcaman Placa last
night while coupling cars. The injury
was dressed by Dr. Craig en the arrival of
the train at Columbia.
The committee of ladies te whom has
been entrusted the tunning of the fair te
be given this month, commencing en the
Dtli, for the benefit of the Citizens' band,
will held their last meeting in the band
room this evening, where the final arrange
ments will be made.
The ladies' aid society of the M. E.
church at their sociable, held in the
church parlor last evening, took in about
eighteen dollars clear gain, as they had
no expenses. The evening is said te have
been very plcasautly spent.
Jacob Strawbridge, an old resident of
Washington boreujrh. died last night after
a lingering illness at the age of seventy-six
years. The funeral will take place en
Sunday morning next from the Bethel of
the Church of Ged.
M. Bachcnhcimer has just placed a gas
reflector in the show window of his stere.
The thrcc-ycar-eld daughter of Frank
Zicgler, the P. It. It. engineer, fell down
the cellar steps at her home en Walnut
street, below Third street, yesterday after
noon, and was quite severely injured. Drs.
Armer and Kay did what they could te
relieve the sufferings of the little one, who
te-day experiences but little pain.
The Weman's Foreign Missionary so
ciety or the M. E. church, met in the church
parlors yesterday afternoon.
Miss Mary Bewman, of Marietta, Pa., is
visiting in Columbia, the guest of Mazie
E. Purple.
Mr. Hebcrt E. Haldeman, of Columbus,
Ohie, who has been visiting his family in
Columbia for the past mouth or two, left
here this morning te resume his duties in
the former place.
Sarah Davis, a colored woman who is
separated from her husband, Daniel Davis,
has brought suit before Justice Evans
against Sadie Ycllctts, a quadroon, who is
charged with being tee intimate with the
aforesaid Daniel. Sarah was net able te
substantiate her charge and defendant was
released.
The Garfield and Arthur marching club
at a meeting held last evening decided te
adept an cichty-five cent uniform. Majer
Yocum of the ijy was elected treasurer of
the elub.
An association composed exclusively of
members of the Vigilant ire Company
will give a sociable in the cngine house
parlor en Saturday evening next. Wolfe's
orchestra will furnish the musie.
Let the voters remember that te-day is
the last day en which they can be assessed
and act accordingly. The assessors may
be found at the different polling-places. It
is well te make sure of these things.
The Western Union telegraph olfice at
this place is new what may be Killed a
" department office, " as the telegraph in

another. The instruments being together
and the operator unprotected, that official

Walter KaufVman, of Mcchanicsburg,
Pa., is visitiug C. C. Kauffinan.
The carts, trucks, etc., used by Messrs.
I'pp and Black at Whitcland, in their
contract with the Pennsylvania railroad
company were brought here te-day en a
couple of freight cars.
The river is somewhat higher than it
was a week age but is yet close te low
water mark. The rise is nowhere near
wliat we supposed it would be.
More Scheel Changes.
On ing te the ever-crowding of the Mul
berry street secondary school, the superin
tending committee of the school beard
liave been compelled te transfer about
twenty of the pupils te Mr. Gates's Rock Reck
laud street secondary. About twenty
pupils of Miss Brubakcr's girls secondary
school have been transferred te Miss
Hantch's boys secondary. These trans
fere, of ceurse, create dissatisfaction, but
they cannot for the present be avoided.
A6 seen as the new Lemen street school
house is finished, and the contractors are
under bends te have it finished by the 1st
of December, there will be room for the
secondary pupils, as there will be both a
boys' and girls' school iu the building.
Lett by a Yeung Man.
Susan Brown is the name of a 17 year
old maiden from Uarrisburg, who came te
the lockup last night and asked for lodg
ing. She said that she was brought te
this city by a young man whose name she
did net knew. He was a resident of Read
in!?. Yesterday he met her en the strcet
in Uarrisburg and asked her te accompany I
him te Lancaster, bue agreed te de se
and he paid her fare. He left her in the
depot and it was net long before she found
that he was net coming back. She then
went te the station house. The mayor al
lowed Susan te depart this morning.

The mayor had before him this morning
one drunken and disorderly person, who
was committed te jail for 5 days, and two
vagrants who were discharged.

conduct was this morning sunt te jail by

In their monthly, circular, dated Sep
tember 1, Messrs. J. 8. Gans's Sen & Ce.
make the following observations :
"Seed Leae. Trade has been slew;
nearly all useful, old tobaccos have been
picked up by manufacturers, whilst sales
of new have only been moderate.
The bulk of our packers have but just be
gun te sample, and it is hardly reasonable
te expect large transactions until-all are
through and cooler weather sets in.
"The expert demand noted in our last,
has net continued, owing however te the
fact that with large quantities of Brazil in
Bremen, dealers there are trying te press
the prices of seed leaf, with what success
the future must tell.
"Our reports of the '80 crop, although
all agreeing te its being large, are very
conflicting as te its quality and soundness,
particularly se in Pennsylvania, where it
appears as if the new crop will produce less
fine leaf than did that of 1879."
They report for the menth.the sale of 50
cases of 1877, 2,200 cases of 1878, (500 of
Pennsylvania); 4,300 cases of 1870 (1,600
or Pennsylvania. They quote Pennsylvania
1878 at from 12(13 for low te 18(0,35 for
wrappers; Pennsylvania 1879 at from 10(j
12 for low te 18(50 for wrappers.
A Jurer Arrested.
Samuel Tayler, colored, of Little Britain
township, who has been serving in court
as a juror this week, was arrested after
court this morning and taken before Alder
man A. F. Dennelly te auswer a charge of
deserting his wife. When the partners
came together they scttlcd.the case by Sam
uel paying his wife some money and prom prem
ising te pay her mere.

K. P. Perter, special agent of the census

In Yerk, August 31, at the Moravian
parsonage, by Rev. L. F. Kampmann, Mr.
Chas. Henry Decker, of Landisville, Lan
caster county, Pa., was married te Miss
Anna Stump, of Jeffersen, Coderus town
ship, Yerk county.
Policeman Resigned.
Charles Derwart has resigned his posi
tion as policeman of the Seventh ward.
The mayor has made no appointment as
yet.
Big Game.
Tobias Krcider caught a turtle in Mill
creek this morning, en an out line, which
weighed between nine and ten pounds. He
also caught a five pound eel.
Large Tomate.
- William Pentz, cigar manufactuicr, at
Chestnut and North Queen street, has a
large tomato which he raised. It weighs
two pounds and ene ounce.
Large Funeral.
Jehn Franciscus was buried in Wood
ward Hill cemetery this afternoon. The
funeral was very large, the Kcd Men and
Shiflllcr fire company attending.

of Mr. Themas P. O'Connor, Heme Ruler,
member for Galway " that it is no longer
just or expedient that all measures for the
improvement of the condition of the peo

consisting of legislators, hereditary
and irresponsible," was moved in the
house of commons, in the small hours of
Wednesday morning. After the burial
bill was seconded by Mr. Tabeucher (Lib
cral) member for Northampton. The
Marquis of Hartington humorously depre
cated the raising of a great constitutional
question at half past three o'cleok in the
morning. The house then divided en the
