MONDAY EVENING, AUG. 23, 1860.
CalUraliag the Basket-rVIllew.
German town Telegraph.
Many years age a large amount of wil
lows were raised within from ten te twenty
miles of Philadelphia, for basket-making
purposes, and a considerable amount is yet
raised, but nothing near what was grown
in years gene by. We de net knew why
there has been this falling-off, for the basket-makers
tell us that at the prices they
pay osier growing must be profitable. We
have net te hand any statistics as te the
actual profits te be made en an acre of wil
lows ; or, indeed, of the product, but from
the fact that the willow when grown in
this way docs net much interfere with the
growth of grass about it ; that from one te
two tens of meadow grass te the acre can
be had from a let of willow-land, would
seem te indicate that something geed
ought te be made out of it. The willows
cost very little in the way of expense.
Thcj' have te be cared for te be sure when
young, or grass and weeds, if they de net
actually smother them out, will interfere
very much with their growth. Then this
care has te be kept up for three or four
years, as it is this long before a willow
plant will be strong enough te cut back,
se as te threw out many strong sheets.
But these strong stocks once brought up
there is no mere labor, as the buyer of the
willows, at least about Philadelphia, will
cut and carry away themselves, doing their
own peeling and whatever is necessary te
bring the sheets into a proper condition
for use.
The kinds most generally employed about
Philadelphia are the white, gray and pur
ple willow ; the last being a delicate kind
for fine work. The last kiud, the purple
willow, is net perhaps se well adapted for
growing in grass as a meadow, aud it is
ten delicate te crew very hicli, and it is
best te give it all the ground te itself. In
fact, wherever we have seen this kind
grown in this vicinity, it se occupied all
the ground.
As wc have said, we have no facts or
figures of any account te hand ; but it
seems en a first view that much mere
might be made of it than has been done.
The invention of a process for softening
weed, se as te fit it for basket making, and
yet net all'cct its enduring quality, may
possibly te some extent interfere with the
prelits of the willow, but as te driving it
out of cultivation, the willow is tee easily
raised, and will grew in land mere worth
less tlian any of the oaks, and along streams
and swampy places, where nothing else of
any use would grew, and se rapidly, tee,
as in sonic cases te admit of two cuttings
a year. In fact, whatever may be done in
the way of softening or steaming of oak,
hickory, ash and ether hard weeds for the
purpose of basket making, etc., it has
thus far made but little progress, aud as
surcdlv net enough te drive, at any time
in the future, the willow out of cultivation.
