Fresh Gleanings Frem the Fruitful Harvest

While moving a leg recently, Mile Par
sons, of North ville, Conn., found himself
suddenly covered from bead te feet witn
hornets. Want of space forbids the publi
cation of his remarks.
One of our religious contemporaries re
marks: "The editor of this paper writes
his editorials en his back." We write ours
en paper. It comes handier for us, and is
much mere convenient for the printers.

When Jee Leng's deg was snake-bitten
up in KIk county; Jehn Green and Jehn
Caldwell were present. J. C. remarked
that if he had some whisky he could cure
the deg. whereupon the owner of the deg
procured a pint. After pulling the cork,
J. handed it te J. G.. saying : "Taste.
If it is net pure it will net de te use it en
the deg. Gieeu tasted it and reached the
half ni'it that was left te J. C, who fin
ished it at a Mnglc draft, then handing
the empty bottle te Leng, he said :
"Stranger, I am very sorry te tell you
that your deg will die as sure as hell's
alire.'"
Autumn Werk in the Garden.
The summer will seen be geue, but the
glorious autumn is yet te come, with its
soft, smoky, seething atmosphere, its gild
ed foliage and ripened fruits. Each sea
son has its pleasures, but none crowded se
full and running ever with enjoyment as
the autumn ; every season has its oppor
tunities and duties, and these of the fall
arc numerous and important. What a geed
time, in the pleasant fall weather, for ar
ranging beds of herbaceous plants,
such as hollyhocks, delphiniums,
phonics, &c. Heets can be divided
without injury, and generally with great
benefit te the health of the plants. Lilies,
aud'all hardy bulbs, can also be removed
and replanted as seen as the leaves begin
riien. Plants that arc somewhat tender
in the North, such as tritemas, pampas
gniss, &c., and any ether tender plants
that it would be desirable te save ever the
winter, may be secured in pits or cool cel
lars. A simple pit is made by removing
the earth for say two feet, ever which is
placed a het-bed frame and sash. Even
hoards or mats will answer for a covering.
Give air during fine weather.
General improvements in the garden
should be new made, for our springs are
hheitand unpleasant. Dig up and put in
order every vacant bed, as it will net only
facilitate spring work, but de the soil
geed and have a neater appearance than
if left rough and weedy.
All bulbs and plants that die down te
the ground in autumn, may be protected
by covering the surface of the earth with
leaves, manure or straw, but plants that
retail! their leaves during winter will net
bear this kind of protection. A few ever
green boughs thrown ever the bed, a little
straw between the plants, or some light,
open covering of this kind, is all they will
bear without danger of smothering and
retting.
If you want a lawn, and the ground Ls
clear, it is best te prepare it at once, and
sew Kentucky blue grass with a little
clever, or lawn grass, which is simply blue
grass and while clever, with a few ether
nice grasses, using at the rate of four bush
els of seed te the acre. Sew in September
and the autumn rains will give it a geed
start. Before winter sets in give the young
grass a light dressing of manure, and by
the first of June you will have a geed lawn
if the soil was in fair condition. In pre
paring soil for a lawn see that the surface
is light, for it is hard te make the young
grass come up in a hard soil that will bake
en the surface. After the grass once gets
started there will be no trouble. If the
soil is still' and likely te bake, after sewing
the seed and raking it in, cover the sur
face with about an inch of manure, and let
it remain until the grass is well up, then
rake oil' a little of the coarsest. Vick's
